Really impressed with the team. Talent has never been an issue - Shaka has had guys like MO Bamba, Myles Turner, Kerwin Roach, Isiah Taylor, etc. but cohesion, chemistry and confidence has been an issue over the years and even the end of Rick Barnes era.

This team has all the 4/5 stars but looks confident and is a team, plays with swag and speed, and can beat you anywhere on the floor. I don’t want to get ahead of myself as Texas always seems to do well in the OOC, then flops in the league (see 2015-16 and last year). I think you’ve now won 3-4 in a row over UNC. So, let’s see how Texas fairs in the league. BUT, I will say I’m impressed and it’s been a while since I’ve said and meant that.

Greg Brown is a beast and joins a veteran group. Jones, Coleman, Ramey, Sims all playing their best ball yet.

He needs to send Huggins a christmas card for that 35 point beatdown last season. Texas has been improving ever since then.

Hey speaking of, agree that WVU has its third best team in huggy era next to 2011 Final Four team and the Carter 2017 and 2018 S16 teams (went to S16 both years)?

Really impressed with the future NBA bigs and the McBride up top scoring.

Yeah, we have the potential. I think we will be better than any of those Carter teams and although we could get to the final 4, that 2011 team will be hard to top. Huggy has compared this team to that one though.

They look really good. The top half of the Big 12 looks like a murders row this year. Going to be brutal.

I fear that this could be the year that the league exacts brutal revenge on KU. A loaded league + a less-talented-than-usual roster could be a recipe for disaster.

I have no way to judge things yet. We have a talented but young roster that needed more ooc games to gel. I just assume Kansas will be better than us right now, but we shall see. I just wish there would be more fans in the stands. One of our strengths lately has been packing the house with 15k rowdy fans. Without that energy, not sure what to expect.

What’s the crowd capacity?

I haven’t seen Tech play yet. I’ve heard they’re struggling to score but play really good defense. And McClung apparently has been up and down?

25% , so around 4k fans. And McClung has struggled to find his shot the last few games but he has been suprising good at facilitating and playing defense. I had worried he might be a ball hog and play selfishly, but he has stepped up pretty well as a good teammate.

Like I have said before.

All coaches know how they want their team to play
The hardest part for any coach is to get their team to play that way

Texas isn't even there yet.
They are a 4/5 seed right now.

For them to be where Shaka wants they have to improve dramatically.

I actually think that the 2017-2018 team with Bamba had a chance to be a monster if Andrew Jones stayed healthy.

What this team is missing is a Mo Bamba or Jaxson Hayes

Teams can get money in the paint against Jericho Sims.
If there is a weakness at all it is in the paint on the defensive end

Shaka doesn't like to double. Very rarely will we double anyone on the court
Was much easier when there was a legit post defender.

While it may be true that not many coaches could have assembled the talent shaka has on this roster, most would have much better success.

This is an historically deep, talented, and experienced roster. Teams with this many returning, experienced, top 100 players are very rare, and when it does occur a competent coach takes that team to the final four, if not win it all.

Matters the seeding and brackets

The thing about this year's team. Too many weapons to score.

Today. Courtney Ramey didn't even score a single point. Didn't have a great game all at.
But Andrew Jones finally showed up and scored 20+ points.

Going into the season we maybe had 3 players who could score 20 points

Maybe now there is 4 with a possible fifth in Kai Jones.

Greg Brown is finally looking like an one and done.
Had his best game by far so far. Playing against Cade Cunningham helped.
But you have seen the improvement with him everytime he steps onto the floor.

The issue with Shaka like I have said is next year

Who returns
Are any of the freshman ready to play

As of right now looks like he might have 5 scholarships possibly 6 to work with
He already signed 4.

Even if they make the Final 4 if they are back to being a bubble team it is going to upset a lot of people.

Next year will ultimately prove what happens with Shaka.

Actually I agree wjth OP. It was the best in shaka era. Maybe the Bamba team was right there.
Def not best in last 10 years tho

the Tristan Thompson teams were superior and went farther In Early. 2010’s

Now that Shaka Smart is gone from Big 12, Bill Self can breathe a sigh of relief that he wont have to face his kryptonite again anytime soon. :)
