My best friend (4 legged kind) could use some positive vibes.

My dog teddy (see my avatar) suffered a bad back/spinal cord injury yesterday afternoon while playing fetch. Despite being 8, he’s a rough and tumble kind of guy who LIVES for catching frisbee, playing at the beach, etc.

As of this morning the vet believes he has feeling and some movement in all four legs and paws, but there is some partial loss of function. There is hope that some treatment might allow him to regain some or all of it, but it’s unclear. The next 10 days are critical for him and we will be on the look out for signs of deterioration.

Best case scenario, he chills in the crate while I watch hoops all weekend. Worst case scenario...I don’t want to think about right now.

Anyway, I know he’s not a human but aside from my wife he’s my best friend. He is often the reason I get outside and go explore new places in town or hiking trails. My wife works call at a hospital so often it’s just me and teddy at the house. There are times where he’s literally by my side for 100 straight hours.

I know lots of people have bigger problems going on, but I don’t have a ton of close real life friends so I figured I’d post this here asan outlet. Send some positive vibes Teddy’s way!

Sorry to here that GE! Keeping him in my thoughts, I hope he’s alright.

Oh that’s brutal, hope he recovers quickly! I thought my guy broke his leg and two days later he was running full speed, sometimes they just need a bunch of rest and it turns out fine. How does that happen playing fetch? Scary.

Yeah man, dogs are so resilient. I’m hoping it’s more like me throwing out my back doing yard work.

He’s a freaking athlete and he only has one speed: fast. He makes aggressive cuts that would make Peter Warrick and Percy Harvin proud. So he was chasing a ball I threw fast and he stepped in a hole or something and kind of tumbled over right onto his back at full speed. Just caught it wrong. And he immediately yellped, looked back at me with a scared look and tried to come back and just barely had any coordination in his legs. They could move but not in the way he intended.

Wow that is crazy, but that seems really good that he could move even a little bit at least. Give that dude a bunch of love this weekend and I’ll be sending good vibes from me and my pup.

Dogs are more family than most people. I truly believe that! They love you unconditionally. More than they love themselves. I am a huge dog lover, and your post has made me sad, OP. I will be thinking about you and Teddy and sending you positive vibes. My boy turns 4 April 1st, and I hate it already!

4 is a great age! What type of pup?

sorry to hear that. No need to qualify that at all, dogs are better than people and there's nothing wrong with loving your dog more than you love other people (including our wives). Hope Teddy is ok and it's just a slowly recovering nerve injury.

We all have problems, but I doubt many of those problems are to big too pray for a friend in need. I pray (as in right now) that God will touch your dog and minimize the seriousness of his injury, I pray your dog will regain full mobility and continue to have a full life. Furthermore, I pray God will give you comfort and ease your mind as y'all go through this. Finally, I pray these things come to pass in God's glory.

A-men.

You have a good spirit, Della.

Just a brief update for those who care: Teddy is back home and resting now. He ate dinner and even wagged his tail once when he saw me. Not sure if it was voluntary (great sign) or involuntary (neutral sign), but at least he was happy.

We are gonna watch our fill of hoops this weekend and hopefully I’ll be able to share next week that he has started taking steps.

How’s he doing today @GE Nole?

He was able to pee on his “own.” He doesn’t really fully walk, per se. But he can move all four legs and kind of wobble to his spot. Then he sort of squats a little and pees. Apparently it’s good news that he has control of his own bowels. And that some function is coming back in each leg. Makes it more likely it’s something compressing a nerve along the spinal cord, as opposed to something being permanently severed.

Just curious, do you have pet insurance.I'm trying to actually meet someone other than my wife who does.

My pooch has been through some shit. These supplements really improved her overall health and movement. She's 11 in human years, and like your dog, she's either full tilt or nothing.

I have a little frenchton named Smokey. I can totally see where you are coming from @GE Nole I hope your little one is doing better and will be wishing him a full recovery. Dogs are so awesome and so full of love.

We do not. But my wife’s sister does and we have talked about doing it for our next dog. Teddy being 8, and already having Acl surgery when he was younger...starting now would be some high premiums given his history.

Good luck Nole. Lost our dog a few years ago in my avatar. I can't lie dude I'll never get over it. Hoping for good recovery for yours and you can cherish more good times.

Looks like your dog was well loved and enjoyed a nice life. Nothing like the way a dog looks at it’s humans unconditionally. I know Teddy is closer to the rainbow bridge than he is to birth, but as you said, hoping to still make another 4-5 more years of great memories with him. Even if it’s more casual walks and less frisbee catching.

I can relate. Lost our 2 Terriers about 3 and 5 years ago. One to liver desease, the other to kidney. They lived long lives tho, 14 and 14 1/2. The wife and I were devastated. Still hurts.

I recommend books by Karen Anderson. Provides some comfort whether you believe everything she says or not.
