On our homeboard, he once argued that one of our NBA early entry guys should've stayed to become a legend and then start a local car dealership instead of taking the guaranteed NBA money.

Be prepared for some galaxy brain takes.

That was in reference to Caleb Swanigan, who is now 400lb and in jail in Indiana I believe.

Sometimes giving a person a truckload of money and a life on the road is not the best thing....

Why make millions of dollars when you can pull in $100,000 a year and reminisce about the glory days to 18 year olds that you give a car to on the down low for the good of Purdue basketball.

Ben Johnson currently holds the record for career winning percentage (100%) for any Big Ten coach in history. 😎 😉

Who the fvck is this jabroni? Three weeks in and this Purdue team is the best B1G team in the past decade? Pump the brakes a little.

"I give coach Painter a lot of credit for assembling the most complete team I've played against in a long time," said Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton. "Sometimes, you've got to call it like it is. This team has Final Four written all over it."

According to ESPN Stats and Info, Purdue is the only Division I team in the past decade to score 80-plus points while shooting at least 50% from the field and 39% from 3-point range in any seven-game span — and the Boilermakers just did it in their first seven games of this season. Needless to say, that's awesome. Needless to say, they look the part.

Isn’t $100,000 grand a shit ton of money? 😂

So the undisciplined dude would've been a great business owner. Good stuff!

The didn't understand the ****ing point. IF Biggie would have stayed and won a natty, he could have had a legacy in West Laffy to fall back on after his NBA career was over.

Now what does he have now that his NBA career is over? Which was completely predictable based on his body type and strengths as a player.

No one would have predicted that his life would crater as badly as it did, but giving a kid who grew up in homeless shelters millions of dollars and shipping him off to Portland was probably a big contributor to how badly his life went off the rails.

Every Purdue fan I know has said this is the best Purdue team they have ever seen going back to the 70's at least. Soon they will have a #1 ranking. That, in an of itself, makes this Purdue team historically noteworthy, since it rarely even happens.

Yea, what's better...having a life after basketball and a community that loves you or nah?

He had hookers and blow, but blew it

Does Purdue take their old players out back and shoot them when they are done playing in the NBA? What in God’s name are you talking about?

Swanigan was the poster child of guys who should stay for their Senior seasons. He is the picture of a guy whose ceiling was all-time great CBB player, but not a good fit for today's NBA. There were probably some people pushing him to jump into the NBA early, so they could cash in.

Instead of jumping into the draft, he could have stayed at Purdue and gone down as the first NPOY at Purdue since Robinson and potentially led his team to a National Championship. Instead, he made the safe choice of going early, and getting a little bit of extra money.

Might the additional time at Purdue helped him to become more mature and disciplined? Probably. It definitely wouldn't have hurt. The kid grew up in homeless shelters, substance abuse ran in his family. His NBA career was always a long shot at best. The good will and experiences he would have garnered would have set him up for life after basketball.

It's gonna be a fun year hanging out with you guys on this board. Looking forward to more of this enlightening discussion.

lot better than the little bit of extra money that he maybe made by jumping early.

Disagree. Dude made $5.1MM in the NBA. If he comes back, any manner of things could have happened to eliminate that. He could have got hurt. He could have lost his motivation and willpower like happened in the NBA. He could have not played as well and fallen to the 2nd round and signed a non-guaranteed contract.

Most college graduates today won't make $5.1MM in 30 years. Dude made it in 3.

Aren't you the dude who said Ron Desantis is an idiot? Because he went to Yale and is a presidential front-runner and is not hanging out on college sports message boards like you?

He could have got hurt, but probably not. The odds of that happening was less than 1%. He still could have made a lot of money playing pro basketball.

Chances are he would have made $4m in the NBA and would have had all the rest to back it up.

I’d love to see the math of how you came up with these arbitrary numbers.

There is no math to be had friend, since it's all speculation. I can guarantee you that he could have made a lot more than $5M playing basketball if his life didn't end up going off the rails due to substance abuse, even if he never went into the NBA early.

I can also guarantee you that he would be better set up for life once he straightens his life out if he had all those experiences and connections he could have made with another year at Purdue as the face of college basketball.

The connections don’t go away if you only play at Purdue for 2 or 3 years instead of 4. Are you guys going to disown Ivey after he leaves this year?

The amount of connections and goodwill he accumulated in connection with his Purdue career would be exponentially greater had he stayed for another year and had the kind of success that was very likely.

Think of it like this: if you go to Harvard business school, should you stay 2 years and graduate or leave after a year? The value of his brand and his story increased every year he was in that environment, and sticking around to win a natty and be the feel good story of CBB would only have helped.

The midwit take is always "take the money and run"
