Should KU hang a AP #1 banner from 19-20?

There has been talk and def a lot of people that want it hanging. USC did it in 2003 and they did not play in the BCS national title. A blue blood in their sport.

We were the best team in the country by every metric - and prob our best team since the 2008 national title team. I think we should but due to the “blue blood-ness” I know it’s prob not a good look.

Let’s discuss.

So does that mean anyone can’t claim titles before the ncaa tourney? What about those that won the nit when that tourney was more prestigious? I’m not saying ku should hoist a banner, but when the ncaa cancelled the season they were the unanimous number one in both polls and since there was no tourney to decide who got to claim they were the best than the best way would be to go to the polls.

I don't think you guys would be thinking about this if you had more titles.
I am not sure that is it. Remember KU hangs helm banners. There should be some way to recognize who was the best team in basketball that year. If there isn’t a tourney to decide there should be some other metric.

In order to be a champion you have to play and earn it, settle it on the field/court. KU has been favorite to win the title before and like the rest of us you come up short more than you win. Personally I wouldn't a claim a title that way.

So by your definition we should do away with every football national champion before 1998? Or really only count the last 6 as that was the beginning of the football playoff? Again I don’t think that a banner should be hung, but you can’t just pretend the 2019-2020 season didn’t happen. Over 4200 kids played games that year (353 division one teams times 12 per team). Someone should be ‘crowned’ the best that year.

No one is pretending it didn't happen....What DIDN'T happen though, was the NCAAT. No sense in pretending it did.....

FSU hung a 2020 NCAAT Banner that said “tourney canceled” in parentheses. Then at the bottom it says something like “Top 4 Final Ranking.”

It’s not meant to look like a title banner or anything. Just hangs next to the other NCAAT banners.

I don’t mind celebrating accomplishments of kids who worked hard. Also nice history to point out to a 9 year old in 6 or 7 years. Tell them about the season.

To troll people yes. I think we would have won it.

but no we shouldn’t :(

COVID wiped out all spring sports this year so no national champions were crowned. I never thought I see any fan of a blue blood program go to this extreme.

I feel more confident than most KU teams that the 2020 team could have won it all with that defense, Dok, and shooters coming on strong. That said in no way should KU put up a banner claiming a NC. I’ve always said a banner recognizing the team away from the NC banners saying “consensus 2020 Final #1” I’d be fine with in recognition of the team but nothing claiming a national title.

I’m pretty sure every team ranked 1st going into the tourney thinks they are going to win it and few actually do

True story. But we had the best defense in the country and the most dominant player. No guarantees though.

Kansas already has fake banners in the rafters. What's one more?

The same Dayton that KU beat when KU was a shell of itself? Ok guy

yep, the same Dayton team that lost to you by 1 point in OT in November and then lost one other game in OT before going undefeated in 2020. Dayton definitely would've beaten KU, not sure how this is even a question.

Guessing this is a troll job?

Dayton beating a bunch of scrubs is supposed to indicate that they improved more than KU?

The thread title says AP #1, right? Why do people keep talking about a national championship banner?

I'm not sure anyone actually wants to claim a nat'l title. I'm not necessarily in favor of an AP #1 banner either. But if they wanted to recognize the work of a group of teenagers in some way, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

"Nooo, don't recognize these college kids in any way. A blueblood would ne'er do such a thing!"

Good God.

You can just admit it would be below Kansas and embarrassing. No one will judge you I promise.

Regardless they do (or did) get to raise a banner for another Big 12 regular season championship, so there is some permanent recognition for what they did on the court. Raising a banner for the opinion of sports writers just seems silly, and yes I’ll say it, seems below what a storied program like KU would do. I believe that would be looked down on more than the Helms banners. To each his own though.

On a personal note, I did think they were the best team last year. Unlucky to have a great shot at the title and there not be a tournament.

Frankly, it's embarrassing to make a big deal of it either way.

This is an unprecedented situation but everyone pretends like a precedent has been set.

If it's below a program to recognize the top team in the country in a shortened year, then maybe we should go a step further and stop recognizing teams that finished fourth in the tourney?

I don’t want it if I’m a Kansas fan. It’s just unnecessary. You guys have plenty of other banners you can put up. I’ve always thought for the blue bloods, final fours and beyond were worth bragging about. Finishing number one in the last poll isn’t something I would feel is worth bragging over. It sucks for you guys y’all never had the chance to dance, I do think most people would have picked you guys. But as tons of other teams have shown us in the past, best team doesn’t always win.

The funny thing is, 90% of your fanbase actually would have lobbied for a championship banner if this happened in 2015. 😆

Anyone who hangs a banner recognizing a subjective opinion needs to be laughed at.

I mean 32-0 and unanimous #1 is a bit different than Kansas last year, and still would be ridiculous.

They aren’t fake. They just aren’t real national championships

What? You have 2 banners that claim you're national champions and say 5 time instead of 3. That is the definition of fake lol.
