When did The Modern Era of cbb begin in your opinion?

All righty then.

I'm not naming any names, but there are some people out there who are insecure, easily triggered by modern era comparisons, drink a lot of bourbon and threaten refs. And don't make any wild assumptions about who I'm referring to. Assuming makes an ass of you and me.
I did that one time. Let it go man.

One guy threw a tantrum because a poster had the gall to create a modern era ranking.

I don't know why anyone would throw a tantrum about modern era rankings. Sounds like a loser.

This is what happens when your A D D gets in the way WHILE you’re trying to twist whats being said.

1985 is the beginning of the modern era to me. 3pt line, shot clock, and tournament expansion all within quick succession. It also wasn’t long after either that basketball style of play changed a bit to being more athletic as well. I will occasionally go back and watch KU from 1986 through 1993 and it always amazes me how different and how m much the style of play changes during that period of basketball.

I would argue OAD created sublet era of the Modern Era but it didn’t change enough of the game for me to consider it part of its own.

Now I believe we have entered a new era of college basketball following Covid in 2020. Before Covid the style of basketball was already changing some to far more 4-out style basketball than the 2 big style of basketball that was implemented more during the modern era. Covid happened and within 2 years of it happening the Transfer Portal really took hold, NIL began, and several of the coaches that dominated the Modern Era retired. It’s really created a whole different feel around college basketball the last 2 years.

Yup, I vote for 2016 to be the start of the modern era, that way, I can include UK's success in the 1940's and say UK is the greatest in the modern era. Makes so much sense.

I see you posted this twice and didn't think it through either time. 🤣

TV is too broad, because it's been around since the 60's and it's not going away in our lifetime.

I'm not confusing when it started, I get the subject, I'm just saying it shouldn’t be a deciding factor, because it's something that is going to span multiple eras, unless you want this era to last 100 years.

While you can’t create an era for each rule change, you also can't base it on something that is going to be around for a hundred years.
Radio and Television made Kentucky basketball.

In the Rupp era Kentucky had two clear channel radio stations carrying UK basketball. Then in the late '50's two TV stations, WAVE in Louisville and WKYT in Lexington, basically started a UK Network that spread to many station in Kentucky and surrounding states. Long before ESPN and other "networks" I was watching the "UK Network".

In 1976 I was transferred to Florida the first time. I was back to getting radio instead of TV, except for NBC's game of the week. Then I was saved by cable TV and then in the fall of 1979 ESPN started and I was saved! 1983 I was transferred to Evansville so I could again pick up the UK Network games and with a combination of NBC, UK Network and ESPN I never missed a game. In 1986 I was transferred to Houston, TX and because of the UK Network I did not miss one game. The UK Network was on satellite so I bought one and watched every darned game. Even the games that were out of market were on satellite. I had died and gone to TV basketball heaven. I then used a satellite dish later after being transferred to Baltimore, MD and back to Jacksonville, FL.

So based on my history of "watching" UK basketball I state that the Modern Era began in 1958 with my ability to watch UK basketball on TV. I even got to watch the NCAA tourney on WAVE-TV years and years before NBC offered it.

UNC, Duke, Indiana, Kansas et.al. did not have many games on TV like UK. I know because I lived in North Carolina, Maryland, Indiana, Florida and Texas and those states were sport deserts when it came to college basketball on TV. The last Kentucky game that I have missed either on radio, TV or being there was in December 1965 when I had a chemistry test in college that I could not miss.

Sorry for hurting feelings but Kentucky had basketball on TV before any. Video tape was made available in late 1977 and I can prove how much UK was on TV because I collected the games. How did I get those games living in Maryland, Indiana, Florida and Texas? UK Network, NBC, CBS, ESPN et.al. and all used satellite for their distribution and was available anywhere in the US. Satellite TV was expensive when they first came out with it, but the dividends were great. My den was always full of UK fans and they would furnish the beer!

Duke’s TV presence in the 1960’s is a cross I have to bear daily and a dark cloud that hangs over me. It may not have been your intention, but my feelings are certainly hurt.

😆

So......explain how starting the modern era in 2016 would make Kentucky the greatest team of the modern era.
Post 646 in the Helms thread. You’re referring to me, because that's what you do:

You and others want to limit every discussion to all-time stats. You know this. One guy threw a tantrum because a poster had the gall to create a modern era ranking.

Now, I have been very consistent in my stance about what my modern era is, not the structure, I'm talking about the way the game is played on the court. But then you go make a comment like that and it makes no sense, because nobody… .especially me, is saying anything about all time stats.

Your A D D is so bad, that you can’t even keep up with all the bullshit exaggerations that you post.

Nope. That was JC. Can you get through a single post without being wrong? 🤣

Now can you answer the question? How exactly would Kentucky be the greatest team of the modern era if it began in 2016?

You're the one saying UK fans are doing that. I've been saying things that actually make KU look strong and UK down, so the issue here, is you.

Why are you always in some kind of battle with UK fans? Why does UK bother you so much?

I am sorry for hurting your feeling Wojo! But you probably were not born, so the hurt should not last long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am just trying to put things in perspective for the young guys here.

I lived in North Carolina in the middle 1960's. The TV college basketball market was so small that I could not find it. But it was easy getting tickets to the games. I was engaged to a UNC girl; however, UNC was not coed with the boys in Chapel hill and the girls in Greensboro. At the time it was supposed to be coed but it was not.

Of course at that time the ACC was not holding many titles.

I don't care which team someone roots for. I like plenty of Kentucky fans. Ever notice that I can banter with Kevin, lurker, Random, cd, RipThru, etc without any of us getting bent out of shape?
