*Official* B1G Off-season Thread

Put me in the camp that MSU is overrated at #10. IMO we are a borderline top 25 team.

I think our offense is going to have a lot of issues this year. Still dont have anyone that can break their guy down off the dribble and attack the rim and our point guard situation is flat out bad. Winston is ok but his size and athleticism makes him a liability vs the top PGs he faces. Langford just is what he is--a very average player.

MSU if they can land a few more studs for 2019 should easily be top 10 or better pre season but Im not sold on MSU being that good this year. Henry is our only frosh ready for playing time right now.

only info about Iowa's scrimage vs Missouri
game was split into 7 segments no score has been put out there. the break down was
4 segments won by Iowa
2 segments won by Missouri
1 tie

Bohannon DNP due to a minor injury
Connor played all 7 segments as the PG

Garza played no minutes given

this had me all excited till the end of the post
Iowa ranked #8 in the preseason poll
Iowa held Creighton to 32% shooting and 48 points in their scrimmage
then the hammer fell
they were talking about the women's team.

as for the men's team Kenpom preseaon rankings
#38 overall
#18 adjusted offensive ranking
#81 adjusted defense ranking
if the defense improves that much from last year this team could very well finish in the top 6 and be NCAA Bound.

Illinois fans, know anything about Quincy Guerrier. Saw he was committing tomorrow and he was down to a final 3 of Oregon, Syracuse, and Illinois.
Syracuse. We were selling early playing time, and he'd rather RS and play with his buddies.

Walker Kessler will be on campus for the Penn State game this weekend. The atmosphere should be pretty sweet. Would be a great fit in Beilein’s offense ala Wagner.

Silly post

Why? Look what Brohm is doing in year 2 after inheriting a dumpster fire. He's going up against the big boys and winning some legit recruiting battles. Painter? Not so much especially in year 14.

Huge Brohm fan, but let's see him sign this class before we get too far ahead on things. Also, I think it's easy to lose the forest for the trees after a few recruiting losses. It's not like Painter is recruiting against IPFW and Wright State.

Mason Gillis - Ohio State, Butler, Xavier
Brandon Newman - Indiana (yeah, I know), Xavier, Ohio State, Maryland
Eric Hunter - Ohio State, Butler, Minnesota
Dowuona - Miami (FL), Clemson, Tennessee, UConn
Trevion Williams - Michigan State, Illinois, Xavier

There have been more than a few high-profile losses by Painter recently, and that's damn frustrating. But it's not like he's bringing in Donnie Hale and Jacob Lawson.

What @CardinalBoiler said. I’m a huge Brohm fan (how can one not be?) but he still has a long way to go to bring Purdue to the national level like the basketball program has consistently been under Painter. Painter isn’t bringing in slouches.

Brohm is on the fringe of having a top 25 class in football and suddenly Purdue fans want to throw Painter under the bus when he’s had multiple top 25 classes (a top 5 even). Both are the same age and some Purdue fans want to view Brohm as a rising young coaching star and have just grown tired of being a really good team under Painter but wanting more.

One has to remember Painter also inherited a program that was in the dumps and didn’t have near the support/resources from Burke that Brohm has from Bobinski.

Purdue Basketball is a top 20ish program in basketball. Painter has never broken through or even had a sniff at getting past a Sweet 16. He has had two knock it out of the park four year player classes (2007 and 2014) and one that was a one player class with a bonafide superstar (2016). From 2008-2013 there is a whole bunch of junk. 2015 okay class but didn't break through and 2017 is still too early to tell.

2018 certainly could out play its ranking but too early to tell. Unless Purdue gets Zeke 2019 is going to look very similar to that 2018 class.

You can hope and pray your coach coaches them up, but without a stellar core see (2007 and 2014) Painter hasn't been the best at that.

I can understand why fans are upset Painter can't snag top 50 recruits.

Painter definitely deserves a lot of the blame for the classes that followed the 2007 class. (2008-2011) I don’t think people realize how far behind Purdue was in terms of resources/facilities, etc. though either. He was going to a gun fight with a tooth brush.

Since the 2012 class I’ve been pleased with his recruiting. Yeah classes didn’t work out like the 2013 class but everyone loved that one on paper, but shit happens and certain players just don’t work out.

I think he’s certainly had talented enough teams to get past the sweet 16 which is what we’re talking about in terms of recruiting. But from bad breaks/injuries/draws just hasn’t yet. He deserves blame for that but also deserves the credit for having a team capable of winning a boat load of games and getting to the sweet 16 in the first place.

My biggest beef is just with the posters acting like Brohm is far and away a better recruiter than Painter though. It’s just not a fact yet.

I don't remember Illinois seriously recruiting Trevion Williams, but I could be wrong.

“Williams checks in as the No. 77 player nationally in the class of 2018. Other offers are from Xavier and DePaul, and Xavier appears to have emerged as an early favorite.

“Xavier has been recruiting me the hardest so far,” Williams said. “They were the first ones to offer me and believe in me, and they continue to check on me.“

The Illini now have offers out to two big men in the class of 2018. They previously offered Webster Groves (MO) product
Carte’Are Gordon”

Looks like they offered him right before MSU and Purdue did so they were in early but I remember everyone thought he was Xavier bound. I’m not sure how hard they recruited him after that though.

Yeah, we threw out a shit ton of offers last season. I don't doubt that we offered, but I don't think we "recruited" once we saw the writing on the walls.

*The following post will feature moral victories, excuses, and "little brother" justifications*

It's easy to frame it that way without considering the fact that two of his best three teams were felled by major injuries in February and March.

If he recruited better he would have had more than 4 opportunities to break through in 14 years.

He has had two national player of the year candidates in three years. That’s pretty decent, right?

Possibly speaks more to his development than his recruiting. He's not bad at recruiting he just seems to have plateaued.

This. Purdue football is decent historically but after the Hazell dumpster fire, their winning percentage overall is mediocre with some pockets of really good football plagued by plenty of bad years. Purdue basketball is much better historically, is in a hotbed of talent, and Painter can’t close the deal on legit players often enough. He either needs to change his philosophy on recruiting which I doubt will happen or he needs to hire an ace recruiter. Steve Lutz was billed as that guy but so far I haven’t seen him land anyone that was a big-time recruit.

Why didn’t that translate to tournament wins?
Kansas was a great team that super athletic and had the POY. They were the better team.

Last year, Haas injury derailed any realistic chance of getting to the Elite 8. Would’ve fell to Nova anyway.
