Indiana vs. Purdue- last 25 years

Why hasn't Purdue won any championships?
Generally speaking, talent. You don't see many Purdue guys on NBA rosters over the past 20 years.

But Keady was a big overachiever in conference play and a big underachiever in the tournament. Painter's best teams have also had some key injuries (Hummel x2, Haas), but generally speaking we just haven't consistently had the talent, and when we have had those windows, we've had injuries or under-performed.

People trying to troll NIT teams continues to be odd to me.

Also OP forgot:

Sweet 16's: PU 9, IU 5
Elite 8's: PU 3, IU 1
Conference tournament titles: PU 1, IU 0

Purdue has never been a sexy destination for elite recruits. So they've won by having great gameday coaches (IMO) and a great system. That creates a lot of consistency throughout the season (hence the conference championships) but when you get to a one and done tournament, the team with more talent tends to rise to the occasion more often than not.

Also, Purdue has now reached 5 Sweet Sixteens or further under Painter.
  • In 2009, Purdue lost to 1 seed Connecticut
  • In 2010, Purdue lost to 1 seed and eventual national champ Duke a couple of weeks after Robbie Hummel tore his ACL
  • In 2017, Purdue lost to 1 seed Kansas
  • In 2018, Purdue lost to 3 seed Texas Tech a week after Isaac Haas broke his elbow
  • In 2019, Purdue is still playing after beating the 2 seed Tennessee and now have to play 1 seed Virginia
Between the bracket never breaking for us and a couple of painful injuries late in the season, we just haven't been able to get over the hump.

Gene Keady's best chance was in 1994 with Glenn Robinson (the last player to average 30 and 10) and G-Rob hurt his back the night before losing to Duke in the Elite Eight. He played but was clearly hurting.
