The Olympics thread

A lot of emotion from NBA superstars in the 4th quarter. Clamped down on defense. Took advantage of outlook passes and fast break opportunities. Exploited mismatches (Durant waving off the Embiid screen in the final minute made me laugh). Outscored Serbia 32-15 in the 4th Quarter. Impressive stuff.

Did Embiid ever know what traveling is or did the NBA just suck it out of him? He was finally calle the fifth time and he freaks.

I kinda hope Serbia wins this game.

She crushed it! And she crushed Femke Bol's spirits, too! They were about even at hurdle #7. Bol was spent trying to keep even with her. 1.5 seconds over the field is ENORMOUS. I think McLaughlin is good enough to challenge for a gold in open 400 meters. Would love to see her double in the future.
Fastest I ran the 400m in HS was 52 flat. She's 2 seconds better and had to jump over hurdles to do it. 😂

52 is really solid, though.

You can make the argument that McLaughlin is the most dominant sprinter ever, ahead of even Usain Bolt and Michael Johnson, if you just consider the margins of victory. McLaughlin won by 1.5 seconds. Bolt's biggest win was .66 in the 200 meters, so that would extrapolate to 1.32 seconds over a quarter. Crazy dominant.

She's a beast. It's pretty insane. She doesn't even seem to get tired, rather she closes stronger while everyone else struggles to finish. I have never seen anyone, man or woman, make it look so effortless. That kind of endurance is mind-boggling. I was watching her after she won the 400 hurdles and she wasn't even breathing hard immediately after the race, while the silver medalist was laid out on the track sucking air. I never did hurdles but watched during meets and always in the 300m hurdles (high school doesn't have 400m hurdles) most people were so spent by the end they could barely even jump over the last few.

An incredible talent. And it really does look so effortless.

Really hope Kersee starts letting her do the 400 double. She's more than capable of winning both the 400 & the 400H, IMO.

100 Meters in the 1936 Olympics. The juxtaposition between Jesse Owens and the adjacent runner is hilarious. Owens has ZERO wasted movement. The guy next to Owens is all over the place. Owens' ability to economize his energy is actually quite impressive; his form doesn't fade at all. He clocked 10.3. Get him on a modern track and I bet he runs comfortably under 10.

the craziest stat of the night was when the announcer said that McLaughlin's best time in the 400 hurdles was faster than the other 8 competitor's fastest time in the 400 meter NON-HURDLE.

So basically she could've won that race if she was doing hurdles and the other 8 athletes were just running a straight 400. That's insane.

There have been some thrilling, wild finishes in track thus far. These have been my top 4 moments. Still plenty of events left to go.

#1 Cole Hocker, 1500 meters

#2 Quincy Hall, 400 meters

#3 Kenneth Rooks, Steeplechase

#4 Armand Duplantis, Pole Vault

agree on all 4, all amazing to watch. The Quincy Hall race was unbelievable, the announcer even pointed out that he looked completely gassed when he made the final turn and then he comes out of nowhere to blow by everyone.

Rooks coming second in the steeple vs all those heavy hitters was awesome, but the best part of that race was the Ethiopian doing a total face plant coming over one of the jumps. He had to be carted off the field.

Hocker was great. The two heavy favorites were so focused on each other they forgot about the two americans lurking in the mix. And apparently Hocker has the best kick of the bunch and he showed why he has that rep.

Why the **** does Duplantis compete for Sweden? I read his wiki and it sounds like he only committed to Sweden because they gave his dad a job. Didn't realize Cal was in charge of Sweden track and field. TO me that seems like a real poor reason to turn on your country. Also have to wonder, as big of a star as he is, how much bigger would he be if he was doing all that for the USA? I wonder how much money he's lost out on by turning his back on USA. Dumb decision, hope his daddy liked the job he had.

That was one of the best basketball games I've seen in a long time. Lebron, Steph, Embiid and KD really clamped down in the 4th quarter and took over. Down 17 against a really good Serbia team. Might I add, these international squads are night and day better than they were in the past. It's not even close. Huge win for America. People wanting Serbia to win are communists. A wins a win, and Lebron Is Captain LeAmerica. Dude is 40 playing at an insanely high level. It's pretty incredible to watch. Like Larry Bird said.. Enjoy watching him while you still can, because we might not see anything like it ever again.

The defense in the 4th was a beautiful thing to witness. Incredible if I'm being honest.

I am sure "America's Black Streak, Jesse Owens" would go over well today, as would a cameo appearance by Hitler and the Nazi salute on the podium. 1936 was wild. 😂

Yep. I was saying the same thing. It was surprising because it looked like he was struggling just 200 meters into the race - it was also surprising because he looked so good in the semifinals. His form was fading; his facial expressions indicated he was in pain... he was reeling in 4th place. That was the stuff of legends. Coming from behind like that. Hall had to dig crazy deep for that gold medal.

Rooks coming second in the steeple vs all those heavy hitters was awesome, but the best part of that race was the Ethiopian doing a total face plant coming over one of the jumps. He had to be carted off the field.

A lot happened in the final 600 meters of that race. The Ethiopian that went down, Lamecha Girma, is also the world record holder. When he went down, I believe that assured Rooks of at least medaling. That was a nasty fall. Happens a lot, unfortunately, in the steeple when runners are too bunched together.

I think my favorite part of the race was when Rooks was getting ready to pass the lead runner from Ethiopia (not Girma), and he looked over at Rooks three times as to say, "Wait, who are you? This is the finals of the Olympics." I'm certain the Ethiopian was glancing at Rooks because he was actually shocked at what he was seeing; he had to do a double or triple take. The Vegas odds on him winning were around +15000. Dude just went for it and almost stole the whole show.

Hocker was great. The two heavy favorites were so focused on each other they forgot about the two americans lurking in the mix. And apparently Hocker has the best kick of the bunch and he showed why he has that rep.

Agreed. Ingebrigtsen was running on the very inside part of lane 1 coming off the final bend. Shortly after he starts coming down the home stretch, you'll notice he drifts all the way into lane 2. He knew Kerr was coming for him. He was trying to make Kerr run further and further out, to gain any possible advantage. But by doing so, he conceded the inside lane where Hocker completely took him by surprise. Such a fantastic, fantastic race. One of the best 1500 meter races ever.

Pretty much this. His dad was offered the job. His dad is actually American - and it's his mom that is Swedish. So, the Swedish Federation essentially had both of his parents at this point. The part I find crazy is, he wouldn't even do interviews in Swedish the first couple years he was competing for Sweden. He was embarrassed that his language skills weren't proficient enough. Probably a clear sign you're competing for the wrong country.

But yes, Sweden definitely got him through his dad. If left to his own volition, I'm sure he would have been competing for the U.S.

MJ is still the GOAT, IMO. But a 39/40-year-old LeBron is significantly better than a 39/40 year-old Jordan. What he's able to do at his age is extraordinary. When push comes to shove, he's still clearly one of the best players in the world.
Say what you may say but LeBron is an all around player. He can play the 2, 3, 4 and 5. He can hand out assist like a point guard, break down the basket like a power 5. He is a team player.

Against Serbia he had a triple double. What a performance.

One of the best that I have ever seen. He plays bigger than he is and he plays smaller than he is. What a basketball player.

Curry coming out of HS had only 1 offer from a D1 school, don't know if he was a 2 or 3 star recruit but I remember watching him in high school. No one saw this coming but it tells you if you put in the work positive results will happen.

Would’ve been nice to see what 39 year old MJ would’ve looked like if had the benefits of modern training that Lebron has. MJ sure didn’t have a million dollar cryo chamber in his house like Lebron does.

Sucks that I had to miss every USA BB game due to boycotting the Olympics.

Or if he didn't smoke a million cigars and start drinking heavily in his mid to late 30s. Look at MJs eyes now. They're practically yellow.

Lol yes, Jordan was so nice to kids/hotel staff/waiters and waitresses.

Lebron is a million times better human being than that dickhead.
lol like you have any clue how either of them are as human beings.

OMG MJ is a POS because he punched Steve Kerr in practice!!!

OMG LEbron is a saint because he built a school in Akron!!!

I've lived in Chicago for 54 years in the area where MJ lived and the Bulls practiced. Never heard anyone say a bad thing about MJ or how he treated people in the community. And regarding your first "point", i used to deliver at a place that MJ ordered from all the time. Never got to take his food to his house, but everyone who did raved about how nice he was and how big of a tip he would give.

I’ve heard quite the opposite about not tipping. Cheating on his wife, his gambling woes, and being an overall divkhead in general.

Idc because he’s 1a to LeBrons 1b and is one of the most exciting players to ever step foot on the court. Love MJ. And we don’t know either one. The track record speaks for itself though. Plus people love to hate on Lebron when it’s clear he’s not a bad guy and is one of the best players of all time.

Holy shit, you're almost as old as Bert.
