Here’s the top 25 according to the RPI.

1. Tennessee Volunteers
2. Georgia Southern Eagles
3. Kansas Jayhawks
4. Belmont Bruins
5. Liberty Flames
6. Texas Longhorns
7. LSU Tigers
8. Nevada Wolfpack
9. Citadel Bulldogs
10. Duke Blue Devils
11. Loyola Maramount Lions
12. Furman Paladins
13. Florida State Seminoles
14. Virginia Tech Hokies
15. Ohio State Buckeyes
16. Auburn Tigers
17. St. John’s Red Storm
18. Vanderbilt Commodores
19. Rutgers Scarlet Knights
20. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
21. Fresno State Bulldogs
22. Gonzaga Bulldogs
23. Wisconsin Badgers
24. Buffalo Bills
25. Louisiana Rajin’ Cajun’s

And there you have it. Rutgers is the 2nd best team in the big ten and now that Tennessee lost Georgia Southern is the team to beat.

I thought it was common knowledge, that by rhe end of the season the RPI works much better.

It’s common knowledge that the RPI is an extremely crude and easily manipulated rating. Thankfully it’s no longer used by the selection committee (though some components of it still are—like the 1.4/1/.6 weighting for wins.)
