16 blocks last night. I haven't seen that many rejections since my days at the bar. Just St Louis who I know lost their top player to injury. And it's St Louis either way.

Might Penny be putting together a monster this year?

They have a few tricky games upcoming but looking forward to mid Dec they get Bama and Tenn.

It's early in the year and they're relatively untested. With that said, they may be the best team in college basketball.

PG play is suspect. Not knocking (pretty much the only knock), and its early and have a chance to be really good. Bates is better than I thought. Most are after watching them play being I don't get to high on them to begin with.

Haven't seen them play. Does Bates pass it, drive/kick, etc? What's his game?

Gotta have a PG no doubt if that's an issue that would be their undoing I guess?

Kind of a do it all. Point forward who can shoot.

I saw at least 3 of threes yesterday. I haven't looked at the box score, but I think Duran has something 6 or so blocks.

Point forward style for him could maybe hide a lack of impact PG if that's their situation. He's a next level guy I hear. Looking forward to the games vs upper tier SEC to see how they stack up.

They are set up for a very high seed. Their only ranked teams are Bama, Tennessee, and of course Houston. Houston should be fun.

Larry's gonna take them places. Penny's just along for the ride.
Lol except penny is the one getting the studs there to give brown the opportunity to “take them places”.

Brown didnt exactly “take smu places” in his last college coaching gig from 2012-2016.

Def not gonna argue that hes not a helluva coach with a helluva resume, and a much better and more experienced coach than penny. But penny is the one bringing the studs, not larry brown.

Defense is absolute fire. Trying to find space against this team? Good luck.

Their struggles with Penny have come on the offensive end. But, they've shot the ball really well to start the season. If they can maintain decent/good shooting percentages, they will be extremely dangerous in March.

Actually, Brown did take them places. He turned a perennial loser into a solid team in year 2 and had them in the tourney in year 3.

Now he's working with a roster with legit talent.

As for Penny, he's always had talent and done nothing with it. Hell, even Pastner did more.

Pennys only coached what 2-3 years total at memphis. And one year was the Wiseman debacle.

i know larry browns resume is extensive, but again i dont call making the ncaaT at SMU taking a team places, regardless if their a perennial loser, they arent some low budget tiny mid major with no budget or nothing to work with, they are in one of the top group of five leagues whose churched out multiple champs and FF teams. Why didnt he bring legit talent to smu for him to work with so he could take them places beyond the round of 64, when he was the head coach. I mean head coach for 4 years and one ncaaT? Then he went and coached in italy? Why didnt he stay at smu and negotiate a raise with all that success???

Larry brown hasnt won anything significant since he was at Kansas, unless u count the ECF with iverson and philly. Again not saying he cant coach, just think his career is a bit overratted imho. But again i know hes not some bum of a coach either.

Regardless not a hill i wanna die on

Brown probably would have had 2 NCAAT appearances if Emmanuel Mudiay didn't bail out for overseas during the summer. Dude was flakey though. I remember UK and a couple other teams backed off pretty much all at once and that's why he chose SMU in the first place. It worked out for us b/c we moved on to Tyler Ulis.

SMU had two winning seasons in 10 years before Brown. 13-19 the year before. They'd been to the tourney 10 times in their history. I don't think it makes sense to judge success at a midmajor by tourney appearances. We all know that deserving midmajors are left out every year. His second year they almost won the NIT. That was a pretty solid team that might have deserved to be in. His third year they got in and that was his last full season. Not sure what you would expect a good coach to accomplish in a couple years at that place.

As for being overrated, I don't know what you base that on. It's not like he's ranked with Wooden or Bobby Knight. But in terms of coaching ability, he's probably among the best. Only coach to win an NCAA title and NBA title.
