Should Calipari Retire?

Goodman's lisp makes me wish I were deaf. Who's the fat ass in the middle?

Very similar feeling to when Tubby was on the outs. If he doesn't get it together this year, he won't have to worry about retiring. UK will fire his ass.

I don't know. Sure seems like jumping the gun @ 7-2 this early in the season. I know UK doesnt have any quality wins yet, but theyve won every game they were supposed to sans one. Ive seen a few games and there is more than enough talent on that team to be top ten. I'd wait until the halfway point of SEC play to stir up any serious noise. As for firing Cal???? You should never fire any current top tier coach until you 100% have an upgrade locked and loaded to replace him with.

You have to really want a dude gone to absorb that buyout. And a lot of prospective coaches may not want to follow a guy who got the boot after a bunch of final fours and a championship followed by one truly shitty year (which many blamed on the lack of a proper offseason).

Many of you thought you were a title contender as recently as the year before last. And you have a great class coming in. I don't think Calipari is a great Xs and Os guy and never have, but it would probably be a better idea to try to bolster the staff around him until he retires.

A lot of it is overreaction relating to this specific season. Yes, their roster is older, but inexperienced when it comes to playing with the current roster of players. And no, they should never have lost to Notre Dame - but they haven’t exactly stumbled out of the gates, despite what they say.

Give me one name that is a realistic hire who is a very good bet to produce better than Cal right now.

Drew and Oats would. Drew would be a home run. I hope they're not smart enough to strongly pursue him.

Drew is a good name, and these last 2.5 seasons has easily been as good as anybody - so I do agree with you, generally speaking.

That said, the two seasons before these last couple Drew was 39-29. I understand it’s easier (substantially) to be consistently great at Kentucky as opposed to Baylor, I just don’t see too many guarantees out there. But Drew is about as close as it comes, good name.

I’ll take John Beilein to jump start the program and build it back before handing the keys off to Juan Dixon.
Please tell me his name isn't seriously being tossed around. I understand he was a legendary player for the program that is loved by the fans, but holy shit, dude is 34-98 in 4+ years at Coppin State. 😆

Oh his name will definitely come up in the coaching search I’m sure. He’s not ready, but I don’t hold his record completely against him. It’s nearly impossible to win at Coppin

That would be a big mistake.

Exactly. Some of the idiot UK fans fail to realize this before screaming "FAAAAAAAAAAAR CAL" from the rooftops. Damn redneck morons. That's how you end up with Billy Gillispie.
Yet The Drunk never had a season like Cals last year. Some UK fans would tolerate Cal losing 10 plus games every year as long as we had number one recruiting classes. So you tell me which one sounds more stupid.

The answer is somewhere in the middle, like most things. Cal needs to be responsible for the worst season in history but I also think he’s earned the right to fix the last few seasons. Especially with what he has coming in. My personal feelings are, give him this year and next year. If he haven’t sniffed a final four by then, probably best for both to move on.

What we think about our current and future teams is changing pretty quickly. Cal has been riding that original five year stretch for a few seasons now. Like I told KB, he’s earned the right to fix his last few mistakes. But it has to be acknowledged that things aren’t great right now, especially after last year, and that needs to change.

Oh he definitely needs to get his shit together. I am just saying UK has a good portion of fans that have the "grass is greener" mentality, when that's not always the case. It's not like UK is in the position to just pick whoever they want as his successor either. They've been denied by plenty of people over the past several coaching searches.

I would be THRILLED with Oats. Would take him in a heartbeat if we parted from Cal. Not only a good win loss ratio, but dude just plays a fun style of ball.

I’m up in the air on Drew.

There isn't one. Plenty of UK fans will say otherwise though, because their perception of "realistic" isn't realistic. IE someone like Jay Wright or Mark Few.... not happenin'.

Every blue blood should be nervous AF anytime there is a possible coaching change. I'd like to think we are immune to having a truly bad hire, but every program is one or two bad years away from begging people to attend games to fill up the arena.

Other than Billy D who said no after tubby and Gillispie?

Yeah, Drew has been at Baylor for 19 years now and aside from last season hasn't done much other than a pair of Elite 8s and only finished in the top 3 of the league 5 times.

2 questions

Doesn't he have a lifetime contract or some crazy shit like that?
Doesn't he have a ridiculously strong recruiting class lined up next year that includes the #1 guy?

Calipari has a $60 million buyout. The #1 guy (Shaedon Sharpe) reclassed to 2021 and will be at UK next week. Whether or not he plays at all this year remains to be seen.

Thoughts on that buyout? That's a lot of scrilla.

UK ain't a job just anybody can handle. You gotta take that into account. IMO you need a guy that has the personality that can handle all of it. The question is, who ya gonna get? Oats looks legit but you are still dice rolling on a guy that's 4-4 in the NCAAs that's never coached an E8 game with a small sample as a HC. He comes off as a nice guy not sure that's what you want in Lexington.

Pearl is the perfect hire IMO he has the entire package required to get it done @ UK. Drew would probably be a great fit too.

I can't see Calipari resigning though, unless he's got a health issue.

He won't get bought out as long as Barnhart is there. Some fans just like to bitch.

It feels like 20 yrs ago but the COVID year I thought UK had a strong team. Weren't they a high seed if the NCAAT happened?

It's kind of interesting seeing Duke and UNC make the risky hires. Could be those are the guys that they want. Also could be an indictment on the HC profession overall. It's like you're cruising the dance floor around 2am and you've hit the bad mood portion of your bender. There's something out there but not much, and what is out there ya just can't get.

I told UK fans pearl would kill it there. But they don’t want to listen to that. Pearl wants to see his son replace him though so I think he will retire at auburn and Steven will one day take over

No, he should not be kicked out. Last year was just weird. He is an ace recruiter. He has proved he is capable. He should be give two years to straighten things out.

Also, things aren't as easy for UK as they use to be. Tennessee, Auburn, bama and other SEC teams are recruiting at high levels now.
