Calipari has serious interest in UCLA job

Are they really better than banners from one coach?
depends. Is it better to win from different eras and be a staple as long as the sport was invented, or a team had one really great coach.

I think comparing IU to Duke is perfect. You both have 5 titles. One team has won more recently, and the other has won the same amount but spread out with multiple coaches.

IU and Duke is head to head in this debate.

One shows, the program itself will win titles, the other says a single coach will win titles.

I get more comfort from the 5 in my lifetime, than I would from 3 in my lifetime and 5 during my grandpa's childhood.

I can understand that, such as you can understand multiple generations winning titles and watching them together. Winning tradition.

"I can remember watching UK win titles with my dad and he can remember watching UK win titles with his dad" compared to "I get more comfort from what I witnessed".

It's just different mindsets between two different fan bases.

Your parents and grandparents are Kentucky fans? And they watched them when they were young and now watch them with you? If so, yeah that's cool. If not, nice try.

You're missing the point, this isn't about me. RollLaugh

And yes, I have an 80 year old aunt. She's the oldest in my family still living, and she watched UK games long before I was born. Talks about the times she listened on the radio back in the day.

It's about the hypothetical fan with an anecdotal story of nostalgia that's better than other hypothetical fans?
I can't argue with that logic.

I'm sure Duke fans would have like to won the tournament prior to K. '78 and '66 you came really close.

Cawood Ledford!
He's one guy that my family has never met, but feel like he's one of the family.

I've noticed over the years, one thing that sticks out is, every old family can point to a place where they can pick up the radio the best in their "neck of the woods".

I'm sure UK games pinpointed those places.

Exactly! My grandpa is 91 and he’s the reason I’m a UK fan. I grew up two houses down from my grandparents so I was always at their house and we always watched UK play. I could listen to him talk about UK all day. Best guy ever!!!

It's just different mindsets for some. For some, their parents were probably never into sports. The children learned later in life about their favorite team from other influences and then became fans.

They're still fans but went about it a different way. Some say fans aren't fans unless they went to the school. I'd put a life time of fandom and such over those 4-6 years, but i'm biased.

Growing up a fan > becoming a fan in late teens/early 20's.

It’s been awhile for any team that way not named Kansas.
Later today, I'm going to look up how many championships teams west of the Mississippi and compare them to the Big 10 have in the last ...25 years 20/30 idk...recently. I don't know yet and don't have time to look it up yet. I'm guessing it's close.

You’ve had a great, impressive run in this thread. Well argued, counsel.

Where does UCLA CURRENTLY rank in terms of desirable jobs? Not historically, but in its current condition.

National Titles is about the only commonality. But not exactly equal since Indiana won 5 titles in 23 games, whereas Duke won 30 games - and two of IU's titlte were before at-large bids were allowed.

Here are some numbers with noticeable differences:

All-Time Wins
Duke: 2,144
Indiana: 1,817

NCAA Tournament Wins
Duke: 112
Indiana: 66

Final Fours
Duke: 16
Indiana: 8

Elite 8 Appearances
Duke: 21
Indiana: 11

Also, I would note that the Big Ten Tournament has been held for 22 years and IU has yet to win a title, meanwhile Duke has won 11 in the same time frame. Also, it's been 17 years since IU's won more than 2 games in the tournament.

It’s not the best job in cbb. UNC and Duke are both better jobs right now. It’s hard to admit that but it’s true. Those programs have what seems like dozens of alumni at Espn as talking heads constantly spinning and propogating for them. Much better in State talent. And are seemingly held to a different standard by the sports governing body.

I don’t think he’s going anywhere but there are reasons to go to UCLA over Kentucky. I get exhausted just thinking about all the commitments Cal has as the Uk basketball coach.

A lot of those are at UCLA too. I think there’s less pressure at UCLA though. And I don’t think he cares for our fan base. I could see where apathy could make the job easier.

We have the best and worst fan base in the sport at the same time. By that I mean we’re clearly the most invested but there are drawbacks to that. Often unrealistic expectations. I think that effects our players. And it has to wear on the coach.

If it’s about a raise, im baffled by the timing of it.

I MIGHT be able to buy Duke is a better job. And that’s if I’m being generous. But UNC? What. No. Just no. No.

Wouldn’t UNC be a better job because, according to most UK fans, UNC is the media darlings & untouchable by the ncaa?

Its UNC > UK > DUKE > KU > Texas Texas's recruiting hotbed and insane budget should make it that great, they are just terribad at supporting anything but foot all
