Purdue President Mitch Daniels nails NCAA

Holy shit, that is scathing!

When it was discovered that, at what we've always considered an academically admirable school, championships had been won by teams loaded with players who took completely phony classes, most of us were sincerely shocked. We were stunned again when, after years of cogitation, the NCAA delivered a penalty of . . . nothing. It was a final confession of futility, confirming the necessity of this special commission, if any meaningful change is going to happen from the collegiate end.

That part was awesome.

"Another idea would be to allow players to depart early for the NBA, but the scholarships they received would be required to remain vacant for the balance of their four-year terms. Coaches who want to chase that next championship with full-time players masquerading as students could do so, but the following few seasons might be tough with rosters filled with walk-ons."

I proposed something very similar to this some time ago. In my version I proposed the scholly's be held up for 3 years though, for those that graduate early or leave for the league after the 3rd year. I think that this is the best answer to solve the 1 and done problem.

I actually hate this idea. The NCAAs hands are tied since the NBA wont allow players to go straight to the pros.

I dont think OAD is even remotely a problem. People drop out of college to pursue other opportunities (or just even realizing college isnt for them) all the time.

Is everyone at Purdue hung up on the National Champions? I see where their fans get it I guess. It is kind of amazing that people who deem themselves educated still don't even try to understand the facts before mouthing off.

You’re right. Mitch Daniels has no idea what he’s talking about. Oh wait...

The "facts" are exactly as stated by Mitch Daniels - former governor of Indiana and current President of Purdue University. The NCAA is a cesspool. UNC is embarrassing itself. Kentucky, Duke and a couple of others are basically de facto NBA D league franchises. May hurt but doesn't change the "facts".

Why are you guys so insecure? You have an outstanding team this year. I know a girl who is a Purdue grad and she isn't like you guys at all (thank goodness). These 'facts' you reference sound familiar. I remember all the 'facts' being mentioned for years. Then all of those 'facts' were not actually as they were reported by some. Being a former politician doesn't help your case here. I mean, they are the one group known the most for being dishonest and framing thing for their own selfish interests. So I would say the former governor is saying things not at all surprising, considering that is who he is.

Doesn’t hurt me as a Duke fan in the slightest. We recruit the best players. They attend classes for the academic year they are on campus. Leave in academic good standing and chase their dream of playing in the NBA. Why would that bother me in the slightest? It doesn’t hurt. At all.

You should focus on your BB team and hope they make it out of the first weekend.

Because it's a sham? Just a thought.

It used to be that politicians were easily #1 on the dishonesty scale. They have been outpaced by both UNC and the NCAA.

That rule is idiotic by Daniels. I fully believe if Purdue was one of the elite programs that could get the best talent they wouldn't be trying to sell this. Sorry you don't play for final fours and national titles....Kansas does the best of both worlds, we sprinkle in a one and done every once in a while with junior and senior laden teams, and I have absolutely no problem with what Kentucky and Duke are doing. I don't care what rule you implement the elite programs will always be the elite programs, playing fields will never be equal.

It's an idiotic idea. I'm curious about why you think it's good to punish oad's? Have they done something to you? That's really what this idea is about. Putting a scarlet letter on oad''s in the hopes that no one will recruit them. That's disturbing and I don't like the oad system.

Not going to make a follow-up comment to your gem about Mackey Arena?

A sham? I’m not following. You do understand one and dones have happened previous to 2011, correct?
Sure I am...I am also aware that it only more recently became a model pioneered by Calipari and more recently adopted by K. Ironic that a measurable group of Duke fans used to point at UK as a sham. It's a sham because what was once an occasional occurrence spread among several teams has become a focused strategy by a select few. Basically building a significant portion of their team with "students" who have little interest in pursuing an academic degree. A byproduct of this is CBB is headlined by a few teams, that while amazingly physically talented, suck at basketball. Occasionally they overcome that deficiency in basketball with athletic supremacy. Often they do not.

You do realize these kids that leave Duke early still continue to take classes after they leave campus, correct? Or are you more concerned with framing only a portion of the landscape to fit your agenda?

Purdue fans are an interesting bunch I guess. They seem kind of eaten up with other teams from the top down. I'm pretty surprised tbh.

Haha yeah that was my bad, for whatever reason my entire post didn't save and it wouldn't allow me to correct it. Love Mackey Arena, top 5 venue in college hoops. I was only intrigued by the level of booing at the games. Could easily just be the way the noise travels in the building. Was not supposed to be a slight but I can certainly see why it came across that way

And I'm not slamming Purdue fans or Daniels, from what Ive heard he is a very good president. But this rule comes across as very butt hurt and ill informed of the entire scale of things to me.

No problem. Appreciate the response.

Winning a CBB championship is probably a nice feeling - I wouldn't know. Then again being ashamed of my University is something I haven't experienced either. If I had to choose I'd choose the latter. I already know your choice.

He is right about corruption but the part about one and dones is basically a dude whining about Purdue not getting good recruits. The idea doesn't hold up either. Schools can't control if a player goes pro so it makes no sense to penalize a school for recruiting good players.

And if the one and done rule didn't exist, the powerhouses will still get the top recruits.

You have it backwards but that's ok. When you want something so bad I realize how difficult it is to deal with being wrong. It's tough sometimes(so I've heard).

Random, totally uninvolved fan knows better than not only other random, uninvolved fans, but also better than actual University presidents. Duh!

I literally cannot find an eye rolling gif that gets across how lame the UNC fans here are with this whole nonsense. Just accept that nobody else outside of UNC fans thinks you guys are innocent. You don't have to fight it every single time.

The irony of that post, btw, is awesome:)

Eyeroll How’s that?

One and dones make college basketball more competitive. It rustles my jimmies to no end that people still cant seem to grasp this.

If Duke and UK had seniors every year, it would be incredibly hard to beat them.

But they dont, they have high variance 5 star rates frosh who sometimes are KAT and then some other times are lolSkal. And then of course they end up as everything in between those 2 as well.

To counteract this, teams simply develop top 100 4 stars over multiple years until theyre upperclassmen.

Virginia, Purdue, and Villanova are perfect examples of this and theyre all definitively better than Duke and Kentucky this season

Thats an awful idea. I can't even imagine how someone would think thats a good idea. "Hey coach don't even bother developing people or making them better, they'll leave early and you're fvcked because you're too good at your job."
