Official gameday thread. Champions Classic

didn't he drop 30 his senior year against MSU? figured he would be much higher than he is on the list.

He went off, yes. Actually had 37. My table is showing 0-6-12-37 for his scoring outputs in the Champions Classic. The scoring obviously wasn't distributed evenly. He was an All-American as a sophomore, but I want to say Isaiah Briscoe locked him down pretty good.

Keel (is that his name) looked like a rich man's Lou Dort out there.

That's a fair comparison. Love his game. Wasn't sure who Duke's #2 guy would be, but it appears it very well may be Trevor Keels.

We evidently had 4 different players cramping in the game. Obviously, Banchero, Keels, and Moore. I would guess Mark Williams was the other one, as he was out for an extended period in the second half.

One guy getting cramps occurs all the time. Two players cramping? Not unheard of, but certainly not normal. But, four players from the same team? Has that ever happened in the history of the game? Goodness.

You think their periods were syncing up due to all the preseason bonding?

Is there a banana shortage in Durham?

That was really, really odd. Never seen anything like that. Football with two-a-day practices in 95 degree whether? That makes sense. But, inside an arena with A/C? Four guys? Weird. It's like everyone forgot to drink fluids for the day.

Occam's Razor: Coach K's jizz was extra salty yesterday.

Nah hopefully Duke peaked last night like they did with Zion
What happened that year never ceases to amaze me, it was such a fluke 99th percentile performance by Duke in front of a national audience vs UK to start the year and expectations literally went through the roof.

Then Jack White literally forgot how to shoot, turned out Barrett was a mediocre 3 point shooter, Reddish was incredibly inconsistent/over ranked and Tre Jones literally could not shoot. Zion covered up so much of Duke 2019's weaknesses that when his shoe exploded in that 1st UNC game and Duke got boat raced after, the flaws were exposed and that team lost all its swagger.

That was a flawed team with bad roster construction that just happened to feature perhaps the best freshman ever and another top 10 OAD.

2017 Duke and 2018 Duke had much more balanced rosters. Unfortunately 2017 Duke ran into a buzzsaw Gamecock team in Greenville that somehow morphed into a Final 4 team and 2018 Duke lost on a Grayson Allen shot that rimmed out in regulation vs KU in the Elite 8 and Malik Newman *literally* had the game of his career.

He's a great passer but he gets himself into trouble dribbling. Just needs to slow down and process what he's doing.
Ku started Dajuan Harris this game. Ku lists him at 6’, but that’s with every pair of socks he owns on and shoes (he’s probably closer to 5’ 10”). He doesn’t shoot much but he doesn’t turn the ball over. That is what we want from our point guard. With him and remy out there at the same time we are going to be abused by bigger guards (with remy at 5’ 11”), but the two of them not turning the ball over and making good passes should overcome their ‘short’ comings.

Malik took whatever he wanted that game--it was off the charts.

The jury is out on whether this year's Duke team is a bad, mediocre or good 3 point shooting team.

Moore's shot improved a lot so I would expect for him to shoot 35%+, same with Keels. Banchero, Griffin and Roach are X factors from distance.

I'm not sure zoning this Duke team would've worked though, Banchero was literally created in a lab to destroy zone defense. He would cook you from the elbow all day.

This is a lot of words to avoid criticizing Coach K. Sure you were flawed, but you had the best player of the 21st century in the ACC plus another All American on the roster. I believe 4 first round picks total. No excuse to look as shitty as they did in the tournament.

Its a single elimination tournament bud, anything can happen. You need a lot of luck to go your way. If they had crept past MSU, its possible they could've had an A game vs TTU and then beaten UVA, the eventual national champs, who they beat 2x in the regular season.

Duke only lost 2 games the whole year with Zion, Gonzaga in Maui and MSU in the Elite 8, and both were nail biters.

Should we also criticize KU, UK, Gonzaga and Nova's HOF coaches for underperforming in the tournament at various times too?

Yeah, that would definitely be the first time Self's been criticized for tourney losses. 🤣

Uh, yes? Cal gets ton of criticism for his tournament failures. Also the revisionist history is funny considering the damn near meltdown you had after the MSU loss.
