*Official* B1G Off-season Thread

No one is saying Morgan isn’t a stud. People were just discussing where IU’s perimeter shooting will come from.
And I don't think it's going to be a big surprise. Morgan, Romeo, Fitzner, Smith, Green. I would also expect Hunter to provide some outside shooting and maybe Phinese. He improved his offensive game a lot his senior year. I think we're going to be just fine shooting the 3 this year.

You're 100% not straight. I mean, who names their kid Blaire? Pretty obvious your mother knew right away and named you appropriately.
I have stayed out of this for … ever, but I'd name my son "Blaire" over more than half of the top 50-100 traditional boy names. The only thing worse than a boring ass name, imo, is a butchered/unreadable name.

You won't find my sons' names on any top 100 list.
(And they aren't some rando-spelled pop-quiz names either.)

Heard he can only handle the ball with his strong hand.

What are your expectations for Purdue again this year? I can't remember and am too lazy to look it up. Thoughts on IU?

Just for a refresher on mine.
IU top four/five in the B10 and make the NCAA Tournament
Purdue five/six in the B10 and make the NCAA Tournament
Split the games between IU/PU
Neither team win the B10 Tourney
Neither team making it out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament

That way we can poke fun at whoever is more wrong with their projections. :)

I see Indiana anywhere from 3 - 6
I see Purdue anywhere from 5 - 8
Hard to predict when not looking at the schedules for every b1g team.

I don't know if Purdue gets in, but I feel like Indiana should.

The Frenchie's play will be huge for Purdue; and, I think he's gonna be pretty good.
Hopefully a 14&7 guy who can stretch the floor for his teammates.
Excited to see if his game translates.

I believe Purdue has a slightly tougher conference schedule and IU has a tougher OOC schedule. I would wager both get into the tourney.

Show me sasha and Wheeler's stats from the WUG, the USA team, and the two scrimmages. I would venture a guess that they both shot below 30% from 3.

That’s all I’ve got, WUG and scrimmage. So silly to want to look at this amount of shots and determine whether they’re good shooters or not.
You could be an elite defender, but if the guys around you arent doing what they are supposed to, then you will give up points. That's why you look at the individual drating to the team average.

And no, you’re not understanding how the rating is figured then.

You skipped the first scrimmage where he was 2/7. Or the usa where he couldn't throw it in the ocean.

Either way, we will find out in two weeks.
No those are the combined numbers, Purdue twitter account tweeted it.

Extreme, extreme example that would never happen. But Player B, over time, is the better shooter, as your terrible example says. Player's A 42% was a complete fluke.
Look at Leron Black's career arc:

0% on 2 attempts
0% on 0 attempts
29.7% on 37 attempts
51.2% on 43 attempts.

He shot more 3's last season than his entire career. Not really standard but not unheard of.

Love how you're using maybe 5-6 games to determine whether these guys are good or bad shooters. You're daft mate.

Fun discussion gents, happy hour is calling my name though.
Way ahead of you. I've been stuck at the airport all day today. Flight has been delayed three times now. So I decided to have myself a handful of beers to kill the time.

He and Ryan Cline had the exact same defensive rating last season at 101.8. Think he’s a fine defender but wouldn’t put him at all big ten level. Eastern was at 96.6 for example.

He and cline had the same 3pt% too.

No it measures the individual that the player is guarding.
Defensive Rating estimates how many points the player allowed per 100 possessions he individually faced while on the court.

The core of the Defensive Rating calculation is the concept of the individual Defensive Stop. Stops take into account the instances of a player ending an opposing possession that are tracked in the boxscore (blocks, steals, and defensive rebounds), in addition to an estimate for the number of forced turnovers and forced misses by the player which aren't captured by steals and blocks.

Does it take into account who they guarded? I know McBob was generally put on the opponents best scorer. Of all the things this is one IU fans aren't blowing smoke. I'm pretty sure there's a quote out there from Izzo talking about McBob

Yeah I agree he's a good defender. I think defense is going to be a constant under Archie, and I don't think his teams will have near the floor that Crean's did due to that.

As for McRoberts shooting, one can come to two conclusions:
  1. he's a bad shooter and shot so sparingly b/c of that
  2. Archie wouldn't allow a good shooter to take open looks from 3 despite having a team that lacked shooting and scoring

It's all any of us have to go on.
High school doesn't count?

Sasha and Wheeler are known for being great shooters in high school.

Wheeler was the MVP at Brewster in the High School NC game where he hit like 5 or 6 threes on like 7 attempts.

Not that I'm a big fan of preseason KenPom ratings but don't trust anything else right now more.

Preseason:
Purdue average KenPom opponent (includes chalk assumption in Charleston Classic) - 108 (includes 3 top 25, 3 top 50, 5 top 100)
IU average KenPom opponent - 161 (includes 1 top 25, 3 top 50, 5 top 100)

We certainly don't have anyone the level of Duke in the non-conference and play about the same number of "good" teams but IU plays more creampuffs (4 KenPom sub 250 teams vs 1 for Purdue)

Conference:
Purdue average KenPom opponent - 43
IU average KenPom opponent - 49

15 of 20 Purdue games are against KenPom 41 or better teams vs only 12 IU games and IU gets to play Rutgers and Illinois twice each whereas Purdue only plays each once. You definitely caught a scheduling break comparatively.

Thanks. I would have just guessed IU had the stronger OOC schedule given some of the notable games.

No one is going to describe him as a shooter, I think he knows his role on the team. He is that typical white basketball player description, scrappy, lunch pail type of kid. I think he's a pretty damn good defender, not great as he's limited athletically but his effort and basketball IQ is undeniable. I think he got more confident in his shot as the year went on, and took his shots in the flow of the game, he won't be the guy hunting shots, i get most of this is obvious. He's supposedly looked better and worked on his shot, i think he'll need to if this team is going to make the jump they need to make. He's needed on the court for his defense and his hustle, if he adds a little bit more to his offensive game it would help tremendously.

Yea, gotta be careful with preseason rankings and what not.

MSU's schedule looked like murderer's row last pre-season, but by tournament time they had like one single "Quadrant 1" win. Part of that was teams that were cupcakes, and some that fell way below expectations as the season progressed.

Duke, UConn, UNC (ranked #9 when MSU beat them), Notre Dame (ranked #5 when MSU beat them) in the first 7 games.

Yeah i don't disagree with any of that. Is he slated to start?

I think the biggest question mark for both teams is who steps up to score outside of the obvious guys. I think we'll both get ~35 a game from our top two guys (CE + EB & RL + JM)...who's next? Both teams need guys to step up there.

I'm guessing Smith is the next guy for IU. I'm expecting (hoping) for big things out of him this year.

Starters are Green, Romeo, McBob, Smith, Morgan. Will be games where Al could start in a 3 guard lineup. Top reserves Al, Fitzner, Phinisee, Hunter. Smith will be a guy to step up, Fitzner will bring more outside shooting, Al I'd bet a large sum of money will shoot better than .286 from 3. Thompson and Forrestor will also likely split time in the post. Outside shooting i say a combo of adding Romeo and Fitzner, Morgan improving his shot, Green likely is what he is a mid .300 shooter from 3 but usage will likely go up, Al shooting better and possibly some reserve work from Anderson but not that much.

Has a team ever landed 3 people on first team defense? I doubt it would ever happen but Michigan probably had as good a chance as anyone.

I very much disagree.

Green > Eastern
Romeo < Carsen
McBob = Cline (percentage)
Smith > Eifert
Morgan > Haarms

Fitzner > EB
Durham < Hunter
Hunter = Wheeler

That's just the top 8. Even if you take Cline over Mcbob you still lose the head to head shooting battle by position.

Of all the 6 pages I just read through, this comment wins hands down.

I was obsessed with MW2 in college.

I bought MW3 out of college, and quickly realized that I didn't enjoy video games any more once I was actually busy and had responsibility.

In college, we were obsessed with Grand Theft Auto on PS2 and then later in our house, Mariokart on Nintendo 64. We'd play the "battle" mode (where you have to knock off the other players' 3 balloons) for hours on end. First to 10 wins, wins. Then it was 20, then 30, then 50 wins. Roommate actually lost a gf because of it.

After college, I played MW2 for a while but eventually lost interest in video games.

The good ol' days.

Did you ever play drunken Mario kart?

Dumbest game ever. I was the best of my friends at Mario kart and at chugging a beer. I’d slam my beer at the start and then do the race. If you’re “stopping every time you drink” you’re doing it wrong.
