Duke
2019 UVA is basically 2010 Duke.
Jon Scheyer - Ty Jerome
Nolan Smith - Kyle Guy
Kyle Singler - DeAndre Hunter
Lance Thomas - Mamadi Diakite

2019 Duke is basically 2010 UK.
RJ and Zion - Boogie and Wall
Both lost in the Elite 8.
Both teams were uber athletic but couldn't shoot FTs worth a lick and their incredible talent was young.

2010 Butler was a less athletic and a poor man's version of Texas Tech.
Gordon Hayward - Jarrett Culver

Did history just repeat itself?

Another similarity was that MSU was in the Final Four in both of those years. Narrowly lost to Butler (on a missed foul that should've sent Draymond to the line) but lost worse to TTU this year.

I said something similar back in late January. Although I was only commenting on the UVA-Duke similarities.

Okay, this might be far-fetched. But this team reminds me a lot of the 2010 Duke team. UVA has a dynamic trio in Kyle Guy, Ty Jerome, and De'Andre Hunter - much like Duke had with Jon Scheyer, Nolan Smith, and Kyle Singler (two guards and a wing). Both teams include a solid 4 man rotation among the bigs. UVA has Braxton Key (Lance Thomas), Jack Salt (Zoubek), with Mamadi Diakite and Jay Huff coming off the bench (Miles and Mason Plumlee)... No correlation between Kihei Clark and Andre Dawkins, obviously, but that's about it.

Both teams have a top 5 offense and defense. I know the season is still early, but UVA is on pace to be the highest rated KenPom team of all-time. They have been straight slaughtering teams lately - 20+ point victories. Had they not gone 3 for 17 from three against Duke, they easily could have won that game, too (albeit the game would be much, much different with Tre Jones in there). Anyway, I know UVA is #3 in the polls, but they absolutely deserve to be #1. Just my two cents.

I picked UVA to win the NCAAs in all 3 of my brackets.

A much better Kentucky team also lost to inferior opponents in the Elite 8 both years

-4.5 betting line = "much better?" That line implies that UK wins about 66% of the time, and UK is a public team (meaning the irrational public bets on UK and moves the line). On a related note, sports books are in the black.

Good observation, OP. Some other similarities:
  • Louisville lost in the first round.
  • Kansas lost in the second round.
  • A Bruce Pearl team outperformed its seed.
  • Gonzaga beat Florida State.
  • Murray State won one game.
  • Villanova lost in the second round.
  • Aside from the national champion (a big aside), the now-current members of the ACC under performed.

Having just beat them 80-53 doesnt qualify as "much better" in your book?Laughing And they were sans one of their best players? Vegas line means dick. That is set where they can get the most even action on both sides, not on what they think the actual final differential will be. Its amazing how many people dont understand that, and thats exactly why they're in the black.

  1. Clearly Auburn was playing just as well when they got beat at Rupp, right? That's why UNC smoked Auburn, right?
  2. "Vegas lines mean dick" is absurdly ignorant. The line starts with the expected outcome and is slightly modified to get to attract equal action (and books will stake positions that they know will not draw equal action when they feel it's warranted and to avoid other exposure). Let's see how this plays out.
  3. As I mentioned, UK is a public team and draws more dumb public money than Auburn, which means the line gets pushed (about a point or so usually) in UK's favor. This cuts against your argument, not for it. Moving the line too much exposes the books to both sharps and getting middled.
  4. The public was well aware of the availability of Auburn's players, which means it was factored into the line already.
  5. Same for the prior AU-UK game.
  6. And yet the line was -4.5 despite the betting public (let alone sharps) having all this information. Because that was the right line.
  7. I'm not amazed by your ignorance of bookmaking at all.

Awesome. I care. Laughing We're significantly better than Auburn, you'll just have to get over it. Nothing you said contradicts anything I said, professor. I know how gambling ****ing works dipshit.

You clearly don't, hence the insults and vague assertions of being right rather than making an argument. But that's fine. I'll sleep fine at night despite your petulance, and I hope you do, too.

2-2 the last two years, I’ll take that ;)

But, I get what y’all are both saying.

Im sure you will take that lol considering. That makes 19 wins total ever over us? Surely we've got a better win % in football v Auburn.

Football....Auburn is 26-6-1. 78.7% winning
Basketball.....Kentucky is 94-20. 82.4% winning

So actually, not too far off. Obviously one UK win in football is going to adversely affect that % a lot more with the lower number of head to head contests than basketball. Perhaps we'll get another elementary meltdown from our resident know-it-all re-explaining what I've already stated, yet again. Fingers crossed!

I was rooting for Auburn v UVA. I really was. What a shit way too lose. I didnt watch the title game until it went to OT and my gf hollered at me to wake up and watch. Just hard to care once UKs out of it. I get why other SEC fans are down on basketball, but once you guys are in the big dance and doing work, do you see why UK fans go nuts over it? Its good stuff, no?

Like I said in another thread, I’d take an 0-12 season in football for a title in basketball anyday. That loss to UVA stung a lot worse to me than losing in the final seconds vs FSU in then BCS title game a few years ago. I haven’t given a damn about football and spring practice for the first time in my life and I haven’t missed an AU home football game since 1982. I miss basketball a ton right now, it sucks.

March madness > whatever the shit we have at the end of college football seasons these days

You are the bizarro world version of me then. Id take a shit basketball season any day for a football natty.

Basketball is good only to me because of UK. If we were Auburn or Georgia I probably wouldn't care much at all. Baseball and football.....those are my sports.

I think a lot of it is because us AU fans have always cared about basketball but have been stranded in the wilderness by an athletic department, BOT, etc that did not invest or care one second about basketball. Football and basketball are equal to me, but it is a lot easier to get "to know" a basketball player and and enjoy his journey over a 3-4 year period than it is a football player if ya know what I mean. Well shit, you might not since you guys have so many damn pros who leave early these days :)

Yep, thats the exact opposite of how UK did business for decades. Football is football EVERYWHERE, even at Kentucky. It brings in a crapload more money than basketball here.

So they just used the football profits to prop up basketball even more. Our football recruiting budget was the same as the amount we spent on Big Blue Madness alone. That's a ****ing joke.

What Auburn has done is just dumb considering yall can afford to invest in basketball and baseball too.

At Kentucky, the basketball program is self funding. There are a handful of schools who generate a big enough profit of basketball. Which means where 99% of our competition has to spend money on mens basketball, our football profits SHOULD HAVE had that much more $ available to reinvest in football upgrades, or to help with other olympic sports upgrades, etc.

Between that simple and obvious truth and the $ brought in from SECN, UK has entered a golden era of success across all of our sports.

Exactly, but that’s what happened to a lot of these “southern football schools” that always employed their good ole boy network within the athletic departments.

I’m glad to see the landscape in basketball in our conference with all of these solid coaches. It’s crazy, but the SEC easily has better and more established coaches in basketball than it does in football. I never ever thought we’d see that. It shouldn’t have taken that long!
