I fully encourage you to do some research into it. It's really eye opening how much we feed on fear in the news and in general. Homicide is down. Violent crimes are down.

Nah, but they probably worried about drunk drivers quite a bit. Some older guys I know tell me how drinking and driving use to be pretty normal and cops didn't care too much. If you got pulled over for drinking and driving cops would give you a ride home or follow you home.

It's not even close how much safer the US is today than at any other point in history.

Not even close. And, when crimes ARE committed, we're infinitely more likely to catch the criminal and bring them to justice than ever before (technological advances in DNA and evidence gathering, security cameras, fingerprint databases, etc.).

But, you just HEAR and READ about things more when they happen now than you did 30-40 years ago. And people get so afraid and worked up.

When the world is actually a FAR, FAR better place now than it was 30, 40, 50 years ago (across all fronts: Civil Rights, Gender Equality, Violence & Death, Medical Advances, etc, etc, etc). Are we perfect? No, but MAN are things so much better now than ever before, and I don't know how anyone could think otherwise.

Uhhhhhh... Yeah, alright. I can accept that. It should not, however, be used as a justification for not addressing imperfections and continuing to improve. It's good to include for the sake of perspective, though, definitely.
