It's another one of those rules that was set with good intent but without a thorough vetting of real world examples. Refs have to be able to consider intent when it comes to an ejection. Removing that piece sets the rule up for stupid execution. I get that it's hard to legislate intent but no one has ever said reffing was easy.
I'll trust the trained officials that watched an entire replay and my own eyes over your assessment. Unfortunate for McGee if he was aiming for TKR's stomach instead of his nuts, but maybe he should have tried to actually go around the screen instead of running through the screener.
