What Big name coach will call it quits first (not age or health based)?

Boeheim plans to coach until Buddy graduates, so that's 3 more years. That's the bar. Any other coach picked would have to be out in 2 years or less.

Cal has said he only wanted to coach at UK for 10 yrs. Now he wants to see it through due to Brad. Cal seems to thrive in this environment. so who knows what he'll do. I don't think he knows either.

Why would they quit or retire if it wasnt age-based or health-based?
Recruiting scandals?? Slick Rick Pitino? Dave Bliss stuff. Or MSU gymnastics/ type stuff that ensnares Izzo....Dean/Roy looking the other way as Rashad McCants goes from probation to Dean's list overnight??

There is too much $$ involved now. Nobody and I mean nobody is immune.

Ah, I was thinking most of them got fired, not retired. I always take retired as being a voluntary thing.

not all would vote for him...

If it meant him not being the coach at Kentucky anymore, you’d be at the poll early, taking a selfie with your “I voted” sticker.

Kidding aside, you’re right. He’d run as a democrat and that would make a lot of heads explode.

The coach with 25% of the NBA, and one little title? Mack will own his azz after this year. Winking

Dream on, Blockhead. U6 is going to have their hands full with the FBI fallout.
Add to that.... next year's game is at Rupp. Gonna be worse than a 13-point beating.

Would take someone to have something financial lined up like a broadcasting deal to happen. Too much money involved and to 95% of these guys coaching is their life. You’d have to know the inner workings of those guys. Weird thread is weird

It really is crazy. In the grand scheme of things this could make or break CBB. My guess is that within the next 5 years, UK, Duke, UNC, and Syracuse, all will have to replace their legends. It’s not easy to do that and that’s been proven time and time again. It will be interesting to see where CBB stands as whole after say, 10 years, when these powerhouse programs (and Syracuse with Jim) have hired replacements.

Kentucky has eight titles won by five coaches.

Name another school that has done that.

Good luck.

Congratulations on your unnecessary boasting that means absolutely nothing in relation to what my post was supposed to be about. The next wave of GOATS still remain to be seen. Which is why it will be interesting to see where CBB stands 5 or so years after these guys retire. Every school makes bad hires. Yours did prior to Cal. That was my point. If these schools dont make homerun hires then CBB will take a major drop off as it already is slightly declining.

Okay, I unnecessarily boasted and apparently I had no idea what the hell you posted was about. My point was that I fully expect the next UK coach to win an NCAA title.

But Cal is not a Kentucky legend. In fact Rupp is the only legend for Kentucky. Hall, Pitino, Smith and Cal were just icing on the cake. In fact Rupp is such a legend that no other coach has gotten near his winning percentages.

Five UK coaches have won a title. UNC has three, NC State has two, IU has two, Duke has one, UCLA has two, Kansas has, what, three? Louisville has one, Florida one, Maryland one, et.al. That was my point. I have no **%$ing what your point was as you said I missed it. Sorry.

My point was that with the sport already declining, these next hires for the bluebloods are critical to keep it alive. Attendance is dropping nationally. Expectations are getting higher and higher. There's going to be a dropoff when these guys pack it up and the big schools. The question is how much? There's no one out there even remotely close to the achievements and prominence that these coaches have gained over their tenures.

And with them all potentially hanging it up around the same time, it's a scary thought and a big topic for CBB. It's critical that these schools succeed.

With anything in life, there's a chance that things fade when mass changes are made. Hopefully it doesn't happen, which makes me wonder where CBB is at in 10 years or so when all of these programs are rebuilding after losing their HOF's. Part of that is because of the history and what the fans expect. Everyone wants instant gratification these days, which could lead to trouble for the sport if that isn't the case for these schools.

F.e. when Duke replaces K, people dont want to wait for success. They'll want the coach to come in and instantly succeed....even though no current coach, that would take the job, even comes close to his achievements.

If there were message boards back in the 60s, some random guy would have posted this same thing.

I would say so. It's just hard to see how coaches will end up being on the K, Self, Cal, Boeheim, Izzo, Williams level. Most of that is because you don't know who they will be because we can't see the future. I've grown up following all of these greats, so it's a bit tricky seeing CBB without them. It will likely still be great without them, but not really knowing who will step in their place is scary, but intriguing.

You should include Pitino in your list.

I forgot about him. I guess I should because the jury is still out on Mack. Love what he's doing with what should easily be his least talented team here.
Pitino players. What will he be able to do with his own players is to be determined.

Still easily the least talented. Only 5 players on the current team were his HS recruits. #237 McMahon #24 King (bust) #27 Williams, #72 Perry, and #88 Nwora.

But I think it's incredible what Mack has done with Pitino's players and only helps prove his worth since him and Pitino have 2 completely different systems on both offense and defense. Hopefully.

I say, Bob Huggins.

He seems to just be tired of the whole coaching thing. He said, " Our philosophy is to guard people, but this team is making a liar out of me". I don't think that had anything to do with the Tennessee game. I think he is just tired of it.

Who do you think calls it quits?

He won't ever quit. He will die coaching.

...not only the jury, but the FBI fallout is looming too. That's why he demanded a 7-year deal.
