Game 1 of the day was some 16u action in the back gym. The pairing was Mac Irvin Fire (IL) vs. Expressions (MA).
The matchup that got me in the gym early was 6’7 ‘23 Rivals150 No. 4 JJ 6’9 ‘23 Rivals150 No. 26 Taylor Bowen of Expressions. You love these head to head matchups because it gives you a good feel of where the two are, face to face, going at one another, we will get back to this matchup in a minute.
It was 6’7 ‘23 Rivals150 No. 71 Gavin Griffiths who stole the show as he completely took over the game as he finished with 26 points on seven made 3s. It was an overall performance as he played with incredible balance and toughness. He hunted his shot in transition, he created space in the half-court, he attacked closeouts and finished at the basket. Maryland, Rutgers, and Syracuse are the only P5 offers right now. That will change, as he will also be in the conversation for a rankings bump.
back to Bowen vs Taylor … Bowen caused all type of trouble for Taylor, especially on the defensive end where he made things difficult for Taylor to get to his spots in the half court. Taylor was still able to go 3-6 from 3 and he grabbed 5 rebounds. Bowen found the majority of his offense in transition. His ability to change ends and get to top speed is possibly his greatest trait, along with his ability to move and get into the passing lanes. Bowen finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds to go along with the defensive performance.
**this and that
Jahmari Hamilton-Brown made a ton of hustle plays, all over the floor for Expressions
