Arkansas fans, get ready...

No, you really don't. You keep repeating recruiting rankings or NBA talent as the evaluation metric for what defines one team as “better” than another. It’s not. Nothing is. They are one of many factors and every time I point out another, you think that’s the argument.

The argument is, this is a different team than any you’ve ever had. Different players, coaches, Cal may be hungrier, may have changed philosophies, etc.. There are so many different reasons why one team succeeds where another fails. So many reasons why a coach succeeds in one place and fails in another. You have no idea. NBA talent is one of many factors. Stop using your idea of what’s “better” to define a team and players you know very little about. Does this make sense?
That's hilarious, this is a different team than any of the rosters Cal had at UK??? Arkansas literally has 3 guys that played big minutes for UK last year. Boogie Fland type players were a dime a dozen at UK and Davis is nothing but a poor mans Antonio Reeves.

Heck, this Arkansas team is a less talented version of what Cal just had. The difference is, you don't have a Dillingham, or a Sheppard. In fact, I can't tbink of any two teams that are any more similar. 😂

Different coaches? You literally have the head coach and three assistants that were at UK, holy shit, you couldn't be more wrong. Not only that, but Cal replaced John Welch with Brad Calipari (wow) and Orlando Antiqua with Kenny Payne, who was an assistant at UK for many years. You're really bad at this.

This is the 3rd time you've been caught throwing shit against the wall hoping it stuck.

And again, you started this shit, you called me out on page 1 for my opinions on this Arkansas roster, because they played well, at home, against a seriously depleted KU team and you're trying to act like you didn't.

This just confirms you have no idea what you're looking at.

You literally said the players and coaches are different, true or false?

The coaching staff came from UK, three of your best players, came from UK. There aren't two teams and coaching staffs more similar.

True

You asked, “so the coaches and players are different. True or false.”

I said true. They are different.
Yikes, proof that some people just can't be helped.

Poor guy, you have no clue what you're in for. I tried to help you, just remember to come back when ot happens.

Yikes, indeed. I’m really not sure what you don’t get. It’s not the same. Even if it were, experience would be another variable. You seem to not be able to process that there are different players and different coaches than last years Kentucky team. Different circumstances, different experience, and a world of things that separate this team from any team you’ve ever had. In fact there’s a top 3 recruiting class and the #1 transfer class worth of difference, specifically, but even if they were the exact same players, it still could be different. Even in its most basic comparison, you’re ignoring that a team can’t get better or players can’t get better, but they aren’t the same regardless. Why can’t you follow this?

I never said anything about not having some coaches and some players from Kentucky. That goes without saying.

I’m honestly not sure why you can’t understand this. This isn’t the same team and your metric for evaluating which team is “better” is just your subjective perception. This is pretty simple stuff.

So in your world, since Aidoo, Fland, Davis and Knox didn’t play on IlUK last year, that means it's not possible for the teams to he similar since the players aren't exactly the same.
And having the #1 transfer class means nothing, as Kevin said, it all comes down to what publication you read. UK had Mitchell and Antonio Reeves last year, I would put those two up against the entire transfer class you have at Arkansas. If Davis + Ado + DJ can average Reeves type numbers, you'll be lucky.
And this was never about players improving, this is another dumb point you just introduced. You're flailing away at this. Most players get better throughout the season, why is that a thing here?
I never said anything about not having some coaches and some players from Kentucky. That goes without saying.

The two teams are a lot more similar than your brain is allowing you to see.
Heck, most of the work is already done for you.

Head coach = same
Assistants: you have Brad and Payne, not good, big advantage UK. Welch and Antiqua are miles better.

You won't find two teams that are more similar, this is as close as you will ever see two teams get, jesus man, most of the players played for UK last year and what's even.more funny, your Ex UK coach, only knows 1 way to play.

The other point I'll make is UK 23/24 is deeper and has better top end talent.

Now, DJ, Thiero and Z will obviously be better than they were last year, but they weren't the ones that made UK what it was, Reed Sheppard, Dillingham, Reeves, Mitchell and Edwards were Cal's main guys. You could substitute DJ Wagner in there for Dilly or Edwards, but I wouldn't.

How anyone could say these two teams aren't very close to a mirror image, is beyond me, especially ehen both teams have literally the same players in several spots and the same coach. Hilarious.

I’m not saying they don’t have similarities. You keep attempting to reframe things I’ve said into what you think I’ve said.

I’ve never argued they don’t have similarities. He came from Kentucky and brought several players with him. No shit there are similarities. Smh.

Im saying, you can’t define this team by that team. Many of the players are different and the ones that aren’t have another year of experience from their freshmen years. Do you seriously not understand that many younger teams that struggle, turn around the next year and have success? Do you understand why? You keep trying to put players into a ranking system where everything is equal from year to year. It’s so naively idiotic, it’s hard to take you serious.
The other point I'll make is UK 23/24 is deeper and has better top end talent.
Just like this. You make these blanket statements that you think are based in reality and you have no idea what might make a team better. You have no idea, dude. Neither do I or anyone else, but you’re the only guy that is trying to define this team by last years UK team or some arbitrary ranking. It’s so stupid. I can’t even point out the absurdity by asking you to apply common sense by looking at the new guys, the transfers, or the added experience, the different coaches, cal’s determination, or any other factor that could change the team, because for some reason you define “top end talent” as the only evaluation metric that matters.

How do you not see how stupid this sounds? They aren’t the same team dude. You have no idea if this team will win the SEC, make the final four, or anything else. Your idea of talent makes zero difference.

It is hilarious, because you actually wrote in the same paragraph where your talking about mirror images that Sheppard, Dillingham, Reeves, Mitchell, and Edward’s were cal’s main guys and none of them are even on this team. How are you not getting this???? You just listed 5 guys as your main parts while arguing that they are the mirror image of a team made up of 5 entirely different main parts. I feel like I’m talking crazy pills.

I can’t argue with you anymore. You need some comprehension lessons.

I said Ivicic is better than Hunter? Given your history of twisting everything that's said, I'm going to need to see proof of that. I csll bullshit.

Been over this and I already proved that a long time ago.

As far as UK having studs, umm, define what you're calling a stud? Is there an Oscar, or Julius Randle? No, but in my opinion, a guy that shot 49% from 3 point range, is a stud. A DPOY center in any league, is a stud and 2 all Defensive guards, are studs.

Dickinson’s an AA and #4 on Bilas’s list of the best players nationally. If that’s not a “stud” then no Kentucky player is. Your logic, not mine.

Coaches like Calipari and Tom Crean, need lottery pick type studs, but when you run a legit offense with cutting and elite outside shooting, you don't need Anthony Davis to win games.

How many lottery picks were on SDSU and Florida Atlantic 2 years ago? How many lottery picks were on NC State last year?

If you'll notice, teams built with upperclassmen, usually fair better in the NCAAT than freshmen led teams.

Can't wait to see you twist my words again. And before you even try, I'm not saying UK is a FF team. They CAN get there, but it’s very unlikely and from what I've seen, KU isn’t a FF threat either.

I’m not the one who knocks players for not being on NBA draft boards, so you don’t need to lecture about this.

As for KU, half the rotation was out and Self wasn’t running any plays. I’m sure you’re eager for them to fail but burying the preseason #1 team in October is funny. Self said this team has potential to be one of his best. Unlike you, I'm not going to pretend to know how good everyone is before they've played a single regular season game.

Apparently players don't improve after their freshman year. Guess experience doesn't matter after all.

'22 KU was literally the exact same team as the year before + Remy Martin. One team lost by 30+ in the 2nd round and the other won it all. Carry on though. You're making great points.

Not only are some of the players the same, but the makeup of both teams is the same, the head ciach.is the same and after 1 game, you could see similarities between Fland and Dillingham.

Big Z played the same, Ado played the same and so did Wagner. Here's what you guys don't get, when Calipari is the coach, there is no consistency. Fland will play great one game and be meh for 3 games, same with DJ and definitely big Z.

You two stooges don't have to believe me, you'll see it for yourselves real soon.

But lets be honest here, you're only here because anything UK, blows your dress up and it pisses you off that a bunch of ex UK players punked KU the other night. We all know it, just admit it.

Lol. I'm pissed about losing an exhibition game because a few former Kentucky players are on the opponent's roster...so I came here to defend the opponent's honor and hype their roster. Brilliant. 😂

Notice that no one ever sides with you on this stuff? When people do chime in, it's to tell you your take sucks. A rational person might conclude something from that.

My example destroyed any point you thought you'd made, but carry on spewing nonsense that no one agrees with. Go, hamster, go!

Nope, I disagree with bad takes. You just happen to have a disproportionate number of the bad takes on this board. But yeah, the only two disagreeing with you are the two people engaging. Good observation. 😆

How many national analysts do you think would agree that Arkansas isn't very talented, or that freshmen have to be ranked in the top three to have a decent season under Calipari? How many would take Kentucky's roster over theirs? How many would agree that this team is the same as last year's Kentucky?

The answer to all of these would be zero. But sure. We only disagree because we have an agenda. Not Jeff though. He has no dog in this fight whatsoever. 🤣

FWIW, there’s a difference between “only coming around when your team wins” and not “crowing about shit you know nothing about.” You are the one that made the claims. Own it.

You made a lot of bold claims and it’s not other people’s fault for not making asinine claims they know nothing about. That’s why people look laughed at you and you still don’t get it. I still have no idea if Arkansas will be good, I never made that claim. I’m just the guy laughing at the other guy that pretends he knows shit because he got his feelings hurt.
Jeff has forgotten more about basketball than you have ever known.

Geeze.

“We” is “you” pal. Most of the Kentucky fans I’ve come across have wished him the best. You are emotionally invested and your sour grapes led to you making blanket definitive statements about this team that you have no clue about. You’re an arm chair fan trying to tell people that a hall of fame coach doesn’t know how to coach.

Does this make any sense to you? Just let it go. I couldn’t care less what Kentucky does, what our ex coaches do, and I would never claim that they can’t coach or don’t know what they’re doing. You’ve also made several comments about the players and freshmen that you have no idea about. Just move on.
No it is WE because I agreed with every damned thing he said.

From what I've seen, this KU team has a ton of potential.

But Self is going to do what he does and toy with the lineup early and take some losses. He's going to have to get the transfers to learn to play together and learn to play his system. But once the pieces are in place, he has his rotation, and the players have settled into their roles, then I think this team will be very good. Not 2020 good, but possibly 2022 level good.

Of course I do worry about Dickinson's foot. Is it going to hamper him all year? Would it be best to remove him from the lineup for a month and just let him heal and take some Ls?

Can’t find the Kentucky fan from Rupp rafters, perhaps he’s a poor, @Mike-McD if you’re out there, let me know if you want to discuss your impressive two HS wins.

This is what we have witnessed for 7 years now and it's gotten worse each year.

Cal has always been a weak in-game coach, but the last few years, it seems like he has also skimped on preparing for the team he's about to face.

It’s a dangerous combination though. Talent + Youth + wrong priorities + outdated offense + stall ball + hard headedness + laziness = massive inconsistency. No lead is safe, he goes to stall ball and pedestrian offense.

They’re going to look great 1 game, then 5 games in a row, they'll look average, then they'll win a game they were underdogs in, then they'll lose another head shaker.

Is what it is. 2009-2017 Cal ain’t walking through that door.

Not to squish this thread, but do you know that Pope’s BYU team went 19-15 just two seasons ago?

Who knows how well Pope will perform at UK...but I like the team he assembled when the cupboard was left completely bare. Also has not had any issues recruiting, based upon what he has put together in his 2025 class thus far. Would never get guys like this at BYU.

But he will have to produce, can't hide at UK, and he knows that better than anyone.

As for Cal, which is what this thread is about, he is not changing who he is. The guy is almost 70, surprised he hasn't retired. He has fallen off a cliff the past four years, and he ain't gettin' his fastball back.

I hold no ill will toward Cal, unlike the majority of UK fans. Hopefully the crowd will give him a standing ovation when he returns to Rupp this season, but unfortunately I don't envision that happening.

It’s BYU, what kind of skilled players are you going to get to go there?

Also, wasn’t that his first season there? Were his players that year the same quality he has on this team, or what he is recruiting? It’s not close.

But right now, I'll take just about anyone that coaches for UK and plays his best players. Pope does that and so far, Pope has done all the right things. We have to at least see how he does, right?
