Auburn needs 1 more big guy still

Bruce had around 50 to 75 people when he arrived. Mark Pope had 20,000 plus at Rupp and they turned an additional 5,000 or so away so you get my point. Sure there was a few UK fans questioning the hire because it came outta nowhere but as you can see most fans loved it and it’s only gotten better from that day.
ok. Thats just because no one cared about basketball then at Auburn. Not that people were against the Pearl hire

I'm curious to see how Jaland Lowe will do in Kentucky's system, which necessitates a lot of ball movement. Lowe is super talented, but was often forced to go iso with not a lot of talent around him. 42% efg is really bad. But, with better spacing, I'd think he could get his efg closer to 50% and maybe around 35% from 3. If he can do that, I think he can absolutely be a top 10 player in the SEC.

Lowe is my biggest question/concern for next year. If the percentages take a big jump on a much better team/system, UK could be elite. If he's closer to last year, ehh.

Lowe is super talented, though. If he raises his shooting splits, he could be a borderline 1st round pick, IMO.

If per chance, those shooting woes continue, I wouldn't be overly concerned. Pope is too much of an analytics guy to allow a high volume of shots from a 42% effective field goal percentage shooter.

Again if Pearl would have had the portal in 2014 I guarantee our team would have been better than it was. Hell Pearl is largely responsibile for helping elevate the league. bama literally got serious over basketball because of what Pearl was doing. Pearl helped Tennessee get going.
That’s an Auburn issue. Pearl had a lot of energy back then and that’s his best trait, but the portal thing is an excuse you’re trying to use.

Here's the problem with your view. In 2014, nobody had a portal to go to and in 2014, the SEC stunk. Pearl had a veteran roster and stunk it up.

In 2024, Pope had the portal to go to yes, but so did everyone else, which still puts Pope starting out in a very deep hole. Not only that, but Pope, in his first year, had to compete in the toughest conference of all time. He came in 6th, again, while dealing with an insane amount of injuries.

I get it, you don't like the comparison, because it makes BP look bad (he already did), but it’s not close to as unfair as the comparison you started with. You compared MP, in his first year at UK, with no roster, to BP, in his 10th season at AU, with the best roster he has ever had.

I really like the roster Arkansas put together, but admittedly, I don't know if their outside shooting is going to be any good. They have really good pieces though. I think they're right there with UK, I'd at least put them above Auburn, but it'll come down to that unbalanced SEC schedule most likely.

Kentucky was one of the top NIL spenders last year.
They had to get an entire roster out of the portal, so that's not surprising.
But also, look at the rankings of the guys he got, IIRC, I don't think any of them even in the top 20, possibly not even the top 30. I think Butler was 34th.
Did anyone else have to get more than 4 or 5 players out of the portal? Pope got 11 guys out of it.

Not sure if any were ranked in the top 20, but if you're in the 25-100 range out of thousands, that's pretty good. Portal rankings haven't been very accurate anyway.

I agree.
I think Pope got his money's worth out of Robinson, Butler, Amari Williams, Oweh and Carr. But I don't believe he paid top dollar for any of those guys.
We'll never know just how much each guy got.
Seems like the budget is tremendously higher this year than last.

you are wrong. Where could Pearl have gone to upgrade a bad roster in 2014 foe that next season? 10 high schoolere? No one couldbhave coached up the crap barbee left. Andbyes everyone does have the portal but not everyone can spend in the portal like UK can and did this last year. Again pope had a much netter situation to come into. I get it thougg. you are delusional UK fan

This made @lurkeraspect84 cry. Nobody even told him someone stole his throne.

If Pearl is such a great coach, he should have done better in such a terrible conference.

You’re the one that said Pearl was great and you used this year to make a comparison to Pope, who did things very few coaches could do.

Pearl had a full roster with continuity in 2014/15, Pope had nothing, so both coaches had advantages and disadvantages, but the bottom line is, the SEC was complete ass in 14/15 and Pearl stunk it up. If he was so great, that shouldn’t have happened.

What positions did you guys improve on in this year’s portal? Not taking a jab, just curious what positions you’ll be improved at.

again. No one could have coached up the crap barbee left. They were low mid major players. It was by far the worst roster in the SEC. No pearl did not have a single advantage. Continuity doesnt mean shit if the players have no talent. Pearl would have loved to have what Pope walked into. The ability to recruit a whole new roster from the portal while having top 10 NIL money to do it. Pearl would have loved to have that 10 times out 10. As would Pope.

Overall- defense, rebounding and toughness.

Having a center with a better offensive game will be the improvement as far as a single position is concerned.

Expect another L, BLOCKHEAD.

Not sure I'd put any SEC team in the preseason top 5. But, we could easily see 4 in the top 15 / 6 in the top 25. The gap between 1 and 5 isn't that large. Though, as often is the case, I'm sure one team will emerge as nationally elite (i.e. in contention for a 1 seed).

I like Auburn. I think Pettiford is a SEC POY candidate - and Keyshawn Hall could easily be a top 10 player in the league. I also really like this D2 kid they picked up, Elyjah Freeman. Not sure what that transition will look like for him, but he really pops on video; he has NBA athleticism and shot 46% from 3.

Hey dumbass, Williams was your offense in a lot of games. Your new center is a 40% shooter from the field and the free throw line. Lol you’re so ****ing dumb!

Just hoping Pettiford stays out of the draft. Auburn still needs another big guy. Whats your thought on james scott from Louisville? Decent reserve big guy? He is visiting Auburn this weekend. We need another big man

James Scott is a decent role player, he has zero offensive skills except for catching lobs and dunking. He needs to get a little stronger physically, but he’s a really solid person and not a locker room cancer.

well that is exactly what Dylan Cardwell who is out eligibility was for Auburn last year. Good reserve guy. He just arrived in Auburn for a visit. Apparently nc state and ole miss want him as a starter though

I think Lowe will be a net equal with Butler.
Quaintance is a huge upgrade at the 4/5
Kam Williams is a better all around player than Brea
Dioubate is a big rebounding/defensive/toughness upgrade over Carr, not as skilled in the paint, but Pope grabbed Jelavic for that.
Denzel Aberdeen is every bit as good, or better than Robinson.
Then you have Moreno and Jasper Johnson, 5* guys. I expect Jasper to be a force at the 1 and 2 by conference play.
Oweh is going to make a jump, I think he'll be a 1st team SEC guy and then there is Garrison and Chandler, both guys should be so much better.
Retaining players is a new thing for UK fans, it's like we hit the lottery

I don't think outside shooting will be as good, but I believe tjis team will be better at every other aspect of the game, but I certainly won't make any guarantees.

Williams was good at handling and passing the ball from up top, but he had nothing going on in the paint. He had no post moves and refused to protect the rim most times. He would literally back away and let small guards lay the ball in.

He also couldn’t shoot outside 3'. I love what he did last season, but he had a lot of faults.

You guys will be fine. NC State just picked up a commitment from Paul Mbiya and that will take them out of the running for James Scott and Ven-Allen Lubin. I'm guessing you'll get one of those two guys. Honestly, you'd be hard pressed to find a better quality big still available in the portal at this point.

Expect a commitment from Desmond Claude to Florida soon. That would put them firmly in the mix as an SEC title contender.
