****Official B1G In-Season Thread****

I’m pretty sure most Purdue fans care about the Dance. To suggest otherwise is pretty clownish. OTOH I also think a league title is something the players and coaches should be proud of…especially when you win outright and potentially by 3 games. Apparently the other “Big Time” programs hold a similar level of respect for a league title. The BTT I give two shits about unless my team needs a couple of wins or needs to win it.
Lol. Yeah, not really. Ask Kansas fans how much they care about the conference title. I work with multiple. They are happy they win the title, but it's not a big deal to them. But you OTOH, we all get why you all pound your chests at conference titles....

If we win 17 conference titles in 20 years, I'm guessing it will become pedestrian to us as well.

Im in the camp of not giving two shits about the conference tournament. IU was gassed last year playing st marys.
I mean, I’m not sure how you could simply not care as a fan - it’s actually a really fun event, and we all want to win every time our team steps out there. We’re pretty excited to go this year.

However, I’ll agree that I don’t think it benefits our teams for the Big Dance. We need to have the championship game on Saturday, but they’ll never give up that pre-Selection Show ratings gold on Sunday.

Come the **** on. We play in the Big Ten, and we ALL want a conference championship at the end of those 20 games. It’s not an either/or with NCAAT success, they’re separate accomplishments.

I want to win every game my team plays. But winning a conference title isnt something I think of at the beginning of the year. I’m thinking “Is this a tournament team? Can it make the S16? Do we have a shot at a F4?” Conference titles are great to win along the way, and if it happens I’ll celebrate it. But my eyes are always on postseason success. Because that is all that anyone remembers outside of our little B10 bubble.

From my view no one remembers much beyond the Champion …barely. Sweet 16?- name em for the past 10 years. Hell FF is the same. Nobody remembers anything. Who won the Super Bowl in 1983? The only reason it ever is a thing is when you look at history. When you look at history Purdue has won 25 league titles- 3 more than anyone else…of course I think that’s worthy to note. To say otherwise is silly.

When I say remember, I’m meaning what do recruits remember? What does the national media remember? They remember the tournament from last year. The media remembers it and cover your team differently. The media covers your team differently and then recruits notice. 25 years ago, recruiting was more regional. But now that recruiting is becoming more national (or even global) each team is getting kids from outside of the big ten footprint. The recruit from Texas doesn’t care about Big Ten titles.

To each his own. I want to make the Sweet Sixteen BECAUSE it’s become a “thing” that we’ve been pretty damn successful lately but haven’t. However, I used to think of the NCAAs as kind of the Final Four and before that you just lost short of it.

I’m not sure I really felt better after our 2004 Illini lost in the Sweet Sixteen than when our 2003 Illini lost in the Second Round. And a conference title is getting to hang a banner that will be in the rafters forever, coming out on top of a brutal 20-game slog, and I personally think it’s really impressive. Would I have taken a single Sweet Sixteen over back-to-back Big Ten champs this year? Of course … but that’s because we won the Big Ten last year. Perfectly fair that it’ll be different for each fan depending on what your program’s recent experience is, I guess.

Ask @IUfanBorden how he feels considering what a big deal he makes of Iowa not winning a regular season conference championship. Apparently it is still important to him.........;)

Doesn’t seem to be the case with recruits - Alabama has no stature. Houston? Nope. Outside Kentucky and Duke history doesn’t seem to be what the top recruits are looking for. NIL has changed the landscape even more. Outside of CBB nerds nobody knows who won the tourney 7 years ago. Just assume it was Duke, Kansas or NC. As a fan I have a knowledge of Big Ten history and winning 25 league titles is something I’m happy that my team has achieved. I don’t expect anyone else to know or care but I do. What Kansas has done is incredible. As a fan of CBB that is noteworthy. I give two shits what Dickie V or some rando message board poster thinks about it.

If you actually knew that get some help 😂

I really hate agreeing with you. No, really lol. Conf titles are used as seasonal goals if it's a competitive team. It's one of several yearly goals, They have always been important and if a coach is worth a shit they will always be important.

I never insinuated it was an either or. What I suggested is that some put way more weight on a conference championship than others largely because they haven't had success in the NCAA Tournament.

Exactly this.

And how many of those were won before WWII? Again, another noteworthy point. To say otherwise is silly.

Not surprised.....Apparently IU is applying for a medical waiver. Must feel confident by going this route. To be eliigble injury must have occurred in first half of season, and you cannot have played in 30% of your teams games...

Injury did happen in first half.....Xavier has played in 11 games.

So I dunno. IU will play game 31 today......Then have a minimum of 2 games left(33). I believe IU would need to reach 36 games for him to fall at/under the 30%.
