with a title this year?
K puts Wooden in the rear view mirror for good? Roy creeps closer to K status? Cal and Self establish themselves as all-timers? Who makes the biggest leap with another one? Or maybe a first-timer like Bennett wins and begins to establish himself?

Unlikely, but I stopped doubting him- Nova makes a suprise run to the title- is Jay Wright than the second best coach in the game active behind K?

I would really say UNC- if they win it all again, tough to not put Roy up right next to K...

*cough* Mark Few *cough*

Speaking of K, IF Duke wins it all, he will have exactly 100 NCAA Tournament wins. Only Uk, UNC, KU, UCLA will have more wins than him in the NCAA Tournament.

Bennett gets his 1st, BUT, this happens only if a healthy Duke team has a colossal breakdown.

Beilein

I think he is the best coach in BB. A Natty would cement this.

I’ve grown to like Cal over the years. Watching him take Herro down a couple pegs
reinforced that but he does right by his players.
Likewise. But that could also be because I felt much more threatened by the recruiting when we were under the scandal umbrella. Now that Roy has proven he can win without the best talent, it's not so worrisome.

I feel like it would be a big change to any coach's legacy to win a national championship. Be it a guy that doesn't have one like Bennett or guy that has a few like Coach K or Roy Williams How would Coach K put wooden in the rear view mirror? It would be 6 for K vs 10 for Wooden, right?

That would be the only stat that Coach is behind Wooden in

60s vs present isn’t apples-apples.

Cal, Self, and Izzo all HOFers looking for their second title which separates the men from the boys. Great coaches like Few, Beilein, Bennett looking for their first.

When will Painter breakthrough? Roy Williams pushing for a top 5 CBB coach of all time.
I think you could argue Roy is already top 5 all time. He’s at the very least in the conversation.

K
Wooden
Rupp
Dean

He’s probably just behind those guys. A title would firmly put him at #3, IMO.

No one else mentioned in this thread has a historic loss and is known for coming up short in the tourney. A championship for Tony Bennett would radically change that perception
Bill Self is known for like 4 embarrassing losses and has had numerous teams come up short in the tournament.

Tony Bennett is a good pick for this topic though. He’s just as good as the other elites at this point, IMO. A title would put him in that class for good.

Imagine losing in the first round of the NIT. We were supposed to get home court, but iirc ky hs basketball took president so we played there. ....and lost.

On the bright side, we won the champion.....yeah nevermind, that game sucked.

I mean Kentucky being a NIT team at all is slightly embarrassing but it pales in comparison. You lost to an 8 seed in the NIT not a 16

Interesting debate. Would you rather lose to a 16 seed or lose in the first round of the NIT?

I’m literally the only person who can answer this and it’s lose in the 1st round of the NIT. Some seasons are just disappointments overall but there is no worse feeling than thinking you can win it all and losing in the first round to a 16 seed

IMO, no blueblood should ever be in the NIT and no 1-seed should ever lose (by 20) to a 16-seed. Both equal, IMO.

When’s the last time the media brought up Kentucky’s NIT season?

I feel like Izzo abd Cal are better coaches than Self
