Bobby Knight Returns to IU

Yeah, this. I don't think it was a joke. I think it was a man(Knight) not understanding. Its how it is with my wifes dad. He had a stroke. Nowhere near the person he was. His reaction to things now, are not what they were before.
It very well could have not been a joke, it did look like he was upset when he grabbed the back of his neck. But, I am very confident that if he was actually mad about it.....it was the disease causing the anger....not because he has any issues with him.

  • That Knight punched him in the back of the head with a closed fist during a walkthrough for an NCAA Tournament game against Seton Hall.
  • That inside a sideline huddle during a 1989 game against Louisville -- the game when Sports Illustrated famously captured a photo of the coach pushing Jadlow back onto the court -- Knight cracked a clipboard over Jadlow's head.
  • That after an NIT game in New York City, an enraged Knight once dug his hands so deeply into Jadlow's sides, he left bruises. Jadlow includes a picture of the bruises Knight left; "It's weird because I never carried a camera," he was telling me Friday over a Stromboli at Nick's. "But I had this thought, 'You know, if I ever write a book about my experiences, I want to have a picture of what he did to me.' "
  • That Knight made a habit, with Jadlow and others, of grabbing players by the testicles and squeezing.
  • That Knight continually called Daryl Thomas a "(bleeping) p-----" and once instructed the managers to wallpaper Thomas' locker with pictures of female genitalia. Knight also liked to throw tampons at Thomas, who took more abuse than anybody on Jadlow's teams.
  • That on the flight home after the 1986 NCAA Tournament loss to Cleveland State, Knight tore up the plane and ultimately grabbed Thomas by the neck and shook him violently.
  • That Knight made sport of Jadlow's facial tic in front of the entire team; in the book, former IU teammate Mark Robinson wrote that Knight yelled at Jadlow, "If you don't stop the (bleeping) twitching, I'm going to throw your ass out of here."
  • That during a practice, Knight forced Dean Garrett and Keith Smart to run hours of sprints while barking like dogs since they were, in his words, "playing like (bleeping) dogs."
Why are we celebrating this guy again? There's a huge difference between being a hard ass and being straight up abusive. Anyone who thinks going through stuff like that makes you a stronger "man" or more well equipped to deal with the world is deluding themselves.

He was a great coach, but he was and is a shitty, shitty person. And yes, shitty people can have likable and endearing qualities to them. That doesn't make them any less shitty.

Recker? Really? AJ is one of the nicest dudes I have ever met. Recker on the other hand whined as much as any kid I've ever seen.

With that being said, I spoke in depth with two former IU guys yesterday. As you said---it goes both ways.
You might have a different opinion if you were at the game he threatened to kill one of your brethren, as a JV coach no less. He straight up told a ref he would come to his house and kill him. Had to be escorted out of the building by security. Like I said, he’s a tool.

Tools aren't formed in a vacuum.

At least Vitale played it off as a joke, had to hurt when he realized it wasn't though.

I don't see it that way at all...but whatever.
How could you not? That's not a joking face... nor is the hand gesture he was making. Besides, Knight appeared cordial until Vitale tried to grab him by the neck for a hug. 80-year-old men don't grapple like that in a joking manner, their bones are made of jello. Hell, Knight can barely walk on his own, you think he's a physical comedian?

You seem far more invested in this than I am. I simply disagree. Unless Vitale comes out and says something different I'll maintain my opinion. Not much to get worked up about either way.

people are complicated...he has always been a vexing character...there are a lot of admirable attributes but there are also many incidents that show his weaknesses and shortcomings. I don't see him as a black and white character, like most of us, he is varying shades of gray.

Selfishly, I wish he would have taken his espn gig seriously...he could have imparted so much knowledge but it was obvious he did dot prep at all, unless he was already losing some of his faculties at that point.

He did give us the most honest and best breakdown of a game I have ever seen though.

In 2008 or 2009, analysts were asked who they liked in the Big 10 tournament matchup between like a 6) Iowa and 8) Minnesota. Everybody spent 10 seconds saying who they liked and went it got to him he just replied “I don’t care about this game.” The analysts laughed. I laughed. This board created a thread and we all laughed. Nobody on ESPN has ever said anything more truthful than that. Lol

I don't think it was anger . I think it's the fact the man's mind is failing him. He has the same look on his face that my father in law has:
Lost.
It's sad, TBH.

that is funny...I meant his work as a game analyst/broadcaster with Brent...he had moments but he often got tripped up because he did not do the prep work to know the players names...that would be fine but he often stumbled over it...hell just use numbers and get the analysis...the last 2 seasons of his gig were disappointing and painfully awkward

I’m an Illinois fan. I remember that Illinois was one of the teams and I believe you are correct that the other was Minnesota.

Yeah, I kind of remember that. I think he would also mispronounce Sherron Collins name when he was a first team All American. It clearly showed he paid attention to literally nothing going on in CBB.

Seeing that video is extremely sad and awkward. No way he was just kidding around. Poor Vitale, had to just clap and shake it off like no big deal. Props to him for keeping it together. I guess I hadn't even realized how long BK has been out of coaching. He was at TTech in what, 2007 maybe? I was just graduating middle school at the time. Time is scary.

You "graduated" from middle school?

You guys didn't have middle school graduating. I had a graduation ceremony from Kindergarten, 8th grade and HS.

Maybe we don't expect our students to get to another level and should have the experience.
Like, your name called out and you walk across the stage and receive a certification? No.

In 6th grade we had a ceremony since we were all moving on past elementary school but it wasn't a graduation.

I had multiple schools, mine ceremonies were, Kindergarten. Elementary went from 1-6, middle 6-8. graduation after 8, HS 9-12.

When I met my wife here in Louisville my first public "introduction" as her fiancee' was at her 20th 8th grade Reunion. Catholic school 8th grade graduations are a very real thing in Louisville and are generally midweek rather than weekends; my daughter's was two years ago and my son's is in May.

i feel like we had a graduation but it wasn’t drawn out or anything. It was just kind of a send off to high school. I went to Manual, so most people I know from middle school either went there or Male, Trinity, or X. It was practically like going to another school with the same students, just a new environment and different teachers obviously.

Manual is where the poors go!

Yep, me too. As did my son. Went to his Kindergarten graduation....Elem graduation...MS graduation, and HS.

I've always thought this was normal.

I went through 8th grade graduation. I remember my mom taking me shopping to get a sweet purple silk shirt...

My kids didn’t go through 8th grade graduation and I heard a couple of years ago that my school stopped doing them as well citing budget concerns.
