Does 23-25 verses ranked teams really deserve a lifetime contract?…

Wayne Keon Turner (born March 22, 1976) is a retired American professional basketball player. He played high school basketball at Beaver Country Day School in Brookline, Massachusetts. As a star point guard for the Kentucky Wildcats during a four-year period in which they won two national titles (1996 and 1998) and lost in the championship game once (1997). He set the NCAA record for games played with 151 games in his four-year Kentucky Wildcats career.

How many titles does Christian Laettner have? The same as Turner, plus Turner has an additional final game appearance.

I will take Turner.

Post Script: Auburn ain’t in the friggin’ running on any thing basketball. They are losers of the first order.

lol you're taking a 7 points per game career average guy over someone who was a 2x All-American, NPOY, and most likely the most productive Duke player of all time? That's a gigantic homer take.

Laettner played in 4 Final Fours, and 3 National Title Games. Turner didn't even play in the title game against Syracuse.

Also, Darius Miller recently surpassed Turner for the most played games in UK history. And several others have passed him on the all-time list.

And replace him with who?

Bill Self isn't leaving KU
Mark Few? Cal has been to many more FF's than Mark

The top 5 coaches in the game (K is retiring) is Self, Wright, Cal, Few, Bennett

You want mark few or tony bennett?

Does Jay Wright give you more than Cal? Do you bank on young unproven coaches?

They can have Hubert Davis.

Oh please like any coach woukd willingly leave UK to go to ice box minnestoa in basketballs.

The writing was on the wall, tubby just saved the AD from having to fire a former natty winner.

And dont get me wrong, tunbys career trajectory since then proved it was the right call. But regardless tubby wasnt gonna be coaching UK any longer, minn job or not. I mean again what basketball coach woukd leave arguably the best program of all time to go to effin minnesota:

Tubby not officially being fired is semantics imo
Of course it's semantics, it's also facts. Tubby Smith was not fired by Kentucky.

This story isn't exactly parallel, but it's hard to not to chuckle when I consider how Wooden almost became the head coach at Minnesota. Here's an excerpt from the LA Times:

In 1948, John Wooden, then at Indiana Teachers College (Indiana State), tentatively agreed to become the head coach at Minnesota, pending a formal offer he anticipated would come in a long-distance telephone conversation with the university’s athletic director.

Wooden waited. And waited.

When the phone finally rang, it was UCLA.

Impressed with the opportunity and thinking that perhaps Minnesota had reconsidered, he committed to move to Westwood.

Minutes later, the phone rang again. The Minnesota athletic director explained that he had been caught in a blizzard and couldn’t reach a telephone. Wooden informed him he was no longer available.
And after 15 mediocre seasons at UCLA Sam Gilbert entered the picture, otherwise most people wouldn't even recognize the name John Wooden today.

Look, they ran Tubby out of town and they were right to do so. They were declining rapidly and the dude is a good coach for the mid-major or football school, but the job became too big for him at Kentucky. He wasn't really adapting to the player culture of this era and wasn't good enough to overcome that, he would have had to have been great to do so, and he just wasn't.

Super good dude, the older he gets he could be a great asset as an assistant down the road somewhere, for sure.
He's already 70. I am pretty sure he'll end his career at High Point. There are no expectations there and he doesn't have to put in any recruiting effort (he never did anyway). Low major caliber players will show up to play for him based on name alone.

Here something else I just realized. Tubby and cal combined is basically pitino.

He seems like a AU type coach.
Pre pearl absolutely

U think its a coinicidence cal became the best recruiter of all time right after he met www.

and yea www is loyal to nike, but i havent seen him sitting behind the duke or syracuse bench, or their players hugging him in the stands after games 🤷‍♂️

Is it just a coincidence that Cal has still been the best recruiter of the past 10 years without any sightings of William Wesley in the same timespan? 🤔

Silly, K is the best recruiter and it happened about the time we stopped seeing WWW on the UK's bench in UK gear.

WWW is the key, man. Eyeroll

Has he though? K and duke have been out recruiting cal since……….about the time uk told www to make himself scarce.

Still doesnt answer the question on how he was a mediocre coach and recruiter until milt/dejuan wagner came along and introduced him to www. Then he started reelin in big fish to mid major memphis and became the best recruiter of all time. Why wasnt he doing that before milt/dejuan/www? Its not a coincidence.

Cal becoming a house hold name is directly tied to WWW. How much www did or didnt do of course i have no clue. I know before cal left memphis the insiders there thought they had john wall in the bag bc……….www accompanied him on his official visit to campus.

Its not like anyone got in trouble or even accused of anything by the ncaa. I just find it ironic whoever made the post about wooden having sam gilbert when cal had www delivering him studs as well. Not the same, i understand, but still ones success is tied to the other in both cases.

Plus cals recruiting prowess literally happened right after he got the wagners.

OK.

Yea that was a little harsh. Ill just say Cal became a hof coach moreso bc of his recruiting than his Xs and Os, and his recruiting didnt really take off until www was in the fold. So connect the dots however u want. Maybe www had 0 affect on cals recruiting , not like i was in the room with em.

You don't think his 750+ wins (76% win%), three 38 wins seasons (no one else has one) Countless conference titles/tourn champs, 3x Naismith COY, 6 Final fours, 2 Runner UPs, and NC had anything to do with him getting in.

It's all due "moreso" to his recruiting which he owes to WWW?

OK

No im saying he wouldnt have acconplished that without bringing in all the talented studs he did. And he wasnt bringing in the ridiculous classes before he met www. He wasnt rolling in five stars to memphis before the wagners. Then recruiting “magically” took off at memphis, cdr, dorsey, rose, etc etc. he wasnt bringing in that caliber of player before the wagners/www.

Hes never been known to coach up a less talented team to overachieve, in fact moreso the opposite. Even some uk fans bitch about his in game coaching, and underachieving with multiple nba draft picks on the roster.

Regardless this is an old convo weve had before, im not gonna change ur mind any quicker than ur gonna change mine. And again not like he was busted for anything illegal anyways.

Imo though its naive to think www didnt have a major hand in cals career success. If not why wasnt he killing it on the recruiting trail and in the tourney before www. One final four run at umass where he happened to have a top 2 pick in camby. What did he accomplish nationally besides that before he signed dejuan wagner?

I think it was time for him to move on at Kentucky but it just cracks me up that Kentucky now gives calipari a pass while they blasted tubby for the same results at the end
Dude, NO ONE is giving Cal a pass. He's earned the right to fix his mess, and we are giving him that opportunity. UK fans have been all over him the past 4 or 5 seasons. You know this.

The last few years Cal’s recruiting has slipped though.

So when is the end game for fixing it? I don’t believe you have a final 4 caliber squad this year either

I personally have given him this year and next. I wouldn't have included next year if we didn't have such a nice class coming in. Part of Cal falling out with UK fans a little is that we haven't been reeling in near as much talent as we used to. With three top ten guys coming in next year (depending on where you look) it has the potential to be a really good year. Shaedon Sharpe is supposedly the best freshman we will see wearing Kentucky blue since AD.

Not confident we get over that final four hump this year. Next year sets up better IMO. If Cal can't get out of his slump by then, I think the vast majority of Kentucky fans will have had enough.

Your class is stacked next year. Cal needs to sign better actual basketball players instead of just 5star athletes. Cal has signed to many as of late with pro typical nba bodies but so many of them can’t score or shoot. They are just long.

Yea, you won't find many people in our fanbase that disagree with that. It was honestly why many of us were optimistic going into this season. More basketball players and shooters instead of long athletes. Its been disappointing from a shooting standpoint outside of Kellan.
