So as most of you already know, UCF has had the tallest average starting lineup the past 2 years in all of the D1. That most certainly will happen this year too.

What you may not now is we play with all traditionally sized players for each of the 1-5. Well except for our 7'6 dominate center. But you get the point.

So here is the question. With everyone trying to be like SMU with their 5 wingers who are all 6'6-6'8, can a traditional lineup dominate in CBB today? Paradoxically, can being "traditional", be unique enough to create a competitive advantage on the court?

I know the AAC is the most diverse conference. So I'm curious to hear what fans from other conferences think.

Yes, I think it's because of defense. If they go to the same defensive rules as the nba, then maybe not.
The Tar Heels have proven to be able to. Unfortunately.

Roy likes to play inside out with 2 bigs along with a up tempo pace. With this style of play a deep bench is a must. If you’re going to play 4-5 wings you better have one.

I think a lot of you may change your mind once you see a lot of Nevada.

To me they are the best team in 2018-2019
Texas played them in the first round and Texas played one of their better games of the year and Nevada still won in OT

Then they had their come back on Cincinnati
Funny thing is Loyola of Chicago's big unatheltic center was the only person they couldn't push around in the paint and the guy couldn't even jump

They are the perfect example of NBA basketball at the college level
Basketball is Basketball period

True. But if you go to the spread style the nba does, those two bigs are exposed on defense. Until they do, teams that know how to play d with two bigs can win. Much as I hate to admit it, Roy can coach two bigs.
It's not what K and Duke are used to.
Had to resort to zone, and then we looked like a Chinese fire drill against Kansas.

Good stuff except from The Sheriff.

This biggest difference this year is that we are supposed to have 3 sharpe shooters behind the arch. Last year our 3 point specialist was hot or cold. That was the decider in most of our games.

We have not used 2 centers at the same time. I’ll have to watch some UNC basketball to see what Roy is doing. I know FSU plays bigs together and they are the 2nd best team in FL behind UCF obvi.

Even with Roy it depends on personnel. When he had Henson and Zeller was probably the best big men duo he had at being able to hedge screens and guard on the perimeter. But even those guys were at a disadvantage guarding high level guards outside. Guys like Meeks , Johnson , Hicks , all struggled first 2-3 years hedging and guarding pick and roll. Because as a big guy you have to be able to move your feet well and having serious length. Even a guy like Hansbrough who didn't have great length and was never considered a great defender , was an underrated defender on perimeter guys because he moved his feet so well. I was always more comfortable with him guarding on the perimeter than the post because he was easier to shoot over for big guys inside.

Yea but Roy has recruited so he has the big bodies like Manley , Brooks , and Huffman if he needs the traditional 2 bigs against say a UCF. But he also has the ability to throw a Brooks/Maye , Brooks/Little , Maye/Little interior combo at teams if he needs to match the opponents shooting and ability to spread the floor. Roy ideally likes to always have 1 interior guy on the roster that plays and can stretch/spread the floor.

Your guys’ depth is such a luxury. If I’m correct, depth is something that UNC is known for?

UCF has 4 types of centers this year. The dominant 7’6, the traditional athletic cbb 6’9, the more NBA like 6’10 and the Euro stretch 5.

There isn’t even a question that UCF is by far the most talented and has the most depth in our short 35 years of D1 basketball. So obviously our excitement and expectations are through the roof.

When I talked to Grant Hill this week and to the UCF basketball team during the tailgate last week, I told them “You got develop that dominant mindset. Let it evolve over the season. Be humble in practices so you can be dominant in Games.”

Yea it is , because Roy likes to wear teams out with depth and conditioning especially during regular season. But come tourney time the 7-8 best guys are the main ones playing.

UNC struggled some against big physical teams last year. They have to correct that and a big part of that is those freshmen bigs making notable strides.

Lots of teams play traditionally sized lineups and do well. I don't understand the question.

I love my UNC TAR HEELS!

Well Beilein is the best coach in basketball and has used the 6 7” to 6 8” guys for years. Next year he will be using a 7 2” center that can actually move.

Great Coach... absolutely and by all accounts a fantastic person.

Best? My homer take is nope.

Looking forward to the game this year... whole new cast of characters on our end.

I’ll be looking at Nova throughout this year.

You might want to watch you back this year with UCF Knights looking lethal as ever.
