Place to put my Nonsense Thread.

Tying education funding to the political survey results of students. Very dumb. Requiring schools/students to declare their political beliefs is also ethically questionable.

Expressly prohibiting public education curriculum changes that he views as politically influenced and in opposition to his views. Maybe not dumb. Actually savvy. But highly unethical. Pushing out beliefs he doesn’t support while pushing in beliefs he does support in early education.

A bill to prevent social media companies from blocking politicians who spread false or hateful information. Pretty dumb.

This one is less impactful but funny that Florida had to write a bill to catch up to public school curriculums started decades ago in states with fair-to-good public education: His law emphasizing civics instruction and the perils of communism. Welcome to the 21st century, Florida.

Expanding ‘stand your ground’ laws to potentially allow for murder for property crimes. I don’t wholly disagree with stand-your-ground laws, but Florida needed to look into limiting its scope, not expanding it to allow you to blast Jimmy with a shotgun for breaking a window.

Expanding laws to restrict peaceful protests. If you protest peacefully but a handful of protestors turn violent, you’re all guilty by association, as if that’s something you can control. It’s intended purpose is to prevent protests in the first place.
If you are old enough to vote--don't you have to declare R, D or indy? Whats the big deal?

Prohibiting politically influenced curriculum shouldn't have been allowed in the first place, but you probably didnt have a problem with it as it has shifted further and further left, correct? Where was the outcry before?

The stand your ground is tricky---but if you know thats the consequence or possible outcome---isnt it the ultimate deterrent.

Restricting peaceful protests----wrong.
Not acknowledging that protests have rarely been peaceful---wrong
Protest organizers have a responsibility to not allow violence, rioting, and property damage, do they not?

It varies from state to state but most allow you to register to vote without choosing anything. And that also only applies to those who register to vote. The primary issue is tying political survey results to funding. He has used his imagination to come up with a problem of Liberal indoctrination in colleges. So it appears that his solution to that imaginary problem is to threaten funding if 20% of 18 year olds think they’re Republicans but that number drops to 15% as they get older and learn more about life. He’d say, “See, I told you these evil colleges were indoctrinating our youth!! No more money for you!.” Or something intellectually disabled like that.

They allow you to vote in both republican and democratic primaries?

What a time to be alive. The same thing was proposed for North Carolina. Thank god it got shut down. Just end the federal unemployment benefits and it will take care of itself.

If DeSantis wins the GOP nomination in 2024, it will only be a matter of time before the NYT or WaPo tell us how DeSantis is worse than Trump.

Whether you’re allowed to vote in primaries is one question. That’s not the question you asked. You can register to vote without making a choice. I’m not up to date on all 50 states, obviously. Presumably, if you don’t make a choice you’re not allowed to vote in primaries.

Edit: And, again, even if you’re required to make a selection, that is the result of voluntarily choosing to register to vote. That’s different than requiring all students to be surveyed.

In practice, could/will a lot of students just not respond or pick “I don’t know” (or whatever the equivalent answer is)? Yeah, probably. But the issue is DeSantis’ intent.

I don’t think it could get worse than Trump, but I’ll never underestimate the GOP.

And for the record, I think DeSantis is better than Trump, which should go without saying. He’s at least qualified to lead, even if I think his leadership is shit.

Hard to take her seriously. There are more trees on the earth than ever before.

And drowning in rising sea levels? According to NASA, the sea levels have risen 8 inches since 1870. On average, the ocean is 2.3 miles deep, basically 145,000 inches. So, we're talking about sea levels rising an astronomical 0.0055% over the past 150 years. That's roughly the equivalent of my dog farting into a hurricane.

Is there a price for your dog's farts?

What did you do with the trees you did cut down. I'm assuming you don't have a wood stove and make firewood.
The ones I had cut down were chipped up and hauled off. The ones I cut down, I burned in the field behind me.. Pine is terrible to burn in a fireplace or a wood stove. I am done though. All the pines are gone. Nothing but crape myrtles, oaks and Japanese maples left. A couple of sycamore trees on the backside of the property.

Depends how you define “ever before.” We have about half as many trees now compared to when human civilization started (when we started building towns and cities and stopped being hunter gatherers). In the past few decades, as a result of conservation efforts (planting trees), we have been able to counteract deforestation.

Sea level rise is accelerating. True, it’s risen 8-10 inches since 1870. That doesn’t mean it will take another 150 years to rise another 8 inches. Is 8 inches practically nothing compared to the depth of the oceans? Yes, but the depth of the ocean isn’t relevant to the threat of sea level rise. It doesn’t take much for what seems like a small sea level rise to wipe away coastlines. We’ve already seen that start to happen.

Thank goodness you’re an expert in this, too.
