Got turned down by the Loyola Chicago coach

Sure wish Mustapha Heron stayed with us this past season...

Tim Cluess, he has built a MAAC powerhouse at Iona, his one drawback is he is 60, but spent his career in the NYC area and knows how to navigate the landscape already so wouldn't need to reinvent himself, SJU could do alot worse. I would actually suggest he is an upgrade over Mullin who other than being a local legend probably had no idea what he was doing and somehow put a NCAA team on the floor.

Did Chris Mullin even coach that team? He seemed so passive on the bench and in huddles during game stoppages.

Probably not. SJU begged him to take the job, I don't think his heart was ever in it, they basically wanted a big name for recruiting purposes and I would guess his staff handled most of the in game coaching and day to day. He does leave them in a better position than when he took the job which is a surprise, assuming they don't have a bunch of guys transferring out their roster was primarily underclassmen so they should have a lot coming back and a coach that actually is a career coach will undoubtedly do better with game prep/in game adjustments. They could be dangerous next year.

Lol this thread may be the only ones paying attention to this coaching search, but the names that are turning them down are just sad, they couldn’t poach a former player that is a career D2/MAAC coach? Lol. Then turned down by the coach of UMBC, about as small time of a program as you can imagine in college basketball... dumpster fire is putting it lightly.

Dumpster fire of epic proportions. Sad for a school that's so steeped in basketball tradition and history. Some of the great coaches and names in the sport's history. Al McGuire, Lapchick, Frank McGuire, Carnesecca and now this nonsense going on almost 20 years now. Just a shame.

It's sad that the administration (the President, VP of Admin and the board) are SO clueless.

Just listen to this Mike Repole interview (Vitamin water billionaire booster and SJU alum) talking to Francesa (another SJU alum) and this sums up the pathetic state of SJU basketball. ..

That was brutal, sounds like SJU is dead in the water and will need to rebuild again with what will likely be an unqualified coach with the deck stacked against him. Awhile back there was a thread about the Big East and if its "power conference" status should be in question and I think yes. Other than Villanova its several schools who's name value exists because of accomplishments that are pushing 40-50 years in age mixed with some flash in the pan mid majors. The program backpacking the load to keep the conference "legit" is Villanova and who knows what happens to them once Jay Wright leaves. A private school in an underexposed conference just needs a year or two of irrelevance off of a bad hire to follow the path of SJU and Georgetown for decades.

That’s about as weak of a hire imaginable. A 59 year old with no ties to the area that was just fired likely looking for one last pay day, a 30 something assistant would have been a much more productive hire. You’re going to suck anyway atleast take on the upside.

He will be better than Mullins. The bar is not set that high.

Great hire for Johnnie's. If I couldn't get Pitino, I hire Mike. Like Bruce P, his kids played hard for him. Every game was a battle, and most opposing coaches dreaded playing in Fayetteville.
Most basketball minds think he could win the NIT as early as next year. Good Luck Michael!

Uninspiring but safe. The guy seems to be on the backside of his career however can't argue with his results. Compared to where St. John's has been these last two decades this seems stable. He's hiring two local recruiting gurus dialed into the AAU scene supposedly. We'll see if he can at least get the program on solid footing.
