Ok, since we pretty much have some combination or K, Wooden, Rupp, Dean, Naismith, Allen, Knight, Calhoun on the main mountain, who would be the next four coaches on the smaller mountain? This list can include active and deceased coaches as well.

Self will be there soon. They both have one title apiece. That won't cut it to get into this group.
Self is in the HOF. I agree that Cal and Self both need another title to be in the same group as others mentioned ITT. Self could use some more Final Fours too.

Yeah ole Huck would be the leader of that mountain. Prolly add Jay Wright, Pitino
I wouldn't put Jay Wright ahead of Cal or Self. He's had a pretty remarkable 5 year stretch but his overall year to year on average resume does not compare to either one of them.

Ehhh....he was cleared just like Calipari, but he still has that stain.

Roy Williams is UNC's version of Calipari.

Nah, not really. There really isn't any comparison to him and Cal either, though I have no issue not holding any of that against Calipari. I'm sure he does to a bunch of you guys but in the grand scheme of things you are pretty irrelevant just like me.

Holding anything against Roy would be like holding situations against K that never amounted to anything. You can't really punish people for not getting in trouble. It makes no sense.

Roy Williams should be mentioned ahead of Knight and Calhoun, IMO. You could make the argument that he's a top 5 coach of all time if you're going off of results.

I mean they all have 3 titles, but I wouldn't put Roy ahead of them, but that's just me.

People always get this wrong. Mt. Rushmore wasn't about the top 4 Presidents at that time. All contenders, yes, but they were going for some semblance of party representation, and then Teddy got in b/c he was all about some parks.

So if we truly want to emulate Mt. Rushmore, we have to throw in someone who would have been a runner-up but got in for agenda-driven reasons, like Nolan Richardson, so it isn't just white guys.

John Thompson and Big House Gaines will duke it out with Nolan

Sure but he has been to twice as many Final Fours as either of them and his overall record (regular season and NCAA) is way more impressive. Those are things to consider here. Also he only had 1 eligible team miss the NCAA tournament. Knight and Calhoun missed it pretty regularly. That's crazy good consistency.

Edit to say Knight didn't necessarily miss the tournament regularly but he did go more times than Roy. Also, a lot of Knight's teams weren't highly seeded whereas Roy almost always coached a team that had a chance to go deep.

Roy did have the benefit of coaching at two elite bluebloods and some could argue he should have won more. Knight and Calhoun certainly made use of their limited Final Four appearances.

25 posts in, who's on the second rock?
Lemme rank the coaches first.

1) Phog
2) Wooden
3) K
4) Rupp
5) Naismith
6) Roy
7) Dean
8) Knight
9) Self
10) Calipari

It's amazing that Kansas has ties to 7 of the top 10 coaches of all time.

I guess Calhoun will be the leader of the 2nd mountain because my first mountain is listed above.

If it's titles you're talking about then Roy over Dean. I wouldn't remove Calhoun. Look at UConn since he left. Wright's creeping his way from the small mountain to the main.

Would you have him up there, though? I don’t think I would. One title in 30+ years, and it took Carmelo to do it.

I guess the longevity, most consecutive years with 20+ wins or some record he has. Would have been the first one with 1,000 wins at one school if not for the NCAA sanctions. I'm not going to fight anyone if they omit him tho, just thought his name would have floated about much sooner.

That's interesting. Most UNC fans will never place Roy above Dean, but Roy is creeping up on Dean. Should pass him in wins in 2 years (Roy currently has 842). Needs 37 to tie. Also needs two more FF to tie him as well. This will certainly be an interesting debate.

Yeah and I'm not knocking Dean at all. But I don't see removing Calhoun, even though his teams were a thorn in our side 2 times. What he did at a non blue blood should get him some credit imo.
