Perhaps I am wrong. But I have always worked the problem backwards. So 8-5=3, 5×3=15, 2+15=17.
Doing it forward would give you 21.
Asked the wife - mechanical engineering degree. You’re right. She said my logic is right, but my “sequence isn’t. “Whatever is in parenthesis is addressed first”.

I can see how people would get 21 but if you follow PEMDAS it's 17.
Yep. That was the acronym she referenced. Never really liked advanced math, so I married someone who did.
Love this guy's schtick. It's stupid but the responses are great.
