***Official B1G Off-Season Thread***

Yeah but need more ball handling. Jenkins issue was that he was best when Braden was manning the point.

We needed him to be able to handle his own while Braden got a breather, or to at least be able to comfortably handle ball for stretches alongside Braden. This caused Braden to be gassed in a lot of games and as the season wore on - especially when he had to be a one man press break (though I fault painter on some of that).

We essentially have 1 ball handler on the roster right now.
Always weird adding a veteran at the back-up PG role.

Most guys who will take that role and not be crying about their NIL will be guys from a mid-major.

Figure it’ll be at least somewhat easier because they’ll be joining a team that was a 1-seed. Lot of team success and thus visibility nationally to sell.

Yeah, a SF that can play some 2 on defense.

Shot 26% from 3 on what was mostly wide open looks.

If he gets that back up to ~35%, he can be a good role player.
Yea, I liked him better his freshman year. Just couldn't figure it out this year.

Ideally we'd get a combo that can handle the PG role but play alongside Braden as well. That's gonna attract a better player than just the backup minutes.

There's a reason Painter was after DGL. He kind of fits exactly what we need, outside of the mom situation and the fact that I'd set the over/under for his stay in C-U at April 1, 2024.

Cryer would be a grand slam, but yeah right.

Had every opportunity.

If we had a healthy Goode all year his minutes would’ve been cut drastically.

Hope he does well wherever he goes. Because he’s got the tools, just needs to live in the gym for an off-season.

A starter level combo guard likely won’t come unless you offer them the starting 2.

Would Painter be willing to put Loyer on the bench?

I’d be offering a starting spot to get them committed and on campus…
Yea, but we're gonna need the NIL side of the house to come through too if we want a difference maker.

Speaking of PG, who projects there for Illinois next season?

Rumors that the PG at Toledo, RayJ Dennis, is going to hit the portal and would come to us if he does as he’s from IL.

No idea what the plan is until he hits the portal, I know they are recruiting Ace Baldwin (VCU) but he’s leaning towards following his coach to Penn St.

Painter doesn't guarantee starting spots. He always uses the "You'll be given every opportunity to earn a starting spot." but never guarantees. I think the closest was when he told Biggie he'd give him a shot at the 4 alongside Haas. He did that as a freshman and it hurt the team. He was much better playing the 5 alongside Vince Edwards.

I only brought him up because I had read that he had interest in Purdue out of HS.
He loved Purdue but we took Ivey (no brainer) so he didn't have a spot. If money were a non-issue, I'd say he's coming to Purdue, but money talks and bullshit walks.

I'll take the under on DGL.

Brandon Newman enters the transfer portal. He's the one guy most thought would likely go down that path. He just hasn't lived up to the potential he showed as a freshman.

ND - open arms from Shrewsberry. IMHO

Gard is ruining his sterling reputation with Ben Afflecks.

But without the second Davis, the 3 spots saved for ‘other’ have an opening
Lose a non Affleck. Gain a non Affleck. An even trade.

We need to get rid of dead weight still.
