Cheapest shot...ever?

yea that was bad, real bad. Cops could've easily been called and an arrest made. Worst part is the kid looks at the ref first to make sure he isn't looking before delivering the punch.

Suspend him for at least a month if not more and the victim can go ahead and press charges if he really wants to.

throwing a punch when you're in a bit of a scrap is a little different than this IMO. This is the worst cheap shot I've ever seen, not sure why you disagree.
I don't.

edit: never mind, i read the rest of the thread... haven't seen you say anything about race but I hope that's not what has you defending this move.
Stick to the topic, please.

First, punches in basketball games rarely land.

Second, they are often thrown at someone who is basically expecting it; there is usually confrontation.

Third, there is often some sort of immediate "cause" for a punch... someone shoves a guy, guy throws a punch back.

This, I thought, went WELL beyond that. It landed as hard as possible, it went beyond just a fist, the kid shooting didn't appear to have any reason to expect it, and there was no clear "cause."
I agree on all accounts.

Update: The school suspended the cheap-shotter and barred him from campus indefinitely.
Surprisingly appropriate.

Wait, Dat, sorry, you are leaving me a bit confused; you seemed to be arguing that it WASN'T a cheap shot, and that the kid with his hand up wasn't defenseless...?

One Duke reference might be funny, but two?

Incorrect. It is the third one that matters. I feel this has been established already.

All signs point to him being a huge coward that was losing his personal matchup and he decided to cheap shot him in a way you rarely see on a court. Guys like this usually get whats coming to them. I don't see him being able to remain at the school.

According to Nichols spokesman Pete Divito, Tenaglia had guarded Platt throughout the game, frustrating him with his defense. Following the incident, Tenaglia finished the game after tests for a concussion were negative.

Divito said school officials were glad Tenaglia was OK and relieved "most of the team didn't see it" due to concerns about a potential altercation.

"The best we can gather was that it was frustration," Divito said about Platt's elbow. "There was no real set up to this. ... We're happy it didn't escalate into a brawl."

Platt's name has been removed from the Fitchburg State basketball program's website. He'd recently been given a player of the week award by the school's league, MASCAC. But the league has vacated that accolade.

"The MASCAC and Fitchburg State University take this incident very seriously," MASCAC commissioner Angela Baumann said in a statement. We are appalled by the actions of the student-athlete. ... His behavior goes against the MASCAC's mission, which includes good sportsmanship. On behalf of the MASCAC and Fitchburg State, we apologize to the Nichols College student-athlete, the team and institution."

Defenseless? Yeah, because he held his follow-through pose, shooting hand up in the air.
No, because the kid didn't know it was coming. He was defensless because he was playing in a legit basketball game and had no idea another kid was going to be playing prison rules ball.
How on earth can you possibly defend the actions of the kid that threw the elbow?

You know if the roles were reversed, Dat would be calling for the white kid to be charged with a hate crime
I was hoping that wasn't the case, but it's starting to look like Datt is one of those guys who's more racist than the people he's accusing of being racist.
You all know him better than I do, but it certainly looks like he fits that description. That sucks.

Punching someone could earn someone as little as an ejection plus the next game. Why would this be different?
RollLaugh good gosh get off this board with this nonsense. He flat out knocked the dude to the ground that was completely unnecessary and with intent. Should be charged with assault and kicked off the team

He used to be a lot easier to talk to and debate with. I'm not sure if he's actually racist, but he does have some pretty extreme views.

Seriously. Just my opinion, last offseason when we had the political threads going, he was respectful and could keep a conversation going without being a dick. This past offseason, he only responded to posts he know he could talk down to people on.
Ah. Well last offseason he was fake dattier. This offseason, he was just dattier. Even this past offseason, he was more bearable than usual.

There's a pretty huge difference between a 1-2 game suspension and being kicked off the team. I asked an honest question trying to gauge where the line is. What you said made sense.

He definitely comes off as extremely racist, though it could just be a long troll job.

I just watched the replay and it’s def more than getting kicked off the team. That’s 100% cheapshot assault. Dude will get arrested and be looking at a stiff penalty.

Dayum, didn’t know the story or that hit. Thanks for sharing

Yeah, this was November 2001 in New York City.

What made it worse was that it happened at the end of a Post-9/11 benefit to help with all the mess from the Terrorist Attacks. In the audience with comp tickets were rescue workers, cops, and firefighters. The NYSA Commissioner was also in attendance and you'll hear Teddy Atlas refer to him after the punch.

Butler picked a bad time to show his ass.

That punch basically ended his career and life as a free man. Talk about not thinking at all.

One of the most awkward things I have ever watched was when ESPN2 still had that Cold Pizza thing on and they arranged for both of them to be there so Butler could formally apologize. Both kept their distance and didn't want to look at each other and gave off the vibe they'd rather be anywhere else at that moment.

After that, Butler killed Sam Kellerman and now he's reading Harry Potter books or whatever one does in prison.

Jesus, just from that still I’m not sure I want to watch that. Wtf happened there?

Friday Night Fights on ESPN, November 2001. The last fight of the night was James Butler Vs. Richard Grant. Butler was trying to keep his Top 10 contender status in the Supper Middleweight division, but had what he considered unfinished business against Grant, who had beaten him in an earlier fight.

This fight went the distance and once again Grant was the victor. Pissed at himself for coming up short again against Grant and his chances of ever being a top contender falling away, he straight up sucker punched him while Grant was reaching out for a moment of post-bout sportsmanship.

He punched Grant hard bare fisted and was escorted out by security and police. Teddy Atlas on color commentary lost his shit.

Dude, shit, that guys is bleeding all over the place. That was from the punch?
