The difference is that Beard is going from one Big 12 school to another.
Beard knows the league and isn't taking a huge step up in competition.

The risk factor with him is very small.

The risk factor for Tech is huge. Chris Beard just has to find another Mark Adams...

Coaches fail like Porter Moser who take a huge step up and leave their coaching staff behind. The chance of coaches who change schools in the same conference failing is very small.

He is facing pretty much the same coaches and teams that he has the last 5 years...Not a huge change for Chris Beard.

He’s irresponsible and doesn't have a very impressive list of recruits. The top guy that he brought in was Cliff Alexander, who averaged 7 points at KU and played 8 games in the NBA before disappearing into obscurity.

He also gets credit for much of this year's roster, which was the weakest in the Self era.

Obviously it's not a coincidence that we only started hearing about this guy after Beard took the Texas job, but that doesn't mean he wasn't important to what they were doing. If he's actually the highest-paid assistant in the country, that says a lot. This is Texas Tech; not Duke.

I don't think it's pure coincidence that Kentucky fell off the map immediately after losing Payne.

So, Adams has hired Barret Peery, the Portland State head coach, as the Associate HC. Peery ran a pretty aggressive full-court press at PSU, IIRC. Could be interesting if they try to implement that into the system.

Only a small handful of hires are going to get universal approval ratings these days. The old guard of coaches are weeding out gradually. Some in their prime went to the NBA and they ain't returning any time soon. The pool of options is limited/dwindling.

We see programs reaching to assistants with limited exp, or former players with limited exp, or combo of both.

Tech is trying to get him back. The reason for not releasing him from his LOI.

Pretty sure Tech will be forced to release him unless he takes his name out of the transfer portal and sticks with his LOI.
