Duke vs. Kentucky

(Pssssttt....I have a secret...you aren't required to read or comment). You're welcome
That's real cute. My response to that is, no shit. But y'all can also start another thread about Kentucky football and their amazing bowl game year.

Kentucky has a good football team this year. And if I’m being honest, I think they beat us by a couple scores. However, I don’t think they’re playoff caliber. Stoops has them on the right track though. I’m also excited about Satterfield. The results might not show immediately, but it takes a while to rebuild, which is exactly what stoops did.

We are still a QB and a few playmakers away from being where we want to be. Also expected this defense to be a little better, but that has been much more consistent over there years than our offense has.

Recruiting at skill positions is going really well for UK right now. If we can ever land a decent QB, watch out for this team.

Kentucky vs. Duke

Spread: Duke (-1)

This is of course the first time since these two programs have met since back in the 2018 Champions Classic, when Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett blitzed Kentucky in a 39-point route in Indianapolis.

That was obviously a long time ago, and there are no players on either roster who were part of that game. But if you think it's not on the mind of both fan-bases coming into this one, you'd be sadly mistaken.

In terms of the game itself, well, it will be fascinating to see each program rebooted after disastrous 2020-2021 Covid seasons.

Obviously at Duke, the Coach K retirement tour begins here, and as much fun as it is to poke at the Blue Devils, Coach K's final squad will be a loaded. Paolo Banchero is, in my opinion the best freshman in America and the future No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, but there is plenty of talent beyond him as well. Jeremy Roach got valuable time at point guard last year and Wendell Moore is a former five-star prospect who seemingly has to break out at some point. Mark Williams showed flashes as a freshman, and don't sleep on Trevor Keels, a powerful, five-star freshman guard.

Then there's Kentucky, a program which went through one of the most drastic transformations in college hoops this off-season. They will be led in 2021-2022 by four marquee transfers, highlighted by point guard Sahvir Wheeler (who led the SEC in assists last year at Georgia), Oscar Tshiebwe (a former McDonald's All-American who led West Virginia in scoring and rebounding in 2019-2020) and Kellan Grady, a four-time All-A10 performer at Davidson.

Beyond them are the typical freshmen stars (TyTy Washington is the name to know this year) and don't sleep on the returnees from last year as well. Keion Brooks is fully healthy after missing the first half of last year and will probably be the player most tasked with guarding Banchero. Meanwhile Davion Mintz is back as well after averaging double figures a season ago.

With Wheeler and Washington doing the bulk of the ball-handling, Mintz will be free to focus more on filling up the basket, which he did, shooting 38 percent from three this year.

Quick Pick/Thoughts:

This game truly feels like a toss-up between two teams that really could be national championship contenders by the end of the year. But in a toss up, and this is still unofficial, I'll go ahead and roll with Kentucky.

To its credit, Duke looked good in a secret scrimmage against Villanova. At the same time, Kentucky should have plenty of bodies to throw at Banchero, especially if Jacob Toppin (who sat out Kentucky's exhibition win Friday against Kentucky Wesleyan) is ready to go. Also, while there are a bunch of new parts on Kentucky's roster, they will have more college experience than Duke at virtually every spot on the court, as the Blue Devils will rely mostly on first and second year college players (Banchero, Keels, Roach, Williams).

Still, if possible I'd wait to see two things before making any official bet.

First, wait to see if there are any injury updates on Toppin and CJ Fredrick, both of which sat out Kentucky's firs exhibition game. If either or both are out (specifically Toppin) that changes the dynamic of this game for me.

Two, wait to see what the over/under spread is here, as the over may be more appealing for two talented teams, that are still figuring things out on defense.

Apparently he's got a new site from the 90's.

I said before that I thought it could be a bad sign that TyTy was being called their top player. He’s talented but not “carry the team on his back as a freshman” talented.

i said the same thing on house of blue. i’m not exactly well liked on house of blue.

admittedly, he’s better than i thought but you’re right, he’s still not “best player on a title contender as a freshman” good.

it’s looked like a typical cal team though. no real flow on offense, bad defensive rotations at the start due to lack of chemistry.

probably looking ahead. but that only accounts for so much.

i had just hoped despite so many new players we’d look a little better at the beginning because we at least had guys that have played college ball and played at a high level. just hasn’t been the case.

Our defense just sucks. Cats shot 57% from the 3 on 19 shots. Damn we need to shoot more 3's. Washington is perfect from the 3 in the exi games. He's playing solid. Makes good decisions. Wheeler out rebounded Brooks. Wheeler, Washington and Grady were really good. Brooks had 1 rebound. Toppin is better. Collins will be drafted, but so far he's a bust. Too thin to do anything inside. Not going hard after Kofi was a mistake.

Cal's teams use to extend the shooters well beyond the arc. Got burned by fluke shooting 15 made 3's in the first half. 0 2nd half. Defense extended the shooters.

Embrace the 3 that's the only chance we got lol. Duke's gonna roll over us....

He's not being asked to carry the team. He's doing exactly what he's been coached on. Playing in the team concept and letting the game come to him. His stats are very good so far. Between him and Wheeler, they're dishing out double digit assists. TyTy is perfect from the 3 6-6. He is the best player on the team. I imagine as the season goes on, Washington, Grady and Toppin will get more involved in scoring.

We've been a thrown together high school all-star team for too long. Now we are a thrown together transfer portal team I guess...every year a team not used to playing together is thrown together and pushed out on the court. The results since 2015 have been predictable, disappointing and unacceptable.

We've looked soft and very average in these first two scrimmages, with no floor leader and no star player. Not a typical Kentucky team - we haven't had one of those since 2017. This team needs to grow up fast.

They were 11-15 from 3 in the 1st half and 4-15 in the 2nd.

Did Cal gain some weight in the off-season or was it just his shirt yesterday? I remember him looking a little stocky last year too but for some reason when I saw him I was surprised. Maybe it was just the angle I saw on TV.
