Really IU, that's the best you can do???

I'm hearing he was a top target, along with the obvious....That with Stevens, Beard out---IU was wanting a guy with IU connects....I dunno. If that is true, why not hire Dane Fife? He's 38. Asst under Izzo for 10 years. Experience with recruiting, and the college game.

Hope I am wrong. But I think this is gonna be shit.

I would have been more pissed if it was Fife.

Maybe, he is a stop gap measure and not a long term solution?

That’s a good way for Indiana to further cement the bad taste coaches have towards their program at the moment. I get the sentiment, but who wants to go to a place that has a revolving door at the HC position?

Isn't the guy 63? Maybe he is aware it is a temp position? I have no knowledge of the true situation at Indiana.

Meh.....Maybe if the hire was 40.....And not 63.

So he potentially has 12 useful years left
I guess that one way to look at it.....I'll support Woodson. Just don't support the hire. Hope like shit I am wrong...And TBH, I'm more interested now in who his assistants are. I do know one is Matta. Which IMO is a very good move by Indiana.

My thoughts----I think IU will get Mike Davis type of results. Which after what we have seen under Miller, would be like winning the fukin lottery.

COuldn't get it done on the mens side---Might as well do so on the womens side of things. I think IU has a legit shot to get to the FF....Playing 3 seed Arizona.

Matta hiring makes it interesting. It's sort of the reverse Michigan where your figurehead is the X's and O's guy and the assistant is the strong recruiter.

It takes some of the sting off the hire...Woodson is highly thought of. Good basketball mind. But, I mean if that good, I mean why an assitant for a lifetime, so to speak?

Who knows...I was all in on the Miller hire. So really, WTF do I know huh?

I have no idea how. I have a lot of respect for you Borden but the Fife or Lewis should be HC camp lose it on me. To me NBA assistant>college assistant.
I get that side of the argument. And its fair. If Dolson was targeting IU guys, not sure why you go with a 63 year-old coach, who's never coched at the college level---to rebuild your program.

Some thoughts..
- I hope it works out.
- His NBA connections could absolutely lure in some top recruits..
- I don't love the hire, but if they really wanted Miller out, they got Miller out. I'm a blank slate with this guy.
- Purdue / Indiana is so much better when they're both competitive.

... So, whatever gets us to that.

Wasn't he a head coach for multiple teams and multiple years? I honestly don't follow NBA, so I'm just going off of what I think I've heard here.

About your take on Miller.....dear God I'm right there with you! Although, I think he will do good at his next stop. He just made some catastrophic mistakes along the way. Plus, he was too stubborn to understand the areas he struggled with

Anyone who thinks that either Fife, or Lewis are better hires then a very respected NBA coach is clearly just speaking emotionally!
Never said the hire of Fife would have been better---Just more understandable...Especially if being an IU guy was a priority...And who knows, maybe Woodson ties to IU was irrelevant.

Also, NBA hires of guys with no college experience, doesn't exactly have glowing reviews.. Look at Mullins at St.John...Avery at Alabma....Isiah Thomas at FIU....Hoiberg.....On and on and on....

We will see. Maybe IU found their Howard. Dunno.

Woodson ws HC of the Hawks for 6 years.....Knicks as well, I think.

Millers biggest mistake was not bringing Wright along with him. That dude at PG for IU IMO changes things drastically.

Hire just reaks of desperation....Like Asking Banks 1, 2, 3 and 4 for a loan , and getting denied...So you to a check and cash for your help...

I get you....I honestly don't know what to think yet about the hire. But, what's the track record of assistant coaches who got their 1st head coaching job at a blue blood school? (I know Fife was a hc, but he was so young, and at such a small school)

Point being, wtf knows either way about how it will turn out? Hell, i fully expected to be laughing by now at Michigan for the Howard hiring . But, if we're strictly looking at both individual resumes, and past track records of other schools in a similar situation....I'll still take the NBA coach every time!

I honestly don't see it even close to being desperation. If it was desperation, it would have led to numerous names being leaked of coaches who turned them down. Basically what had happened at UCLA last year. Instead, you have very very few instances where they got turned down by a coach.

Instead, this hire seems like a very detailed and narrow coaching search. First option was of course BS (BTW that was a lot closer then most realize!) . After he turned down the job, it seams that IU wanted an IU guy. So, that's who they focused on the second after BS turned them down.

Could be....But you really think IU didn't reach out to Beard as well? And it seems they did so with Matta. I mean if Matta had felt he could do the job, this is a moot point---He's the coach.

I feel we got option 4 or 5 here. Could be wrong.

Don't be talking shit about Lovie...
He is actuallyfrom a town not to far where I grew up.
Overstreet was more known than him growing up though

That was Illinois fault not Lovie. Bad football program.

We will see what happens.
Avery Johnson did do a lot for Alabama. Maybe Indiana hàs a plan

This says more about me than him, but I honestly never heard of the guy before.

I hope it works out, IU being good helps college basketball as a whole.

Lovie had all the support he needed to get the program going. When given the opportunity to hire a DC for his failing defense, he hired.. himself. When given the opportunity to hire a LB coach, he hired.. his no-experience son. That doesn't even scratch the surface. He completely abandoned aspects of his job, and he completely abandoned recruiting Illinois.

You're not going to find an Illini fan that doesn't think highly of his character. We wanted the man to succeed. He just wasn't a college football coach, and he wasn't motivated to adapt to college football. Lovie has no one to blame for his failure but himself.

I thought we were talking about IU, not Duke, UK, Kansas or UNC.

Matta isn’t an assistant. He’s an Associate AD.
