****Official B1G In-Season Thread****

After such a heartbreak against the Zags, that one was sweet. I’m going to try to not get too high on this team, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised thus far, mostly with Sissoko.
Where the hell was this guy last year?

Dude must’ve been living in the gym this off-season

Solid night for the conference.

MSU beats #4 Kentucky.

Northwestern wins by double digits on a projected coin flip game at Georgetown.

Purdue right about on the spread in beating a pesky Marquette team.

Braden Smith is going to be a problem in this league for four years. Have fun, everyone.

He’ll have his ups and downs but Braden Smith really changes the potential of this year’s team and teams in the future IMO. Painter hasn’t had a true PG that can score like this.

Didn’t know what to expect of David Jenkins but he’s been excellent in his role so far. Can handle the ball & knocking down shots, stage doesn’t seem too big for him.

Need more production from the 4 spot, way too talented not to get more from that position.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

With all due respect we repaid that favor by running you out of our gym in the rematch. We were up 23 with 6 minutes left. Congrats for cutting it to 12 at the buzzer.

"All the credit in the world to them. That was something my team hasn’t seen in a long, long time. And that was absolutely get punched in the face. They deserve all the credit,” Underwood told reporters after the game."

We played poorly against Depaul. No question. We sure as s--t weren't a "bottom feeder" last year. Sorry.
So, we split and we had a better record, a conference championship and a better Tournament result? 🙃

(Props to the RAC, though, and I like Rutgers.)

Someone on the homoboard posted this, and it makes me have hope in the NIL era. Obviously a small sample size.

"It's amazing what $800k can buy

B. Smith vs. Marquette - 4/6 FG, 3/4 3pt, 5/6 FT, 2 reb, 3 asst, 2 TO, 20 pts
N. Pack vs Florida A&M - 1/6 FG, 0/3 3pt, 2/3 FT, 1 reb, 4 asst, 1 TO, 4 pts"

A top 25 team is brutal? Kansas potentially after that. I never worry about our non con schedule. It's not MSU crazy, but it's never Iowa lame.
They won’t be too 25 anymore because they lost at UNLV last night, but they’re still good. It’s far from a sure win for UW

Didn't see that. Still better than a 300+ cream puff. If we shoot like last night we won't win anyways.

He’s always been yoked, but a bit of a foul machine.

It’s been discussed a bit by the coaches that a huge amount of time in practice was spent with him teaching defending without fouling. They would assign a coach to watch him the entire scrimmages, and blow a whistle anytime he did. He seems to have really reigned that in, and just figured out how to be in better defensive position. And when he’s gotten beat, which hasn’t been frequent, he’s not committing any dumb, pointless fouls. While Bingham was a better shot blocker for sure, so far I’ve been more impressed with Sissoko. I think his thickness helps a lot.

Mady isn’t a great low post 1 on 1 guy, and he isn’t a shooter, but in NBA lingo, he seems to have figured out how to be an effective “run, jump, and dunk” center at both ends. We’ll see if that holds, I wouldn’t expect him to be a 16/8 guy nightly.

I meant it in a way that was more so focused on hooping in the gym not lifting lol.

The not fouling part in practice is definitely paying off. And while he has had 4 or 5 fouls both games against Gonzaga and Kentucky, those are against the the top 2 contenders for NPOY this year. While he may get in foul trouble in other games, it’ll be nothing like the last 2 years. The dude was almost unplayable due to that alone.

I’m not expecting 16/8 but 11/7 or 12/8 don’t look out of the picture. Which is right around where a guy like Cliff Omoruyi finished last year for Rutgers.

That’s a huge huge jump for a guy who played 5 minutes a game last year.

To add to that, even the dudes jumper looks much confident and fluid. Only 3 games in, 63% from the FT line compared to ~43%. Hell every time he took a turnaround jumper it was on line last night and I was expecting it to go in.

Props to Sissoko and the coaching staff for the work put in. If there was a most improved player award in the conference, he’d be the frontrunner right now

I think most of the fanbase agreed his development was the x factor to this offseason. We’ve been better so far than I expected because he’s been better. I completely agree.

I haven’t been able to catch an Illinois this year, and unfortunately I won’t be able to watch you guys against UCLA (I’m going to MSU/Nova) but I was really looking forward to that one. If any team is going break the title streak this, just roster wise I think it’s you guys. Switchable, athletic defenders make the machine go in CBB, you have those in Spades. Rodgers is going to be a big what if for us for years.

Him playing this way, as well as Malik Hall looking really good, certainly raises Michigan State’s ceiling a whole bunch. Glad we have a team who has already shit all over the narrative that the B1G is “way down”.

If you haven’t caught our games yet, you haven’t exactly missed out on something worth watching. The teams were absolute garbage and not worth taking anything away from. Glad we have the UCLA and Baylor/Virginia matchups early this year. Should be a good barometer on exactly where we stand.

As for us being the ones who could break thru. I’m gonna firmly disagree, and in a good way. Because I think a handful of teams could break the streak this year. Not because they are way better than last year or the years prior, but more so there just aren’t a bunch of dominant teams at the top. UNC at #1 is struggling with bottom feeders, Gonzaga and UK just proved they are really vulnerable in your matchups. Duke and Kansas both looked awful last night and they were #6 and #7. The only team at the top I’d be real worried about a matchup with is Houston…

Goddamn didn’t realize Braden Smith had 20 last night. Not that I didn’t believe the Purdue guys for being high on him, but that’s insane. What a way to introduce yourself in your first P6 matchup as a 3 star.
Lot to like about his game. Doesn’t play like a freshman.

I know, right....I have a HS game Saturday at Ind. North Central. On my EventLink it said:

Game time; 7;30
Place: North Central
Opponent: Iowa...

🤣

Am I totally misremembering or has North Central not had a stud bball player for awhile? At least one that went P5? I’m thinking the last one was Ronnie Johnson. When I was in high school in Indy they’d pump out P5 talent on the regular it seemed like.

It seems like it has been a while. Seems talent is more spread abut, now.

I have Cathedral on the 26th, @ Jeffersonville. Looking forward to that.
