Woj bomb.

I really like this trade for Toronto. Get off of DeRozen's $27.7m for the next three years for a great one year run and either a jump start on the rebuild or chance to get Kawhi long term. Spurs will lead the league in long 2s next year with just Aldridge and DeRozen.

If Kawhi can return to his old self, Toronto could be the team to beat in the East... but I don't know. I have doubts about KL. But hey, the Spurs have Chip Engelland, arguably the best shooting coach in the league. Maybe he can turn DeRozan into a somewhat respectable outside shooter.

I kind of like the move for both. Leonard wanted out and the Spurs got the best possible player/deal they could have gotten for him.

Not sure I would have pulled the trigger on that if I’m the Raptors. Kawhi will more than likely be a one year rental, and you’ve already given away your best player in DeRozan. We shall see. If he stays, I like the trade for both teams.

^ I'd say DD is maaaaaaaybe their best player (no, it's Lowry), he's overpaid at $27.7 for the next 3 years, and he's hard to build around. Plus he sucks in the playoffs so hard it's not just small sample size theater. I don't think they could have gotten any package for DD that could beat Kawhi for even just one year. No one's giving up picks and young players for a slightly overpaid volume scorer.

no brainer for the Raptors.

Can contend in the East this year, then start the rebuild assuming Kawhi leaves. Clearly, they were not going anywhere with Derozan as the top guy.

will the posters who said "Pop would never allow that to happen and would work it out and keep him" when the Cavs traded Kyrie remind us who they were?

I am not sure if Toronto doesn't move Leonard now.
Guessing there are some restrictions as far as when they could do this, but doesn't seem out of the question.

But I think they'll keep him and try and make a Finals run.

Dumb trade IMO. Raptors should have kept DeRozan.

I absolutely love this trade for the Raptors. We've already seen the ceiling for this team with a Lowry and DeRozan led team: 2nd round exit or ECF exit.

If they're getting peak Leonard, they're right there with Boston and Utah as the best defensive team in the NBA. They can make a realistic run at the Finals and if things don't work out, then they can start a rebuild immediately and trade Lowry in the 2019 offseason for some future assets/picks as Kawhi goes to L.A.

It's not all about winning championships for every team; that's honestly an unrealistic outcome for all but 2-3 NBA teams. Making the NBA Finals is a huge deal for a franchise like the Raptors who have never been there before since being formed in 1996.

Additionally, they didn't give up OG Anunoby or Paskal Siacam, both of whom I'd rank higher than Jacob Poetl as far as their young talent goes.

Leonard supposedly isn't happy about this trade. So if he reacts like he did this past season..... I would be looking to move him. Will see if Leonard is going to be a pro about this.

He wants to get a max contract with the Lakers so if he chooses to stink it up and purposefully play like trash, he's only hurting himself.

The Lakers would just want to keep Brandon Ingram then if Kawhi shows that he's not the same guy he once was.

I am worried he says he is hurt again and just sits out. Not play like trash.

BTW when does NBA season start? I have a friend who works and lives in Toronto right now. 10 min walk to Air Canada center so would love to go see Kawhi with the Raptors start of the season.

what are his options though? sit out and lose $20 mil+? Would also think if he sat out Toronto could file a grievance and the season might not count so he would not become a FA.

Probably around 20th of Sept.

Definitely get what you’re saying man. Not sure if that puts them on par with Boston or not when the C’s are fully healthy, but they should be good next season no doubt.

If you’re asking if I want Kawhi for one year or DeRozan for a longer period of time, I’ll take DD in that scenario. I don’t think it’s all him as the reason the Raptors have the ceiling they do. I’m not high on Lowry at all, and they have suspect role players as well.

Might be right, but clearly they aren't going much further with DD and the way it had been so might as well try something different.

So if you are Toronto, it's smart to stand pat, have virtually no shot of getting out of the East and overpaying DD for 2-3 more seasons?
LeBron killed Toronto, he was their kryptonite in the east. All Toronto would have to worry about is Boston now. Which is still a hefty worry. Demar didn’t perform in the playoffs, yes, a lot of that had to do with Bron Bron.

So if KL is still hurting from the contusion, and isn’t happy with the trade, as some have stated, don’t you think that’s detrimental to the fluidity of the Raptors roster? DeRozan and Lowry were pretty close.

Suspect role players!?!? Toronto probably has the best bench in the NBA. Adding Danny Green in this trade makes Toronto a great defensive squad. They're 11 deep and will go...

PG: Kyle Lowry
SG: Danny Green
F: Kawhi Leonard
F: OG Anunoby
F: Jonas Valanciunas

PG: Fred Van Vleet
SG: CJ Miles
G/F: Norm Powell
G: Delon Wright
F: Pascal Siakam
F: Serge Ibaka

The pick is top 20 protected as well so if the Raptors want tank mid season they trade Kawhi for pieces keep their lottery pick, get their lottery pick instead and have 27.5 million in cap space off the books by getting rid of Demar's contract...

Didn’t have Green or Leonard last season. Fred Van Fleet is decent, Serge is good and so is Miles. I don’t know who the other bench players you listed are. I’m just not putting the whole blame on DeRozan for them falling to LeBron in the playoffs every year. Lowry has been beyond pitiful in the playoffs.

Pretty much this, a lot of blame gets placed on Demar, but Lowry was just as atrocious come playoff time.

I think it comes down to them playing LBJ every year more than anything. Lowry has been more pitiful in the playoffs than DD. But agree, might be best to change things up at this point, as long as they can hold on to KL.

Toronto's bench wrecked teams last year on the way to the top seed in the East. In a league where there is a number crunch due to the max deals, Toronto has an excellent second group. Poetl was essentially their 3rd center....

Kawhi Leonard + Danny Green >>>>> Demar Derozan, particularly when you consider that it pushes one of OG Anunoby or Serge Ibaka to the bench, adding a starting caliber player to an already high quality 2nd unit.

Toronto's starters got better and so did their bench, even if it's just for one year. Great trade by Massai that opens up cap space if / when Leonard walks. Anunoby and Siakam are Toronto's two key young pieces. Not having to trade either was huge.

Although, if they wanted to package one, along with a Serge Ibaka for Jimmy Butler, I eouldn't complain...

I’m kind of over giving Toronto props for their regular season success. It’s pretty normal at this point for them to be competing for the top seed. What’s also normal is them shitting themselves in the post season, starters or bench.

I think having Leonard this season as well as LBJ going out west bodes extremely well for their chances this season. Boston will be the team to beat in the East, but I give Toronto a shot. Like I said, this trade could turn out to be beneficial to both teams. I just hate the idea of losing your best player for a one year rental, which could very well happen.

I’ll admit, I didn’t really watch the spurs play much last season,
But is Danny Green still a 3 point threat?

He was under 40% last year, but generally he can still drill them. Still plays great defense though, something Toronto hasn't had at the 2 spot in forever. He and CJ Miles should be pretty interchangeable in that spot and Toronto should get good long range production from both.

Us Toronto fans are over it as well, which is why a change needed to be made. Really it had been Demar and Kyle letting us down in the playoffs, so removing one of them and adding a could be superstar could change things.

Demar was going to be in Toronto for 2 years and the rebuild would begin. Instead you get Kawhi for one year and the rebuild begins... What difference does a year make when you gave up a 3rd team center and a late pick for a chance to go toe to toe with Boston to get out of the East.

Lebron has been the Toronto killer. He's gone. This ia your window to go for it.

Agree. Have nothing against the Raptors, hope to see a great series between you guys and the Celtics come playoff time.
