***Official B1G In-Season Thread***

Tough first road environment for our freshmen. They were O-fer and struggled with Marquette’s length and experience.
I was working so wasn’t paying real close attention. Didn’t realize Jones was still there.

Purdue took that Marquette peen like a champ.
Turns out Marquette is pretty good.

I think this is probably what some of us naysayers thought of Purdue being all season and Purdue fans thought of the Alabama game as what they'd be. They'll probably bounce around a bit between the two until an identity is formed.

For sure. Purdue is playing a really tough schedule. Going in, my goal in the following four games was 2-2, knowing 1-3 was possible and 3-1 would be tremendous:

#8 Alabama
@ #15 Marquette
@ #4 Auburn
#23 Texas A&M (Neutral)

Add NC State and then Ole Miss/BYU in San Diego and I expected 8-3 non-conference with 9-2 as hopeful.

We felt the loss of Daniel Jacobsen last night. He would have taken Berg and Burgess's minutes and is more mobile and more of a rim protector than both.

Even then, we gave up 76 points to an explosive Marquette team and 16 of those points were on pick 6 runouts. The halfcourt defense was good enough to win. Just needed to not turn the ball over and hit more of the good looks we had and it would have been a close game.
Disappointed but not discouraged.

FYI
Michigan State is shooting exceptionally well from beyond the arc, making 23 of its 104 three-point attempts this season.🤮

I know people will say Jacobsen is only a freshman how much could he have helped but he would’ve helped out tremendously last night. Obviously he’s super skinny and would/will struggle against bigger guys like a Ballo but he’s far and away the best rim protector. Losing him was huge.

It is worth noting that Marquette didn't shoot the ball particularly well from three last night, going 8 for 26, many of which were uncontested.

They aren't a great shooting team. They shot to their average. The Ben Gold threes were critical. He'd been shooting 21% from three and hit his first 2 and 3 of his first 4. That changed we way we had to defend the 5 and we didn't have the defenders to contain the dribble penetration.

We were also asking a true freshman to check an All-American and I knew that was going to be difficult. Jones is really good.

I wasn’t paying super close attention but I wasn’t impressed with the giant ginger.

Helpside defense is non-negotiable
Proper defensive footwork is non-negotiable
Blocking out is non-negotiable

That is all.
