There a few obvious schools that aren’t in the top conferences that have produced a lot of coaches, including Butler, Xavier, etc. It just so happens that this year, there aren’t any natural guys to go after from those schools. I mean Mich doesn’t want guys like Jordan, Steele, or Wojo.

Michigan doesn’t want them?

Quit trolling

Amazing that rival fans have higher standards than Michigan fans, but timing is made as an excuse
I like Juwan, and I think he is likely to be moderately successful at least.

UM better hope he doesn't go the route of Chris Mullin, Danny Manning, Patrick Ewing, Avery Johnson, Mark Price, Donyell Marshall, Damon Stoudamire, Reggie Theus, Terry Porter, Sidney Low, Kevin Ollie, Mike Dunleavy Sr, Steve Alford, or Juan Dixon.

It’s likely a bad hire. It comes with the nostalgia of the Fab 5 and the UM fans will be excited about that... in the short term. Long term? Long term he’ll need wins and that cupboard looks pretty empty. I think it’s going to be a rough couple of seasons at minimum. The next UM coach will need a good 4 or 5 years. I don’t know how much patience the UM fans will have for Howard assuming he is officially announced as the next coach.

It will be fun sitting back and seeing how it develops. I just hope when Izzo retires that our choices aren’t Montgomery and Magic.

Juwan Howard and Jaden McDaniels are cousins. Maybe it's still Kentucky or Washington, but Michigan certainly has skin in the game now.

Hopefully he's a 3rd cousin or distant enough that they could marry in West Virginia or Mississippi. Fran never lost a relative.

I wouldn't say the cupboard is "bare". They have a couple good guys to build around, and if he recruits well, it doesn't take long to stack a couple of classes. I doubt that they return to Beilein levels for a handful of years if Juwan is successful though.

Just hoping to make the tourney this season and full steam ahead for the 2020 recruiting class.

We are likely to start recruiting a lot of one and done types so if juwan is going be success it won't take long. You can rebuild college bball rosters crazy fast.

Problem is 2, 3, 4 years from now. Unless they keep their current recruits it will be tough. Lose Simpson and Teske. Livers is a junior next year. Those 3 are the only decent players currently on their roster.

Unless Howard can land some instant impact guys next few years guys who arent ready are going to be logging serious minutes.

When it comes to recruiting? Abso****inglutely it does

Penny hasn't show he can coach by the way. Making the NIT in AAC means nothing.
the AAC BB is not a midmajor type coference these are the top teams
UConn a former BE member and they have won the NCAAT before
Houston a former member of the SWC
SMU a former member of the SWC
Cincinati a regular in the NCAAT
Memphis was a power till Cal got done with them

in BB there are no Mid-Major conferences, klize get you head out of your ass,

with Howard having coaching experience in the NBA. the transition to the College should not be that hard.

You can also get killed with instability if you don't get guys to build around. Cuonzo Martin is a great example of this: has landed some absolute studs, but his rosters are always incomplete and never have those good 4 year types to round it out.

It seems to me that Michigan rolled the dice with this hire more so than your usual hire.

Most of the fans are fine with the dice roll instead of settling for someone like Porter Moser or Ed Cooley.

Howard's assistants will have a bigger impact than he does, but he does have the coaching in the NBA to draw recruits in. plus the state of Michigan is loaded with talent,

You have said some really dumb things over the years but the bold is just...wow

AAC is trash and a mid-major.

Yes, they are all underwhelming

But an ass

Guess it’s safe to say you were probably ticked they hired a guy like Beilein with his average to below average resume when they could have rolled the Dice with Terry Mills.

I will say you’re at least being consistent. You said Holtmann was a horrible hire and you now prefer Howard to a Holtmann type like Cooley or Moser.

Be interesting to see how this turns out for both.

I would have taken Holtmann all day over Howard. Cooley and and moser aren't close to as good of a candidate as Holtmann was.

you keep showing how big a ass you really are. do you remember the Akeem the Dream or Clyde Drexler. or how about HC Larry Brown? 2 played for Houston and Brown is coaching SMU.

UConn was part of the BE till it split into strictly BB and those that had both FB and BB, Cincinnati is a regular in the NCAAT. just like Witchita State, Butler. your to contemptable to realize that, Gonzaga is not a Mid Major but are in what you try to call mid majors.

this is not FB,

Howard just might surprise a lot of people. being a assistant coach in the NBA does not = inexperience. most HS players goals is playing in the NBA. so why not play for a ex assistant NBA Coach has he would have the knowledge of what NBA teams are looking for.

Stackhouse was just hired as a assistant coach for Vanderbilt with no prior coaching experience. that Hire is already paying off on the recruiting trail for a team that just went 0-18 in the SEC.

the draw of a Former NBA Coach does wonders on HS Players.

who Howard hires as assistant coaches will also play a big part in his success,
his 1st season will be bumpy. the 2nd will improve then it will be really interesting in his 3rd year and beyond.

Hoiberg didn't have any prior coaching experience and look what he did for ISU. every coach as to start somewhere.

Juwan Howard should try to get Dwyane Wade as an assistant. Unlike other notable coaches that played in the league (ie Ewing & Penny), teenagers actually watched Wade play... and the clout that comes with 3 NBA Titles doesn't hurt either.

Wasn’t a college basketball fan the last time Michigan hired a coach. Started watching basketball when I was in college.

Howard has been an assistant for 5 seasons, 3 of which the Heat didn't even make the playoffs. He was known as a big man specialist, and defensive coordinator. Very few kids he will recruit will remember him in the NBA, and no current recruits were even alive when the Fab Five were relevant.

How has the hire paid off thus far? Vanderbilt has one single Top-200 player for the 2019 class (of their 4 commits), when they had 2 5-stars in the 2018 class alone (and another Top-100 commit)?

His biggest recruiting pay off so far might be him hiring Memphis Whitehaven HS head coach, who already has a relationship with 2020 SG (4-star, ranked #85).

Do you just make shit up on the fly?

Wouldn’t you want a couple assistants that have recruited before or like developed players? I mean I’d love to see Howard and Wade coach at UM. Hell, bring in Chris Bosch too.

He should retain Yaklich and Haynes if possible IMO.
