Smiths Grove is three miles from Barren County. Smiths Grove post office address is in three counties; Warren, Barren and Edmonson.
Buddy lives near volunteer fire department in Barren co. Few miles from the old Red Cross school.
My best friend went to Red Cross elementary. My second best friend is the magistrate for that district.
Linville is great but pretty damned rugged and the trails are not marked particularly well.
Another great hike in that area is Appalachian Trail thru Carver Gap, which is on the Tennessee NC line. You can park your car at a hostel and they will give you a ride back up the trail so you can straight line it. Some of the best views on the entire AT, other than Mt Rogers.

Just about everything I read pretty much echoes what you just typed. Will probably do Linville in few months, but we were concerned about crossing river. Acutally in Knoxville in right now and planning on doing 22 mile loop @ Big South Fork starting tomorrow instead. Kind of disappointed, but Big South Fork looks pretty good too.
I couldnt imagine hiking or backpacking anywhere in north Carolina right now. Scuba diving would be much more feasible.
We own but aren't high on a mountain. Sorry.
Had 10% chance of rain at Big South Fork Sunday. It rained for 6 hours straight. Have blisters on every toe. Ended up knocking out 25 miles in two days just to get out of rain. Good time though.
Would’ve gone back to Smokey’s or Red River Gorge if I did it over..
