This is gonna be a really lame answer, but he’s more of a combo. His first couple years I’d say shooting guard because he played along side Siva who was a true point, but he transformed into a nice point guard the last couple years in the program. Def shoot first point guard lol.

Both. Russ was a SG on the offensive end and then would defend the main ball handler on the other end. Chris Jones was the PG setting up the offense.

I saw the thread title, and was certain this was going to be about the Bourbon line he is rolling out right now.

Peyton Siva, not Chris Jones.

Pretty sure he played Sg three seasons while Siva was the pg. Then after Siva left Pitino tried to turn him into a point guard his senior year. I wanna say we had Chris Jones running the point his senior year some as well.

He played decent as a pg his senior year but he’s always been a sg trapped in a pgs (not even that big) body.

If you consider him a pg then he most def was a shoot first pg.

That was very puzzling.

Doesn’t have the height or bulk. Similar to Tyler ullis in size though their games are much different. I’m assuming ullis is no longer in the nba but have no clue?

They would just get switched off onto bigger guys on d and get abused. I bet the number of 6 ft and under guys in the nba is single digits. And the ones that are are usually really thick like jalen Brunson and Fred Van fleet.

Luckily I’m too lazy to look up the gifs of Russ hammering on Randle in Rupp and again in the ncaaT. We lost both games though so not as effective lol. Uk beat us in rupp, the zebras and our abysmal ft shooting beat us in Indy smdh, Harrison also made a huge shot I’ll give him credit, although his biggest play of the game was the flop that sent trez to the bench with foul trouble.

Yea Pitino tried Russ at pg both as a freshmen and a senior. He did next to nothing as a freshmen and most thought he would transfer but he did have a couple decent games at PG when jones was out or he was playing backup pg and his decision making improved some but he was still way too reckless to have the ball in his hands all the time like a typical pg.

But again he had Siva at PG his first 3 years and Jones his last so if u have to pick one it’s gotta be SG imo.

Pitino ran a two point system for a bit. Two guys could take the ball up the court and run a set, whether it be Siva/Russ or Russ/Jones or Jones/Rozier.

Not lame at all....Its what I felt he was, and best describes him.

I’d say the only reason anyone ever associates Russ with being a pg is his height.

I mean he had good handles and was a decent passer but he was careless with the ball at times and often took ridiculous shots (that also happen to go in some lol)

I guess I just don’t see it because he played with 2 point guards while here. At no time, was he THE pg for Louisville. He played it some yes but probable 5:1 more time at sg.

If you have to pick one it has to be sg imo, although he did play both positions some, again sg was his primary position and the one he was most comfortable in.

Also imo almost every pg could be considered a combo guard unless they just flat out can’t shoot.
