Are we at the beginning of a new era of college basketball? Feels like it with NIL, transfer portal, Covid ending, the retirement of legendary coaches from “modern era”, and how much the style of play has changed over the last few years to be more perimeter oriented.

It felt like the NBA changed 5 years or so ago as everyone adopted the Warriors style of play, became 3pt heavy, and more positionless. College basketball wasn’t going to be far behind style wise but all the other factors too have made it feel it’s a new era. As if the Modern era basically ended with the cancellation of the 2020 tournament and we’ve begun a new era of college basketball.

Does it feel like that to anyone else?

Definitely a new era with legalized pay-for-play and free agency. Amateurism is long gone in college athletics. The major conferences may as well just break away from the NCAA and do their own thing at this point.

I think you’ll see Blue Bloods continue as always, your next tier/“Sleeping Giant” programs make a leap forward and your “good every once in a while” schools shuffle, with those in big markets/with big donor bases take a step forward while those who don’t have the money to spend take a step back.

I call it the Rise of Orange, but you can call it "new era" if you like.
