A lot of state fans I knew had kids who chose Duke at a younger age once state became less relevant. Their fandom definitely blew up in the late 80s and early 90s and states shrunk.
If that's true, we're talking about 35+ years ago. And I am not mad at you. Just saying you're doing too much. I know exactly zero Duke fans who used to be state fans. Not that they don't exist, just that it isn't the epidemic that you claim it is.
I can see this being what happened before I can see it being that state fans just became Duke fans. I have family in Hillsborough who have been state fans their whole lives. My immediate family are unc fans. I started being a Duke fan in the late 80's after escaping the indoctrination of the unc cult. I grew up in the minority, even when I lived in Durham.
