- 2023: former D2 head coach defeats #1 Purdue
- 2018: former D2 head coach defeats #1 Virginia

Doesn’t matter what level of basketball, these coaches can coach! Perhaps more mid majors and small majors should hire D2 head coaches instead of assistant coaches? Makes sense they’d translate better to these jobs because they know how to win with less resources (and talent). What say you?

I like it. The next HC of Texas Tech should be.....the 4 straight DII national champion Ben McCollum of Northwest Missouri State COME ON DOWN!

The local D1 school in Kansas City (UMKC) has had at least three head coach openings since we’ve lived here. McCollum should’ve been their guy for every one of them (maybe not the last one, Marvin Menzies is a decent pickup for a small major). I have no doubt he’d have success anywhere at the D1 level, whether it be there or in Lubbock.

It has to be just a matter of time before he jumps to D1 and probably a P6 team.

The similarity is that they both beat vulnerable top seeds that had rich history of choking in March, so apparently for an upset of this magnitude to happen you need a weak top seed with a choke artist head coach on the sideline. A very good top seed will not lose to 16 seed no matter what.

The difference though, is that UMBC was a much better team. They blew our UVA by 20pts, it’s just the better team won, I seriously believe they could beat UVA in a best of 7 series. FDU ain’t that good though, they’d not stand a chance against UMBC, and if they play a series against Purdue, I’d say Purdue in 5.

Agreed on your second point. In fact, FDU shouldn’t have even been in the tournament; Merrimack, the NEC tournament champion, was ineligible do to transiting from D2.
