Purdue vs Indiana

You and I both know that there's a difference between variance and outliers. None of IU's shooting splits yesterday were outliers.
Come on man. That was just the 2nd time this year IU shot below 20% from three. That is the definition of an outlier.

The thing I have come away with is Purdue wont be able to play against athletic guards at all. Michigan and IU guards are average at best and they had trouble keeping them out of the paint. Purdue draws an athletic team that can dribble penetrate and hit the glass they are toast. Three that come to mind if I'm a Boilermaker fan that I would want no part of that they could see Elite 8 or sooner would be UK,KU and Cincinnati

Purdue won because IU shot 18% from 3 and around 50% from the ft line.
IU hit a lot of contested shots which is rare for them, Purdue missed a lot of open looks, also rare.
Sure IU player tough defense, but let’s not pretend it was near the level Purdue just faced with Michigan. If IU did anything well, I would point to the attack on Purdue’s defense. They did that well, but once again, hit a lot of contested shots. Had Purdue shot anywhere near their average from deep, at a lot of shots were open ones, then it’s a blow out. IU shooting free throws didn’t seem any different than the last few games, so I have no clue what that is all about.

That is not exactly accurate... Purdue struggles with mobile 5's who can run the PNR. Long athletic guards have been decent at forcing us off the three point line, but it isnt long athletic guards in and of themselves that is worrying.

With all due respect. You took Purdue to the wire because Purdue missed a bunch of open looks.
Ok. Indiana defended Purdue very well. Purdue missed some open looks. But so did we. And since we're playing this game, IF IU wasnt w/o Davis, then maybe Haas doesn' go for 26.
IU defended very well. A lot of Purdues looks were contested .
Dude why can' you be a gracious winner like the rest of your buddies have been.

I don’t see where I wasn’t gracious. I said IU played well each time. IU was physical with Purdue Ana it worked for most of the game. I just said we shit bad and some of that was the defense, but a lot of open looks were missed, which of course is rare for the best 3 point shooting team in the nation. IU missing open looks isn’t out of the norm. What was put if the norm once again was IU hitting a lot of contested shots. Purdue gave up some open looks too though. Your original post made it seem like IU hung with Purdue the entire game because of something they were doing. Reality is that things Purdue usually does well, they sucked at. I doubt you see another game this year where Carsen, PJ and Mathias miss that many shots.

I was a good game and close. Pretty much standard IU Purdue game. But y’all did just lose to the formally winless team in the league, so it’s not like a trend and more like an outlier.

Well unfortunately we don' have Ole Miss, MSU, UGA, etc to lean on....SmokinSmile
Exactly, you've got it easier with Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Rutgers, etc. Guess that's why as of today the SEC projects to have at least 3 more teams in the dance than the Big 10. Winking

The point is despite whatever led to a close game, it was a close game that IU could have won. Purdue didn’t play it’s best, but the energy IU played with as well as their pick and roll game certainly contributed to that. I know Archie has no interest in any moral victories, but at this point, it’s year 1 in the rebuild, and IU probably played it’s best defensive game since VO was actually in a Crimson uniform. Your posts are unnecessary. Be gracious in victory.

That's b/c IU played with Purdue because of what they were doing. Miller's game plan was very good. Attack Purdue's bigs with a pick-n-roll. So no IU didn't hang arounf by hitting a lot of contested shots. They hung around by attacking the rim, via the pick-n-roll. Hence is why 40 of Indiana's 67 points came in the paint. IU got a ton of lay-ups early. MOF, I can only recall, off hand, two or three jump shots that IU hit that were contested; All by Johnson and all late in the shot clock. I thought IU done a great job of not settling for jump shots. They attacked the rim.

Defensively Indiana was really good and active. Early they took away the 3-point shot. Only when they doubled Haas, did you guys get open looks. And those came early. Most of Purdue's shots from three were contsted. Indiana IMO played Purdue as well defensively as any team this year. It kept us in the game.

Yes Purdue missed some open looks. Shots I was surprised didn't go. But for the majority of the game, IU took that away(3-point) shot. EVen then , it wasn't enough. Shows you just how balanced Purdue is. Very, very good team with a legit shot to get to the FF.

IU played well, I think that’s what you want to hear. The rest, I suppose we can disagree with. I know we were 0-7 in the first half from 3 and all but one of those was a pretty wide open shot. IU did hit a lot of contested shots including the drives to the basket. PnR is obviously a good strategy to use against Haas and Haarms. Thankfully Purdue has been able to survive most games against it.
My point was simply that this was the worst game Purdue has played this year outside of the Bahamas. Some of it was due to IU playing physical and some of it was simplify missing shots they normally make. Cline, Mathias, Carsen and PJ all scored well below their averages and you won’t see that happen very often. I will say I think IU was very successful at getting Carsen out of his game and making sure Cline didn’t get many open looks. PJ, Mathias and Vincent all missed several open looks however and I guess we can give IU credit for the physical play getting inside of their heads.
I did find it ironic as IU fans used to complain, and at times still do, about Purdue being physical with their guards. For me, I think it’s oart of the game and if the refs allow it, you either adjust or lose. Purdue adjusted, albeit late, but Michigan did the same thing and we survived twice. Tennessee was the first team to do this to Purdue and I would imagine most teams will attempt the same as well as PnR.

On the Purdue board, some posters are talking like Michigan and IU were the first teams to attempt high PnR against Purdue all season, but the truth is that Purdue has faced a steady dose of it for years. Michigan and IU had some success with it, but it’s always been an area where Purdue has has some vulnerability and that hasn’t been a secret. Perhaps the biggest reason why Michigan and IU were effective with it is that they have Wagner and Morgan at center, who create match-up problems for Purdue (and vice versa). Purdue will be fine on defense.

Oh Elston. He’s on Archie’s staff now I believe.

@Toast was it you that had a funny story about Elston back when they were playing at Purdue?

He was on Crean's staff the last two years and Archie kept him on.

Bump for Borden.

Now look at the last theee games and tell me which one is the outlier? Probably can be considered y’all’s Super Bowl. Amirite?

Yep. Was just getting back into WL on a Friday night for the Purdue-IU game the next day -- probably like 2013. Driving up State St and these two huge dudes walk out of Chipotle, but one just jogs right into the middle of the street while the other yells at him to stop. I was going about 35 and slam on my breaks so hard you smell the rubber burn. Luckily come to a stop about 3-5 feet in front of Derek f*cking Elston, who's just staring at me while standing in the middle of the street...while Cody Zeller is yelling at him for being a dumbass.

Hahaha that’s right. Forgot about that story.
