Other teams tried harder to beat Iowa than Wisconsin. Plain and simple.
Facts and numbers say otherwise when compared to other teams on the bubble.

Probably. Though its a tad tougher to get in, since the NCAA took over. Mid-Major reg. season champs, that do not win their conference tourney, get automatic bids. But, as you said, with Purdue's metrics, a .500+ record probably gets it done.
at .500 Purdue still has a shot at the NIT, but losing 6 out of their last 8 they are not very attractive even to the NIT
