*Official* B1G In-Season Thread

Illinois has 5 wins against the top 45 and is 4-3 against 51-80, for perspective. You've beat almost nobody.

Illinois is very talented. Underwood either needs another year to get his system going or he isnt a good coach. There is no rigjt or wrong answer to that right now, although we will know more thos time next year. The roster certainly is not the problem.

And I've agreed with this, but your words make it sound as if he's several tiers below.
Beilein and Izzo are two of the best in the country. Painter isn't on that level. It's not close. It's not debatable. Most college basketball fans would agree. Jesus. It's not like I'm arguing Archie is the best in the world. FFS.

Didn't you think Illinois would be better than MSU this year? Your take was almost as bad as calling Arizona a Final Four lock last year.

 Illinois has 1 post player. The roster is missing a wing and two bigs. We'll know more next season when he has that.

IF Hummel never got hurt twice, if Barlow doesn't get thrown off the team right before the tournament, IF Haas didn't get hurt last year, I don't think most would think this way. I still don't think you could say he's as good as the other two, but you saying he's not even close doesn't take into account the bad luck Painter has had over the years. Again, why I say it's poor to use NCAA tourney success as a barometer.

Results are the results. There are no asterisks. Izzo and Beilein have dealt with injuries as well.

Ok so Kofi comes in next year. Giorgi is a budding superstar as all of us basketball minds know. He has NBA potential. And you got that raw tall dude who barely played.

Underwood has those 3 posts to play next year. If Ayo comes back, they absolutely should be a top 6 team next year. Do you agree?

A hell of a lot easier to do with a roster full of better recruits.
Anddddd I've proven the rosters are relatively comparable. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not a fact. You're trying to make an excuse that isn't accurate.

Giorgi is a 6'-8" post player with average athleticism that can't shoot, doesn't rebound that well, and is not that great at defense. If Ethan Happ didn't have NBA potential, Giorgi doesn't. If Giorgi turns into a 40%+ 3-pt guy, he may have a shot. He will be a fantastic college player for 4 years though.

Kane probably won't be back. He's just not picking up the mental part of the game. I hope he stays and develops, but I think he might be better served at a mid-major.

Translation: "I don't have a reply because I'm wrong."

Iowa isn't well-coached and they're not athletic. If they had a guy that could teach defense, this team wouldn't be struggling like they are now.

I mean the annual late season collapse for Iowa has to be alarming. It's like 4 of the past 6 years or something like that. Just limping to the finish line.

I wouldn't say you've proven that. Or did I miss the data?

I think it's closer than some suggest. But I still think the talent levels at MSU (for sure) and Michigan (to a lesser extent) have been higher.

How many years does Underwood get in your opinion? If he misses the tournament next year, how hot is his seat?

If he misses the tournament next year, it's probably hot. I don't see him missing it unless Ayo goes pro, but even then I think we're on the bubble.

So what happened last year with Beilein? Matthews was a four star recruit. Wagner wasn't ranked to my knowledge. Rahkman was a three star. Duncan Robinson wasn't a four or five star recruit. Xavier Simpson was a four star guy. So, now it looks like the starters for UM last year had LESS four star recruits than Purdue did. He made the National Championship game. How is that possible? Beilein won 33 games last year without any five stars and fewer four star starters than Painter. WEIRD.

LOL, no you haven't. You haven't proven anything. Saying some guys left early doesn't PROVE anything.

Wagner was a 4* composite guy (47th best player according to 247 sports).

under Fran Iowa's best defensive effort was #33 so your comment about can't teach defense is so far off its RollLaughRollLaughRollLaugh also if he couldn't coach defense this season would not have seen a improvement from #247 to #122,

this team returns 5 starters and 3 of the top 4 reserves. off a team that is going to the NCAAT,
8 4* players by ESPN and 4 by Rivals.
4 of those 4* players will be true FR and 1 RSSO and 1 True SO,
3 4* Players will be a RSSR and 2 true SR's and the other starter will be 4* JR Garza.
a very nice distribution of players by class.

You arent considered a basketball mind so I can see why you think that but us basketball minds have him on the radar for nba potential because of his athleticism and strength pairing.

To ask you the same question again though, dont we feel Illinois is one of the better rosters next season? Underwood has to prove it next year.

Oh, so now you speak for "most fans". That's cool.

Look, I think MOST fans would give Painter more credit than you are. You act like I'm trying to claim Painter is better than Beilein. I'm not. I just don't think they are quite as far apart as you do and I believe results on the floor display that. Painter has had bad luck in the NCAA tourney. Major injuries to all of his best teams. That's one reason I look at head to head results. Yes, Beilein has had a lot of good guys leave early and he deserves credit for that. When's the last time he took a team full of 3* guys and won 30 games? Painter deserves more credit than you give him. That's really been my point all along. I don't think he's better than the other two coaches. Hell I don't think he's as good at this moment. But I absolutely don't think he's as far off from them as you claim.

@hailtoyourvictor

Last year Michigan won 34 games with a Big Ten title and made the national championship game. If we are just talking about rankings....

Abdur-Rahkman was an unranked 3 star.

Duncan Robinson doesn’t even have a Rivals page.

Isaiah Livers was a 3* (137th).

Jon Teske was outside the top 100 (108th)

Jaaron Simmons was an unranked 3*.

We only had 3 rotation players in the top 100 and they were Simpson (65), Matthews (48), and Wagner (unranked because he’s foreign but a 4*).

Sorry I used Gil’s template to format this.

He's #122. That's awful. He hasn't been top 100 in over 3 years. Bad. He's not even in the top 3rd of all of D1 schools.

I never said he couldn't get an MBA.

Who are you a fan of again?

Didn't you forget Poole, who was 93 on 247's composite?

@hailtoyourvictor

The 2011/12 Michigan team that won a share of the conference started five 3*s once we gave up on Evan Smotrycz.

Burke Douglass Hardaway Novak Morgan

I said starters. But regardless, he’s acting like there was some huge disparity in talent. Think it’s a lot closer than he thinks.

@hailtoyourvictor can probably help. How many four stars were on last year’s team? Five/six? Purdue had four.
