Coach of the Year to this point

Haha. I don't think any of the blueblood coaches really have an argument this year so far. Some years they do and don't get credit. This year they have all done ok, none just awful, but nothing spectacular relative to expectation.

I’m just trying to trigger something....then sit on the sidelines and watch.

Haha. Yeah, I knew you were messing around, which is why I laughed. Didn’t want you to think I was being my sometimes anti-Duke, ready to brawl self.

Not Buzz Williams. Va Tech has played 2 good teams and been blown out by both of them. Overhyped for at least the third year in a row.

although I agree that Barnes has been great and should be up there, I don't agree with your logic at all. Where they were ranked pre-season before LAST season has no bearing on the job he has done this season. Fact is they were pre-season top 5-10 THIS season so their success this year is no surprise at all. Still a great job though.

That said my vote goes to Bennet. How UVA has rebounded from the adversity of last season's epic fail is far more impressive than how Tennessee has managed from being overlooked 2 years ago.

Barnes has Tennessee where it is without a top 100 recruit on the roster. Think about that a minute, who else can say that this year or since the turn of the century for that matter.

Barnes also has a roster loaded with talented upper classmen. Who else can say that this year or since the turn of the century for that matter?

They are talented 2 & 3 stars that he has developed. Isn't that the signature of great coaching?(more with less)
They are one of the top assist teams in the country, another sign of coaching and buying into "team". The sum of the parts is greater than the parts alone.

yep, great coaching for sure. But, on the flipside, those recruits are now mature and developed and have great chemistry from being together for years. Huge advantage over the teams loaded with youngsters, especially in a year when the freshman class looks pretty weak overall. How much in game coaching does Barnes even need to do when you have leaders like Williams, Schofield and Bone out there running things?

Is that more impressive than taking a hodgepodge team of talented youngsters and molding them into a great team by the end of the year?

Let's get some things straight. Last year the Vols were picked to finish 13th in a conference of 14 (they had Williams and Schofield). This year the Vols are way better than last year and have risen to #1 at least for now. There are countless teams with upper classman level 2 & 3 star talent that never amount to anything. Williams and Schofield are what they are today because of Barnes coaching.

don't care where they were picked to finish last year, totally irrelevant to the discussion.

This year they were consensus top 5-10 team in the country and are living up to the hype. They, along with Virginia, are the most upper classman loaded team in the top 10.

Begs the question, what do people find more impressive...getting a team of talented upper classmen to play well or doing it with a team that never played together before this season?

I also don't like how COTY automatically goes to a guy with a top of the rankings team. It's the easy way out. Granted, all those teams at the top usually have coaches doing amazing and worthy jobs, but what about the guys who did unbelievable jobs or overcame all sorts of misfortune and managed to get their team to play at a level higher than it should've? I don't think those guys get nearly enough hype for COTY.

Tennessee hasn't finished anywhere yet this season. Let's let the season play out... before crowning anybody anything lol

UT has to thank Alabama for not hitting at least 50% of their free throws the 2nd half for the #1 ranking. UT has a lot of work ahead of them...

Dudes team lost to a 16 seed last year and he has them playing like one of the best teams in the country

We were one of the best teams in the country last year too. Losing to a 16 seed doesn't change that. We lost 3 games the entire season. One of them just happened to be at the worst possible time.

My vote goes to Rick Barnes. I don't think they have the best resume of the top teams but they have been consistent and they have dismantled some pretty solid teams. Doing it with less "talent" than other coaches is impressive as well.

They do have 2 projected first rounders this year. So there's some talent there.

Of course. But some programs have inherent advantages when it comes to recruiting. Those advantages aren't solely due to the coach they have.

I'm talking about Della saying how Tennessee doesn't have a single top 100 recruit on it's roster and using it as a trump card. Recruit better. Tennessee isn't Fordham.

True, but they were nobodies until Barnes coached them up. Your statement only strengthens Barnes for COY.

I don't believe that for 1 minute lol. Williams has a work ethic you can't coach. The Admiral is much better this year. Now I will give Barnes some credit for that. He's driving more and he should.

UT is barely scraping through their last couple games. Let's be patient and see how it all works out. I would give Barnes a lot of credit if the awards were handed out today. You think bama and vandy gave you fits, wait til you get a load of us. Our guys have learned defense, finally lol..The offense is starting to get it, but a ways to go yet.

This is really the only point that need to be made.
