*Official* 2017-2018 B1G In-Season Thread

I think if you red-shirt him and give him some time to develop, he could become a really solid player by junior or senior year. He doesn’t have much of a shot outside of the post, but he is quite good at rebounding and post skills (again, tallest opposing player was 6’7 so take it with a grain of salt.

He’ll redshirt. But I don’t know if we can wait 3-4 years. We’ll have Reuvers and that’s it in 2 years. Need to hit on some 2019 bigs or get a transfer, which won’t happen.

Was way happier with who we got over Curie

I don’t care. Of course you are.

He looks like the recruit I laugh at that Iowa gets because he’s slow and can’t jump. But you won’t see me calling him the next stud and list all his meaningless high school stats, favorite color, shoe size, star ranking, etc.

I'm not sure we could have asked for better, to be honest. Arkansas' athletes in the frontcourt could be tricky, but they are a seven seed for a reason and I think we are a matchup nightmare for Butler, as the Crossroads Classic showed in December.

Texas Tech is limping into the tournament as the three seed - and that beats the hell out of drawing Michigan, Michigan State, or a Tennessee team that each already beat us. Only thing that could have been better would have been Xavier as a one-seed; but if we make it that far, things are looking good even if we do have to face Nova.

I think if UCLA wins in Dayton, they could be a sneaky dangerous matchup in the Sweet 16 due to Holiday and Hands in the backcourt and Welch's ability to step out and shoot it from the five position. But a chance at revenge against Chris Beard sounds good to me - assuming Evans is still a bit gimpy.

TL;DR: Our draw is...

Wieskamp joins Barnes as the only player in Iowa to be named Iowa Gatorade POY as a JR then as a SR was named the Gatorade POY and Mr. BB.

About as good as we could’ve hoped for aside from not having Xavier as our 1. No blue bloods in our region. Nova was the 1 seed I wanted to avoid most, but you can’t really complain about the path there.
yeah this is close to where I'm at as well.

It's Iowa high school basketball. Color me unimpressed.
Barnes was a 1st round NBA pick, these were also from Iowa that never did this
Lafrentz
Collison
Hinrick
Uthoff
Jok
Paige

Barnes who played @ UNCheats
now Wieskamp

@hailtoyourvictor i have looked through multiple rankings and I can’t find a single one where DeJuilius was ranked ahead of Foster.

Who said anything about DeJulius being ranked ahead of Foster? All I said is that he out played Loyer the one time they played this year. I didn't even say DeJulis was better. I've literally never seen a video of Loyer playing because I don't care much about who MSU recruits.

So in 20 years they have a handful of NBA players?
no those are just the most noteable players. Iowa is not a state that produces many 4 or 5* players.

even Wisconsin took a couple of the Bohannon brothers and are recruiting #51 by Rivals PG Carton in the class of 2019, Patrick is in the top 35 by ESPN and Rivals in the 2019 class. then in the 2020 class F/C Foster is already a 5* by Rivals, when the talent is good it is really good.

And @MGC_07, Beilein is possibly the best guard developer in the country, so I'm not too concerned about where DeJulius is ranked.
And I wouldn’t be, but at this point Foster Loyer is the bettter basketball player, and no one can convince me differently. We may see DeJuilius take steps in the future, but right now I think Foster is the better basketball player.

But what does that have to do with what I said?

Kansas and Purdue from what I have seen have the most favorable draws to the E8 as a 1 and 2 seed.

Well, you know you are getting old when you can remember when tonight’s play-in game between
St. Bonaventure and UCLA would have been one of the premier matchups in the entire Tourney.

I feel like no one is really talking about OSU nationally. Zags in Boise is a really tough draw. OSU vs Xavier would be a fun as hell S16 game though.

I wonder about the "Just happy to be there" element to them. Plus being in a 5/12 game almost makes them too trendy of an upset pick.

When you have a guy like KBD that can flat take over a game, you've got a shot; but their guards really worry me in a tournament setting.

Yeah outside the B1G, OSU has pretty much been forgotten. Part of that was getting beaten a few times down the stretch. I was at the Selection show Sunday and Coach Holtman said he likes it that way. Love to see them get another shot at Zaga. They got beat pretty good, but it was a early, a different lineup. OSU is a lot better but first they gotta get past SDSU and 6-9 beast Mike Daum. He’s NBA.

Yep, our guards worry everyone. Lack of good guards really caught up with them in B1G. Hoping playing different teams in the tourney will help. KBD has to play huge.

College is a guards game, no doubt about that. We have seen what can happen if you have a guard that can take over in the tournament. Reason why I am going with Bama for a couple of games. Sexton is too damn good.

Yeah I feel like either Clemons or OSU will lose to a 12 seed. I picked Clemson because OSU has an AA that can carry the team.

UM got spanked by UNC early in the year too. But as you said, OSU and UM are different teams now.

Who gives a shit about rankings? That’s seriously you’re argument? Sparty has damn near had guards ranked higher than Michigan’s every year and our boys have consistently outplayed them

why should OSU be worried about SDSU, Iowa was ripped up one side and down the other for losing to them.

So you didn’t attend their heads up game this year then. There’s no way someone could have seen that game and came to that conclusion.

Like the draw. Wanted to avoid Nova but with the teams in the region you can't really complain. Don't know much of anything about potential opponents in Arkansas and Florida, just that the former is really athletic and the latter can really shoot. Gators were a top 10 team at PK80 IIRC so they are potentially dangerous if they start clicking but have been up and down for most of the year. Also don't know much about Texas Tech other than they are athletic and have Evans. If we do make it to Sweet 16, looking forward to playing another team on a neutral floor, unlike last year. We'll see what happens.

does that mean they were not a bad loss for Iowa? like so many were saying.

looks like they were far better than most on here wanted to give them credit for.

Who gives a shit? Your season is over. Iowa sucked. People thought it then and after plenty of games it came out to be true.

getting back to the level of Iowa the last couple years
2017Connor was a top 100 4* by ESPN and a 4* by Rivals,
2018 these were the 4* players in the state
#42 by Rivals and #71 by ESPN Wieskamp
#72 by ESPN Green who signed with UNI
2019
#31 by Rival Patrick #33 by ESPN
#51 by Rivals Carton
2020
#19 by Rivals Foster.

the talent is improving as is the numbers. will the state ever produce the numbers of say a Illinois or Indiana? NO, but what Iowa does produce in as good as any state in the nation. these were the most recent Mr. BB in the state of Iowa.
Barnes went to UNCheats was named the Gatorade POY as a JR and SR
Bohannon the one that went to Wisconsin
Uthoff who went to Wisconsin then transferred to IA
Paige who went to UNCheats
Jok who went to Iowa
Bohannon who went to Iowa was named the Gatorade POY
can't recall his name who went to I believe Drake
now Wieskamp, who was the Gatorade POY as a JR and SR.

very few have earned the Gatorade POY award.

Garza was the DC Gatorade POY and now PG Fredrick was named the Kentucky Gatorade POY.

Fran is expanding the recruiting area, in fact over the weekend he was in Tennessee recruiting 5* Wiseman a 6'10 PF.

You have a homeboard for this shit

Micgan fans, do any of you genuinely think DeJuilius is better than Loyer. If they give DeJulius Mr. Basketball it would be a travesty. Went out in first round of the state tournament. I could see Brandon Johns, as I truly think he will be very good, and is under rated as a recruit, but c’mon, seriously?

0 ranking sites have David ahead of him. Foster is the best player on the best team in the state.

So now we are taking the most recent head to head as the end all be all that a player is better. That’s like saying “Taj Gibson outplayed Draymond Green in there latest meeting, so Taj is clearly the better player”

I trust every single ranking site combined more than the most recent head to head match up.
